"Go get it boy." Lirit threw the ball, listening to make sure that no one was in the direction he was throwing - at least, not close by.
Hopefully he didn't hit anyone.
Fortunately, he didn't. The ball bounced harmlessly on the ground and came to a stop at the feet of a young woman. Scout ran after it, then stopped a couple of feet away from the girl. He looked up at her, his one blue and one brown eye questioning, his tail wagging, as if he were waiting her permission to get the ball.
Cosani looked from the canine to the ball at her feet. "You want this?" She picked up the ball with a grimace of distaste for the canine spit and tossed the ball over the canine's head.
Scout turned and trotted over to pick up the ball. Then, instead of going back to his owner, he turned back to Cosani and dropped the ball at his feet, sat down, and looked at her expectantly.
Cosani made another face. Great, now he thought she wanted to play with him. Although she did have to admit it was kind of ... cute. "One more, and that's it." She tossed the ball for the canine again.
Scout ran to the ball and brought it back, dropping it at her feet.
"Scout! Hey Scout!" The sound of his owner's voice made the dog turn and he wuffed softly before bounding over to Lirit and stopped at his side. The young man touched the head and then Scout moved away to sit down by the ball, barking softly once more. "What are you doing, boy?"
"He seems to think that since I threw the ball once, I'm going to keep doing it." The canines at the Hold were like that, too. This one was certainly better behaved than some of them.
Lirit turned toward the sound of the voice and leaned against his walking stick. He smiled to the person who spoke and nodded. "Yes, he does enjoy a game of fetch, and he'd probably do it forever if he could find someone to throw the ball forever."
"Well, that's not me."
"I'm afraid it's not me either." Lirit stated with a soft laugh. "A fact I think he finds rather disheartening. I say, I haven't made proper acquaintance. My name's Lirit."
"Cosani," she said.
Lirit thrust his hand out in the direction of the girl, but he didn't take hers. Instead, it hung there expectantly. "Well met, Cosani."
She took his hand and shook briefly. "Well met." Many people at the weyr were friendlier than she'd expected them to be. They didn't seem stuck up, not even the dragonriders. Her fellow Candidates had been the rudest to her so far.
"Are you a dragonrider?" The harper queried, cocking his head to the side. She had given no indication of her rank and, of course, while his was obvious by his knots, hers was not so to him.
"No. Not yet," she said. "I'm a Candidate."
"Ah, very nice, very nice." Lirit rubbed his chin, his sightless eyes gazing past her in a thoughtful manner. "Gold I think. Yes, yes, I think gold."
Cosani frowned. "You're making fun of me."
"No." Lirit stated firmly, his smile warm. "I'm complimenting you."
"Well ... thank you, then," she muttered. She didn't believe it was a compliment, though. She thought it was just flattery, and she wondered why he would want to flatter her.
"It's almost dinner time." Lirit remarked after a moment, his head cocked slightly to the side. Scout mimiced him, sitting beside his owner. "Care to join me?"
"Are you flirting with me?" She'd been warned that men at a Weyr only wanted one thing. Although she'd met a few men that seemed genuinely nice, she was on guard.
"Not unless you want me to." Lirit's smile flashed again. "To be honest, I do prefer to have company at dinner. It gets rather boring sitting and eating by myself."
Maybe he _was_ just being nice, but she didn't trust him. "I'd rather eat alone."
Lirit's smile remained true and he nodded, bowing to her. "As the lady wishes. Well, it was nice meeting you Cosani. Perhaps I shall have the pleasure of your company at some later date."
"We'll see," she said before walking away.
