Your Whole Life

Writers: Avery, Eimi
Date Posted: 3rd November 2007

Characters: T'mahl, Talwynn
Description: T'mahl comes by to talk to Talwynn.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 6, day 9 of Turn 4

Talwynn looked up from her bed in the Infirmary as she heard the curtains being pushed aside. She expected it to be another healer coming to check on her, but it wasn't. She smiled as she saw her visitor.
"Weyrlingmaster." she said.

"Talwynn," T'mahl said, trying to give her an encouraging smile. He had not officially been her Weyrlingmaster, but considering the man who previously held the office was rarely around, he might as well have been. The bronzerider felt it was his duty to offer what comfort and encouragement he could. The was an element of guilt behind the visit.
This was the hardest thing for him. Afterall, he had been responsible for her training. But more than that, there was the guilt that the sight of her made his stomach churn. "How are you feeling?"

"It hurts." she said softly. "Sometimes I don't know if it's Riveth or I. The medication helps, but they tell me I can't stay on it forever."

"It doesn't hurt forever," he assured her, taking a seat on the side with her good arm. T'mahl just couldn't bare looking at the other one.

"That's good. I'm going to have to re-learn so much." the greenrider said with a sigh. "Not just the cane, but well..." She had been left-handed, so the loss of use of her arm was a terrible blow for her.
"Everything."

"You'll be fine. You'll be surprised how fast you learn to cope." He had watched several of his wingmates go through exactly what she would be facing.

"I'll have a lot of time to." she said somberly. She was in no state to do anything, and Riveth wasn't going to be able to fly for months. **If ever.** she thought, trying to keep it from the green. "I don't think they're going to let me do anything any time soon."

"Well, you'll have your whole life," T'mahl pointed out gently. "You will survive this, Talwynn."

"That's true. I could have lost Riveth- that would have been worse."

"I have been told that Riveth's chances of a full recovery are good.
You'll be able to ride her again." Just not against Thread. Which actually was not as horrible a fate as some would suppose.

"I can't wait, though I know it'll be time." She was touched that T'mahl had heard about her green's prognosis, knowing that others care. "But what will I do then?"

"You can do whatever you want to do."

**Like craft...** Talwynn hadn't had time to properly watch the stars in awhile. She missed that most of all. But at the same time, she was a dragonrider. She had to do something for the weyr. "Maybe could I help with the weyrlings, once in awhile? Eventually?"

"Of course you can. When we have weyrlings, that is." He gave her a small smile to tell her he was trying to make a joke.

She laughed. It was nice to be able to find something to laugh at. "I hope you haven't been bored without us."

The Weyrlingmaster chuckled softly, looking down at his hands. "If Kapera's gold hadn't risen, I think I could have earned my Master's knots within a Turn."

"Perhaps you'll still have time to earn them, depending on when Onnyth rises." Since she hadn't flown yet, and golds took longer to mature, it was possible T'mahl could have another wait.

"I truly hope not," T'mahl sighed. The Weyr couldn't take much more waiting. Especially when it was still losing riders like Talwynn. "I think the dragons know. We won't have too long to wait, I'm sure."

"This wait was bad enough." Knowing she had been one of the last weyrling clutch was hard for Talwynn. She knew all about the importance of golds, and having indefinite leadership and a lack of new dragons was depressing for the weyr. "But at least we'll have the new ones."

"Yes, it is a great blessing." And none too soon! "Well, I ought to be going. But do you need anything? Is there anything I can get you?"

"Thank you for coming. Feel free to stop by anytime, I'm not going anywhere." the greenrider said with a small laugh. She pondered his question. "Can you assign a candidate or two who's been around for awhile to take care of Riveth for me? I know the dragonhealers are feeding her, but I'm sure they don't want to wash her, too."

The Weyrlingmaster nodded. "As soon as the healers clear her, I promise she will be washed and oiled until she shines on a regular basis."

Talwynn smiled. She knew Riveth would be well taken care of, and if she couldn't do it, at least T'mahl would get someone who knew how. "Thank you sir."
