The Weyrlingmaster fell into step next to with the greenrider, relieved
he had finally found her. "Good day, Karri. How was your class? Not
too rowdy I hope."
Karri smiled as she looked up at him, "Hello, not too rowdy. There are
alot of weyrfolk this time around so they're keeping everything calmer."
"How about the senior weyrlings? How are their classes?"
"Classes are going good as a whole," Karri said. She wondered if she
should mention the trouble she was having with L'rew, but she didn't
want to whine either. "This class seems more difficult than the last though."
"Hmm, yes, they certainly have their problems." And speaking of
which... "In fact, I was wondering if you might be... willing to help
one of our Senior Weyrlings with his... little problem."
Karri quickly went through a mental checklist of the Senior Weyrlings as
she replied, "Sure, who and what?" **Please not L'rew... please not
L'rew...**
"It's L'rew..." The Weyrlingmaster said, confirming her worst fears.
"He seems to get along well enough with you, but I'm not sure he really
knows very much about women, being Holdbred and all."
"And what do you want _me_ to do." If T'mahl thought he got along well
with her, she'd hate to see how he reacted around other girls her age.
"Well, he is a senior weyrling, and he does need to get a little bit of
experience before graduation..." But T'mahl could tell by the look on
Karri's face that she was probably not pleased by the prospect. "I
could find someone else if you're not comfortable with the idea. I just
know he seems to like you..."
Karri frowned as she looked at the floor, anyone (well, not anyone, but
most anyone) else and she would have considered his request since it was
important for the safety of the dragons. L'rew on the other hand was
just out of the question, he hated her, and she couldn't stand him.
"Why do you think he likes me? He doesn't like anyone but his
dragon..."
"Yes, this has certainly not been a happy transition for him," T'mahl
sighed, stopping to lean back against the wall and cross his arms over
his chest. This was not a conversation that should be had in earshot of
others. "He tries to hide it, of course. He tries to fight it. Sooner
or later, though, if he doesn't get some of his frustration out, its
going boil over. The longer he waits, the worse it will be."
He was certainly talking about L'rew alright, "But why do you think I
will be able to help him?"
"Well, he actually talks to you and seems to seek your company out more
than others. It may be you were nice to him and he's latching onto
anyone who shows him any kindness." Many people try, but the boy always
seemed so suspicious of their motives. "I don't think it's an accident
that he's been in every class of yours he can be."
That didn't seem like the L'rew she knew, but she felt a twinge of pity
for him the way T'mahl was describing his behavior. Karri gave a deep
sigh, she really wanted nothing to do with him, but if she was the only
one he'd even _talk_ to... "I'll talk to him. I don't think it'll do
much good, but maybe I can move him in the right direction at least."
"Any direction would be helpful at this point." T'mahl had a whole new
crew of weyrlings to worry about. If Karri could handle L'rew it would
certainly help his work load.
