Being Blunt (1/2)

Writers: Cali, Eimi
Date Posted: 22nd February 2009

Characters: Karri, L'rew
Description: Karri confronts L'rew about his lack of experience.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 1, day 2 of Turn 5

Karri found L'rew's weyr fairly easily and knocked at the door. Elliath
had told her he was there, and alone, so she didn't feel bad about
visiting. He'd been more talkative of late, even taking a meal with her
and a couple other riders, but he was still mostly a loner and she
always felt like she had to be careful so as to not cause some unintended insult.

The brownrider was surprised to hear a knock on his door, especially at
this candlemark. He opened the door warily, but relaxed a bit when he
noticed a familiar, and surprisingly friendly face. "Hi Karri."

"Hi, mind if I come in?" she had to ask since he hadn't made any move
to unblock the door.

"Uh... No... I guess not..." He looked over his shoulder at the mess on
his table and sofa with a frown. "Yeah, come in, but I'm sorry, I
wasn't... you know, expecting anyone." L'rew moved over to his sofa
and picked up the pile of clothes he had intended to take down to the
laundry at some point. Looking around he finally threw that back behind
the sofa instead. "Have a seat."

Karri hid her smile as she sat down and did her best to keep her
attention on him instead of letting her eyes wander about the room.
"You bolted right after class today, I was just checking to make sure
you were okay."

"Oh yeah, I'm fine. I'm just... You know, a little nervous about my
Blooding." Scared out of his mind was a little more like it.

"Oh, okay." Karri nodded in understanding. "I just saw a green rise
about that time and thought that you might have been heading off to
that."

"No," he snorted, as if the idea were preposterous. "Chairoth is still
young to chase greens." His face turned a little more serious as he
thought about it. "Isn't he?"

"No." she echoed him, but made sure to keep the snort out of her voice.
"Three of your green clutchmates have already risen, and more will
follow soon. Chairoth could get interested at any time now."

"So soon?" Shards, he had thought he still had time...

Karri looked at him for a moment and wondered if he ever paid attention
in class or to the other weyrlings. "Have you had the chance to get any
experience yet? We've kept you all pretty busy of late."

L'rew's face turned white and then crimson as the red star in the space
of a moment as his jaw dropped open, not sure how to respond to that.
"You... You'd just come right out and ask that of a person?"

"When it comes to the mental safety of both the dragons and their
riders, I've learned to be pretty blunt." Karri replied evenly. T'mahl
had been right, like he always was, and now she new it was her job to
lead him down the right path.

He stood up and moved around the sofa so he wouldn't have to look at
her, picking up shirts and socks with extreme concentration. "Chairoth
and I are mentally just fine."

"Maybe, do you really want to risk Chairoth to find out though?" Karri
asked, hoping that his stubbornness didn't surpass his love for his
dragon. "If it's a matter of a willing partner, I could introduce you
to a few girls..."

"And just why do you assume that I _haven't_ already... taken care of...
that?" he asked, forcefully balling up his load of laundry and walking
it back towards his sleeping area.

"Well have you?" she dared him to lie to her.

The brownrider wasn't above lying to save face. "Long ago."

She didn't believe him, not even a little, but what could she do. It
wasn't a necessity that one had to have experience before a flight, but
it'd be better for him if he did. "Okay." her annoyance was obvious,
but she didn't like being lied to. "If you decide you want _more_
experience though, I know a few girls that would be happy to help.
There isn't anything wrong with asking someone you know. I did so I
could get experience."

"Like who?" he asked, trying to just exude curiosity rather than actual
interest.

Thank Faranth he wasn't going to be an idiot about all this after all. "Oh I don't know, Mollex, Sorithina, Jerinica, Emithey..." she ticked off names of promiscuous as well as friendly greenriders. "And there are also a few of your green clutchmates that still need some experience as well."

The list of women she had ticked off certainly left a bad taste in his
mouth. They were all loose women who couldn't keep their hands off
boys. Except him, of course. But maybe it was easier to just go to one
of them. He just had to get it over with, after all. "Well, I suppose
if I don't have to spend any time with them, any woman would do."

"True, and you'll have plenty of that over the turns when Chairoth does
catch greens." She admitted, tucking her legs under her on the couch.
He obviously didn't like her suggestions, so she'd try another approach.
"Wouldn't it be nicer for you though if you actually _liked_ the person
you were going to bed with? Surely there's _someone_ that interests
you. I could talk to them in your stead if you want?
