"I don't need you to talk to girls for me. I can talk to a girl," he
snapped back, feeling rather foolish that she would think that he
couldn't take care of himself.

"I _know_ you can talk to a girl, you're talking to _me_." Karri
growled, standing up. She'd had about enough of L'rew's attitude for
the day. "That's not what I meant by it, it's uncomfortable to just
walk up to a person and ask them for sex. I was just trying to be nice
but if you've got it handled then fine. Sorry for caring!"

"Oh, you think I can't?" His pride was smarting and he was too angry
to think clearly. Did she really think him a coward? Well, he'd show
her! "All right then, how about it? You and me, right now?"

"You and me what?" He was all but yelling at her and she was furious,
why couldn't he just stay pleasant. All she was doing was trying to
help, she thought they'd become sort of friends over the last few
sevenday. "What, sex? This doesn't count as _asking_, we're fighting!"

"You just said I didn't have the guts to just walk up and ask. Well,
now whose afraid?" L'rew asked, feeling a satisfying sense of
vindication.

She was. She could feel it creeping in and taking over from the anger
that seemed to come so easily with L'rew. No one had ever asked her to
have sex with them before. She'd asked U'kaiah for experience when she
was a weyrling, and her only other sexual experiences had been during
flights. "Why are you doing this? Don't you want someone pretty?"

He crossed his arms across his chest. "What, you think you're too good
for me or something?"

She heard his challenge, and she wanted to rise to it, to show him that
she wasn't afraid, but her insecurities about her scar held her back.
"Are you being serious? This isn't some mean bet or something?"

"You accused me of being a coward and you say _I'm_ the one whose mean?"
L'rew wasn't so angry that he'd actually admit he wasn't serious
out loud. Truth was he didn't know what he'd do if she had said yes!

"I'm sorry." She said, suddenly realizing that this very scene is what
she'd tried to help him avoid. "I've just... never had anyone _ask_ me
before." She blushed and looked down, embarrassed at the admission, and
at her behavior. L'rew just seemed to bring bad behavior out of her.

He felt a little bad. It was obvious he had made her feel
uncomfortable. But thank Faranth, now at least he had an out where he
could save face! "Well, if you're so nervous, then maybe it's not a
good idea then."

She almost took the easy way out, it would have been so easy to to just
nod and be done with it. But she knew he needed the experience, and she
feared that he'd just go into that disgruntled shell of his again and he
wouldn't do it with anyone. "No, it's okay. It's not a bad idea
actually. We're friends aren't we? I mean, it won't be as awkward
since we get along, well, when we aren't fighting at least. Just don't
expect me to be very skilled or anything, I haven't had a lot of
practice."

L'rew could feel a knot of fear developing in his stomach. "Right now?
You know, you really don't have to, I understand..."

She tried to think about what U'kaiah had done for her, she could see he
was nervous and she knew it was her job to put him at ease. "Right now
seems as good a time as any." She took his hand and leaned up on her
toes, kissing him uncertainly.

The brownrider grew stiff as her lips touched his. It wasn't that it
didn't feel good. He could feel even that light touch send a burning
heat through his body. But the feeling was followed by a sense of
panic. Shards! She meant _now_!!! L'rew quickly took a step back, his
hand limp in hers. "I... promised Chairoth I'd bathe him today... Now
isn't a good time for me. Tomorrow, ok? We can do this tomorrow..."
And it would give him time to try to figure out just what in Faranth's
name he was supposed to do!

It wasn't the reaction she was expecting _at all_, and his rejection of
her hurt. She did her best throw up a mask of indifference but she knew
the water that sprang and filled her eyes was visible. She turned and
walked towards his door, doing her best to make her voice seem light and
airy like Mollex's always was. "That's fine, I've got sweepriding duty
most of the day, I'll come by after dinner sometime." She didn't dare
say anything else, her voice was closing off and she knew she was close
to a sob. She closed the door behind her and headed down the corridor,
finally letting the tears flow down her cheeks. She needed to talk to
someone, to find out just what in Faranth's name she was supposed to do!
