Rendalen stretched and slowly opened his eyes, he had to get to the kitchen
to start his soup stock. It would take the better part of the morning to get
it done properly. He quickly changed, then went quickly toward the kitchens.
He set about his duties and adding the ingredients for his soup stock, when
he heard a faint humming. He had heard it many times before, he knew what it
meant. He looked over at his Stepmother, Sertiela, who was one of the other
kitchen hands that morning, looked up at him as she too recognized the
sound.
Serteila thought he looked a little rattled. "Go!.... Go!" she shouted at
him waving in the direction of the door. She smiled as he stood there for
few seconds more and a big smile broke across his face.
He was all but running back to the candidates barracks to change into his
robes. As he ran out the door to head off to the hatching grounds, he almost
ran headfirst into Trealeina. "Good, you are ready, hurry.!" Trealeina ran
after him as he took off full speed for the hatching grounds. He slowed down
as he reached the hatching grounds entry. "Well it's time" he said to
Trealeina. Others were rushing onto the grounds around him as he stood there
with Trealeina. She
gave him a hug "good luck" she said softly and pushed him through the
doorway toward the sands.
Rendalen waded through the eggs toward the middle where he had felt the egg
that made his skin tingle. The humming had become much louder now, and the
excitement could be felt in the air. Rendalen could feel the tingling
sensation return as he moved around the eggs once more. There was a cracking
sound that could be heard all over the hatching grounds. He followed the
sound of the first cracking egg. First a bronze claw found it's way out of
its shell, then the head, then the body, and he watched in wonder as the
little bronze made his way to his lifemate.
Rendalen looked around hearing more and more cracking sounds from some of
the other eggs around him. Suddenly he was aware of the crying sounds
from a brown that seemed to be headed in his direction. He looked around
him, there were at least five others standing where he was. The small
brown could be headed for any one of them. The tingling sensation had all
but taken over his body and he dared to hope this one was his, The little
dragon seemed to stumble and trip over himself as he drew closer. Rendalen
barely realized he was holding his breath until the little dragon had all
but fallen at his feet. He reached down to help the little one up, then all
at once a thought that was not his own filled his mind.
}:I am Solanth. I am for you. You are for me.:{
Something that he could not explain filled his entire being, this little
creature was everything that he had ever wanted. "Solanth" He cried a loud
as he fell to his knees and wrapped his arms around the brown. Tears fell
from his cheeks and mingled with the wet substance still on the
hatchlings hide. The hunger pains that he felt soon made him release his
hold on the hatchling. "We must get you something to eat, you must be very
hungry."
}:yes I am:{
"come with me, my brave little brown"
Rendalen led his new mate off of the sands. He almost ran head first into
the rider standing at the entryway with the bowl of meat waiting for him. He
fed Solanth as slowly as he could as Solanth seemed to inhale every piece
offered.
"Had enough yet? your belly looks as though it will explode" Rendalen
laughed as he looked more closely at the now dried hide of his new mate. It
seemed to have taken on almost a chocolate brown color
}:yes, I feel better now. I am so very tired now:{
"come on then, I will show you where you can sleep"
Rendalen led him to the couch that the young dragon would be using for most
of the next year. Solanth made himself comfortable, his eyes closed whirling
a happy blue color. Rendalen reached over to scratch the eye ridge as he had
so many times for Tamineth. Only this time, it was for his dragon, one only
for him.
Rendalen sat on the floor next to the couch where his brown lay sleeping and
draped one arm around him, then lay his head just under
Solanth's. He took in a deep breath, he was tired too. But he didn't want to
miss the feast. Besides he wanted to tell Trealeina. He looked upon the
sleeping body once more, then ran his hand the length of the sleeping
dragons body, fighting the urge to curl up next to him and just revel in the
feeling of his presence, and turned to go to the dining caverns.
He found Trealeina sitting with his family. He hurried over to sit with her.
His Stepfather shook his hand firmly, patting his shoulder. "Good job lad,
We are all proud of you."
R'len smiled at everyone as his stepbrother shook his hand and his
stepsister hugged him so tightly he thought he would not be able to breath.
He turned to Trealeina, smiled and sat next to her.
"well?, what is his name?" she asked as he sat down next to her.
R'len beamed "his name is Solanth, and a beautiful brown, the most handsome
from the whole clutch."
"I guess I have to get used to calling you R'len now" Trealeina said with a
twinkle in her eye.
"I will have to get used to being called by that name" he said still filled
with the sensation of Impression.
"I am so happy for you. The best thing about it is, you will never again
feel alone."
