"Hey R'len!" Kamalia called, walking quickly to catch up to him. She had just finished eating and had a bit of time before the afternoon classes began.
R'len looked up from his inspection of his latest experiment. He had been working on bite size treats. Not too flaky so the contents will not fall out, yet not too thick or crisp. "Hey Kamalia, how are you?"
"Fine. I don't want to sit in class again though." She saw what he was eating and her eyes got wide. "Ooh, what's that? I didn't see it being served in the dining cavern."
He grinned, "no, not yet anyway. They are kind of like a mini bubblie. These have berries in them. But you should be able to put any kind of shredded meat in them too. They are good, here, try one" He held out the plate so she could take one of the tidbits.
"Really?!" Needing no further encouragement, Kamalia accepted the little pie and bit into it. "Ooh, this is great. Hot, and sweet." She took another bite, sighing happily. "So, how did you manage to get them?"
"I made them" he told her still grinning "they are kind of an experiment, an idea I had been toying with before I impressed Solanth." he added with a shrug, as he picked up another and bit into it.
Kamalia's eyes grew wide. "They're amazing, really. Were you in the bakercraft?"
"Why, thank you" he told her with a slight bow of his head then chuckled. " I was a senior apprentice before I Impressed, I suppose I will have to try and squeeze in the time when I am not doing rider obligations. I guess I will always love baking." he smiled and ate another.
"I still sneak in here when Solanth is sleeping and I have the time" he told her speaking softly as if he were whispering to hide a secret.." But Solanth will always come first" he added with the look of adoration that riders get when they think of their lifemates.
"Of course." Nothing could come between rider and dragon. "That sounds like a lot of fun though. And then you get to eat what you cook."
He grinned, "yeah it is fun, and the fact that you get to eat it makes it all the better. But I think after eating this I will have to work some of it off." He said with a lopsided grin, "that is the one draw back of this job. But sometimes it is well worth the effort."
He sighed looking at the plate. "have as many as you would like," he said pushing the plate toward her again. " I was going to bring some of them to class, see what the others thought." He looked back in her direction head cocked a little, "do you think the others will like them? They are not too sweet?"
Kamalia sat down at a nearby bench and happily took another little bubbly. "Now that you're a dragonrider, I'm sure you'll be able to work off anything you cook." She took a bite, trying to analyze what she was tasting. "Well, I really like anything sweet, so I'm not the best person to ask, but I think it's great. The berries give it a tiny bit of tartness." If she hadn't Impressed, maybe she could have taken some baking classes.
He smiled, "I am like you, I like anything sweet." He picked up another and examined it. "I had intended it to be kind of a desert, for those who don't want a whole bubblie. Or to be able to to take it for a picnic. Especially when they are stuffed with meat instead of berries."
Kamalia took one more, promising herself it would be her last. "I think that's a great idea. They're also more fun to eat than lots of other foods. You can just pop them into your mouth easily, without making a mess. Are they hard to make?" The berry filling seemed easy enough, but she wasn't so sure about the crust.
"Nah, not really" he said shrugging his right shoulder. "it's all about consistency, and portion. The crust took a little bit of practice, but the filling really isn't much different than a full size bubblie." He really should have eaten more of something other than the sweets, but they were good.
"Do you think you could teach me? I mean, I don't want to interfere with your craft, but I'm good at stirring...and tasting. I could be a helper, at least in the free quarter candlemarkers that we have." It would be a nice change from chopping meat for Alaudath or doing drills.
He chuckled a little. "uuhh yeah sure, as long as my Master doesn't mind. I suppose I could show you some things on rest days."
"I don't think it'll get much better, even when they're full grown." It was still strange to think that the rest of her life was already planned out for her. She no longer needed to decide what she wanted to do. Suddenly, in her mind, she felt Alaudath stir. "Time to get back to the barracks. Alaudath is waking up."
"Solanth is still sleeping, but I am sure he will be waking up soon too. I'll just take the rest of these with us to class" He picked up the plate as he slid the chair out.
Kamalia nodded. "Well, I hope to be able to cook with you soon. Or, if not, at least be able to taste your experiments, especially when you make desserts."
R'len chuckled, "I promise you will be the first, well the second after me, to try anything new."
