U'kaiah grabbed a fresh mug of ale and tured around to scan the room
over the rim as he sucked a bit of the head from the top. There was the
usual crowds of men and women mixing and mingling. It was obvious some
tithing caravans and travelers were making their way through by the
groups of wide-eyed holders staring at the male green and blueriders
making out in the corner, the lady greenriders strutting past in tight
and revealing clothing, the riders missing limbs from brushes with
Thread. The Weyr was putting on quite a show for them tonight, the
Wingleader noticed.
As he scanned the crowds he noticed a table of ladies, sitting close to
the men but involved in their own hushed conversations. No doubt
discussing all the scandalous behavior they had accompanied their men to
see. It was more entertaining than a harper concert, he was sure. But
he was surprised to find a pair of eyes staring back at him. Lowering
his glass he cocked his head to the side, not releasing her gaze. Well,
she certainly didn't seem ashamed to have been caught staring. He liked
that. His lips curled into a cocky bronzerider smile as he gave her a
slight bow of acknowledgement. It was good to see not all the Holder
women would be hiding behind their men this evening. He decided he'd
better keep an eye on her while he walked back to his table to share the
rest of his mug with his mates. Every once in a while he would look her
way, just to make sure she was still there and watching, which she
usually was.
He wasn't at all surprised to hear soft footsteps behind him later that
evening as he made his way out of the dining hall. Turning around he
looked the young woman full in the face, much closer than before.
"You're even prettier close up."
"I.. noticed your attention," she replied, smiling coyly but blushing
shyly at the same time. She was nervous, yet determined to do this.
That would show her dolt husband that she was woman who men
appreciated!
"_My_ attention?" he asked, crossing his arms over his chest with an
amused grin. "I seem to remember you were the one looking at me."
"You are handsome to look at," she said, fingers playing with a curl
from her hair.
"Am I? I didn't realize." He couldn't decide if she was coy or
fidgiting. She didn't seem to be well practiced at seduction.
"You must have. Ladies has to be telling you it all the time," she
wished she had taken more wine, although she was getting over the
worse of the nervousness. After the first step, she felt it was
getting easier. Besides, he was dragonman, a bronzerider. Their
reputation was that the pretty much bedded anything walking past them.
And she knew she was pretty.
"I'm sure I don't have nearly as many admirers as a lovely lady such as
yourself." She was pretty. He had seen prettier. She was nothing to
Trae, and he kicked himself for even thinking of the goldrider. "How is
it
that you've found yourself without company this evening?"
"I had a company, a dull one, so I escaped them on pretense I'm going
to sleep," she said with conspiratory wink. "It just I don't want to
go to sleep alone." She looked him with big eyes.
"I see," he said thoughtfully, taking a step closer to her. U'kaiah was
no fool. He was pretty sure there was a reason she had singled him out.
"And you thought perhaps a bronzerider might make a good warmer for
your bed?"
"I've heard great things about you," she said. She wondered if she
should touch him. She wanted to.
"Oh really? What have you heard?" he asked curiously, reaching out to
trace a finger along her exposed collarbone.
"That you're were free of your ways and you know how to please a
woman," she said even if such talk made her blush. His attention was
intoxicating.
His smile was a bit more forced. Of course. It wasn't actually _him_
that she had heard of. It was just bronzeriders in general. That was
all he was to her. It was the kind of bedpartner Trae would have chided
him for persuing in the past. She had hated the way he had been a
woman's bronze trophy. Well, she was not here, and what good had being
more ever given him? Nothing but heartache. This was... easier. Less
messy. He'd get a nice tumble in the furs, and this girl would have a
great story to tell of her adventures in the Weyr. Just who could get
hurt? "Perhaps. But you
know, I'm not just a bronzerider."
"Oh?" she asked with rised eyebrowns. She just wished he was not
playing with her. She was getting quite worked up! She could have
never imagined that adultry was exciting.
"No," he said, the backs of his fingers tracing up her windpipe and
lifting her chin. Leaning in so close she could feel his breath play
across her lips he whispered, "I'm a Wingleader."
"Does it make you better?" her tone carried a challenge. Oh, when her
frieds back home heard she had a wingleader! They would be livid with
envy!
"No," he smiled, letting his teeth gently nip at her full bottom lip
teasingly. "I was always the best."
"That sounds just perfect," she said, after she had managed to catch
her breath back.
