U'kaiah's hands tightened around her hips, his lips and breath tickling her ear. "Threadfall's early in the sevenday so I should be able to be in Dolphin Cove right after drills."

Traelyn smiled, leaning back into him. "And then you have your choice, love: a long soak in my bathing pool, or a long soak in the ocean."

"Can't we do both?" he chuckled, wrapping his arms fully around her. Letting her go was sometimes just so hard.

"Think you'll have enough energy to do both?" she teased, turning around in his arms to rub her cheek against his chest. "You know what happens when we're alone together and naked...."

"I do have a pretty good guess," the bronzerider grinned as he leaned in closer to brush his lips across hers. "Safe flying, love."

She smiled up at him. "Thanks." After one more kiss, she slipped from his arms and headed towards Kalamath's weyr. The bronze was crouched on his couch, large head swiveled towards Nyith, who was looking serenely over her golden shoulder at him. As Traelyn approached, the queen crooned softly to the bronze--her goodbye--and then carefully made her way further out onto the ledge. Dutifully her rider followed her, fastening her jacket and pulling on her gloves....then she paused at Nyith's extended foreleg, helmet under her arm, gazing up into her dragon's swirling eyes.
**Nyith....**

}:You've been worrying about this all day. I could hear you,:{ Nyith told her, crouching lower, folding her wings along her back. }:Even when you tried not to think about it, you still thought about it.:{
**I should have talked to the Weyrhealer long before now. I don't know why I haven't.**

Nyith dipped her head, tip of her nose touching Traelyn's brow. }:You are afraid.:{ Shards. She closed her eyes, reaching up to press her leatherclad fingers against Nyith's jaw. **Yes.**

Nyith crooned softly. She couldn't understand her lifemate's fear. Sometimes human emotions were too complex for her draconic logic. All she knew was that her rider was plagued by past memories entwined with a desperate....hope? Was that what it was called? }:I wish you would talk to him.:{ Traelyn's eyes snapped open. She knew which "him" her dragon meant.
**Nyith...**

}:He can help you in ways I cannot.:{
**I can't tell him.**

}:Cannot? Or will not? He is your mate. He can help:{ She shook her head and made to climb up her dragon's foreleg...but once again she hesitated. Shards, she couldn't do it.

"Trae?" U'kaiah asked as he peeked around the curtain. He had been expecting to hear the echo of the watchdragon's farewell bugle and had decided to check to make sure everything was all right.

}:He comes.:{ Traelyn turned her head, watching as U'kaiah approached. Shards! She couldn't face him. Not now. Not about this. But....she couldn't run either. She didn't want to leave. Torn, she stayed rooted to the spot, gloved hand still curled around the tip of her dragon's nose.

A cool breeze slipped past him as he closed the curtain behind him. It made him shiver slightly. "Is anything wrong?"

She bit her lower lip, looking down. Shards. He'd see right through her lie--he knew her too well to accept whatever flimsy excuse she could come up with. There wasn't any way she could manipulate him like she did B'ram....and it made her sick to even think about twisting U'kaiah's emotions like she played off of B'ram's arrogance and insecurity. ....But, why _was_ she running? If she was pregnant, everyone would have to know sooner or later. Nyith really had touched on the matter of it...she was afraid. Afraid of rejection, of appearing soft, of opening up an old wound that she had fought so long to close.

}:He can help. Talk to him.:{ Traelyn took a deep breath, and--steeling herself--she looked up at him.

"What is it?" U'kaiah asked softly, her silence speaking volumes -
whatever it was, it was serious, and for once she didn't seem to be running away. "Tell me."

"I think I'm pregnant."

The bronzerider just blinked for a few moments completely dumb-struck. His brain felt numb, as if this were not really happening. He suddenly realized he was just staring, jaw agape, and quickly closed his mouth. "Uh..." he finally mumbled, feeling his tongue had suddenly lost all ability to form coherent words. "So... You think so? Or do you _know_
so?"

Shardit, she hadn't _meant_ for it to come out that way! Furious with herself for her blunder, she clenched her jaw, looking down. "I think so."

After a couple deep breaths the shock was beginning to wear off. This was certainly unexpected, thought not necessarily bad. After all, things like this happened sometimes. "All right," he said quietly, reaching out for her hands. "So then... if you are... what are you going to do?"

"Keep it," she replied softly.

"But that's great, then, right?" he asked, finally beginning to smile. "I mean, I always thought you would be a wonderful mother. If you're going to have a baby, that's wonderful!"

Would he still think it was so wonderful even though it may not be his? Shards, if she was..... She wanted it to be his. "You think I'd be a wonderful mother?"

He pulled her close and wrapped his long arms around her. "I always _knew_ you would be a wonderful mother."

Wonderful was too high-reaching. Shards, she settle for aiming to be just a good mother, but she didn't say it. Shying away from that train of thought, she murmured, "I'm going to talk to the healer today. To make sure...either way."

He wished there was some way he could go with her, but he knew with the time difference it would be impossible. "You'll let me know what they say?"

Her fingers clenched nervously in his tunic. "Of course I will." Nyith crooned her unwavering support as Traelyn leaned back to look her lover in the eye. "As soon as I know."

The bronzerider was quiet a moment as he considered his next question. He had never expected her to be faithful to him. Quite the opposite, in fact. Faranth knew how lonely the sevenday could get, and he certainly found ways to pass the time. But he did want to know... "Can I ask... Do you think it's mine?"

Shards. "I...." She hesitated, then whispered, "I want it to be yours."

That was no answer. Or maybe it was. If she had known it was his, she would have said so definitively. Either she didn't know, or she knew it wasn't. U'kaiah was surprised by the momentary stab. He wanted it to be his, too. "Oh well," he finally murmured with a shrug. "It's yours, and that's enough for me."
