Characters: Kamalia, Arrilon
Description: Arrilon tries to talk some sense into Kamalia.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 11, day 16 of Turn 4
Notes: Comes right after "Bronzerider of Her Dreams"
"What's wrong with you? He was perfect! And his bronze wanted to
meet me. We were just going to see the dragon."
"Yeah, and I'm a wherry's uncle," Arrilon retorted, angrily ripping off a
piece of his bread roll.
"Maybe you are," Kamalia muttered.
He just ignored her. They had caused enough of a scene already. He
would wait until they had found a quiet place outside, where he could talk
some sense into her.
"Every single time I meet someone nice, you show up and ruin everything.
He was _nice_. Shard it, he was a bronzerider! Bronzeriders are
honorable."
"Don't curse," was all the reply he gave, although he could have spent
some time giving his opinion of just how 'honorable' bronzeriders, or in
fact any dragonriders, were.
Kamalia was furious. The first nice bronzerider to notice her would now
never see her again. Not with her brother trailing after her constantly. She
hoped he Impressed at the next Hatching, if for no other reason than to
give him someone else to constantly worry about. But, the Weyr was a
large place. Even if neither of them Impressed, there were plenty of
opportunities for her to get away from her overbearing brother. If only he
hadn't arrived when he had. She could have gone to meet the bronze
dragon, and have spent some more time with the bronzerider.
Arrilon ate quickly, then led his sister to a secluded spot just outside the
Weyr. She sat down, refusing to look at him. He, unable to stay still,
paced in front of her.
"Were you going to his weyr?"
"We were going to see his bronze."
"In his weyr?"
"I don't know. He didn't say."
"Definitely his weyr then. Do you really think he only wanted you to
meet his dragon?"
"Yes."
Arrilon sighed. She was so stubborn.
Kamalia sat still, resigned to having to listen to her brother lecture, but
already planning ways in which she could see the bronzerider without
Arrilon finding out. But, how could she meet him again? She knew
nothing about him.
"What's his name?" Arrilon asked, standing in front of her.
"I didn't have time to ask." **Unfortunately.** She couldn't even ask
around to find out more about him.
"See?!" he exclaimed, exasperated. Why didn't she understand? "You
don't even know this _bronzerider's_ name, and already he wants you to
follow him somewhere to, supposedly, meet his dragon. You don't know
his name. You don't know where you were going. What _do_ you
know?"
She knew it was a rhetorical question, but her patience was gone. "I know
that he was a nice person who came to sit with me when he saw I was
eating alone. He knew I was a Candidate, and asked if I wanted to see his
dragon. And, of course I wanted to. That's it!" That wasn't it, but she
wouldn't tell her brother about the kiss. He wouldn't understand.
"You're wrong. He was a man who saw that you were a young, innocent,
Candidate obsessed with bronzeriders and he wanted to take advantage of
you. That's why he didn't bother to learn your name."
"Shut up! Just Sharding shut up!" Kamalia got up, angry almost to the
point of tears. He would never understand how it felt to have someone
pay attention to her the way that bronzerider had. She had felt beautiful,
and special, as if he only had eyes for her. Without another word, she
quickly stood and began walking away.
Arrilon didn't know what else to say to her, but did follow behind her at a
distance, to make sure she didn't do anything stupid.
"I'm going to bed!" Kamalia yelled, knowing without turning back to look
that he was following.
Still, Arrilon followed until she had entered the candidate barracks. He
sat near the entrance for some time to be sure she didn't go out again.
Then, he went to his own bed, still unsure of how to stop his sister from
doing something she would regret.
Kamalia didn't go to sleep immediately. She was too emotional from the
events of the night. First, she had met the most wonderful man, and then
her brother had ruined it all. But, she would see the bronzerider again.
She was sure of it. The Weyr was big, but she would find him, somehow.
Her thoughts still on the bronzerider, Kamalia drifted off to sleep, a faint
smile on her lips.
