Shattered 3: Dragonhealing

Writers: Avery, Kaysea
Date Posted: 3rd November 2007

Characters: Talwynn, J'gen
Description: Suuth calms Riveth as J'gen works on her.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 6, day 6 of Turn 4

}:The draught you gave her is working, but the wing needs more weed:{ Suuth informed his rider.

**Just try and keep her steady - please?** J'gen replied, **I've had to remove the numbweed to wash down her wing with redwort, before I can start the repairs, but if she keeps moving this way, we'll never be finished and her pain will continue. Try and make her understand that, will you?**

Riveth listened and tried to still herself. It _hurt_ and the green wanted to flinch away from it. She could feel the pain and feel what the healers were doing. She knew it would help, but she wanted it to stop now, not in the future. But Suuth was helping. }:I understand.:{ she said reluctantly and stilled.

"Thankfully the Thread appears to have landed in the one area, and though it looks quite bad now, it means she won't be grounded for much more than a month, maybe a sevenday more or less." J'gen spoke to the other healers, but we need to knit as much of the sail that is left, as we can - give her a better chance of keeping full mobility.

**Thank you Suuth and you too Riveth, you're being a very brave girl. I promise we'll work as quickly as possible on you.** he continued for the dragons benefit.

Riveth turned her head to watch the person. Her wing hurt, but she saw the man doing something. Talwynn had told her that he would make her better, and she clung to that thought. Suuth had told her, too.

}:Is my wing very bad?:{ she asked Suuth.

Suuth lifted his head, and peered over the top of the green, watching his lifemate working. **I've seen J'gen mend worse.** he replied evasively. **If he says you'll be flying again within the month, you can take his word for it." He settled back down again, his eyes holding with Riveth's, **Does it hurt still?**

She would be flying again. It had been one of her and her rider's fears.
}:It is better now.:{ the green said.

J'gen was bent to the task of mending the shredded wing sail, piecing together to smallest of shreds while he considered the fact that the green had been very lucky to have suffered from clumping which had affected one area only, instead of a floating Thread which might have covered her whole side. He suspected her rider might have taken the worst of it, too.

They had managed to patch the broken veins, and licor no longer spurted from the wingspar, but they would need to keep an close watch as a sudden movement, even small, may stretch the stitches and open the wound again.

**Can you ask Riveth to lift her wing just a fraction, so we can get underneath with the extra support?** he asked Suuth, as a couple of weyrfolk dragged the wooden frame across to them. The need to make smaller repairs from underneath would tire the already exhausted dragon, and with tiredness could come further damage unless they provided the support to the open wing.

}:Can you slowly lift your wing, just a little, they need to give you higher support. Slowly:{ Riveth followed instructions, very slowly lifting her wing up. }:Here?:{ she asked, looking at the people bringing a strange thing.

**Ask her if she can hold steady for just a few moments?**

}:You're doing fine, J'gen just asked you to hold still for a little while longer, while they get the support into place:{ He watched as the support was moved under the green's wing, and adjusted so that it took the majority of her wings weight, before J'gen asked that she slowly relax while they finished the work to the membranes underneath.

}:Does that feel better, now that you can rest?:{ }:Yes.:{ the green replied. Taking the weight off of her wing was very good.

It didn't take more than another candlemark for J'gen and the other healers to finish the painstaking task of knitting together all of the fine membranes of the greens wing, back breaking work, but much needed to save the use of the greens wing.

the wound was splashed top and bottom with redwort to retard infections, then Riveth's wing was caked in numbweed to reduce the greens pain.

**She'll need to sit here a while yet, to give the wing some time to relax after the work we've just finished.** J'gen intoned tiredly to Suuth. **I'll come back in a candlemark, and check how she's doing, and the wound to make sure we have stitched everything up. Tell her to stay as still as possible for a little while longer.**

**I'll send a water bowl and some fresh kill over for her shortly. All she needs now is rest. I'll have someone go and check on her rider now, and I'll let her know shorlty how Talwynn is doing."

Suuth passed on his riders instructions, as well as assuring Riveth he would stay to keep her company for as long as possible.

Resting and water, as well as the possibility of food. Riveth liked that. And Suuth was a very nice dragon, so she would not be bored.
}:Thank you.:{ she told the other dragon. }:How will I get food after this?:{ the green asked, completely unaware that she would soon forget it again.

}:You'll be hunted for, I expect:{ Suuth replied reassuringly. }:Food and water will be brought to you for as long as you can't hunt and kill for yourself. We do it all the time in the infirmary. I'm one of the hunters:{ he replied, puffing his chest out proudly.

}:You must make many kills, then.:{ she said, admiring him. }:I am very tired.:{ the green added. }:How will I sleep?:{ }:Once your wing has rested a little, they'll help you move the infirmary couches. See the frame is on small wheels to help them move it?:{ Suuth replied, his head dropping low as he touched the small wheels at he bottom of the support frame.

Riveth looked down at it. }:I see.:{ she said. The pain had stopped and the support made it easier to brace. Naturally, the green's thoughts turned to Talwynn. }:My rider?:{ }:I'm sure your rider will be fine, I haven't heard from J'gen yet, but if anything happens, I'm sure we'll be the first to know:{ he was used to injured dragons being full of questions, Riveth was no different to the others he had kept company following an injury during fall.

}:Here's your water:{ he indicated as some drudges approached with a large hide and wooden construction, followed by more with buckets of slopping water.

When the water was within reach, Riveth drank it. She felt better after drinking it, and was relieved that Suuth was going to tell her about her rider when he found out. She was alive, and she could feel that her rider still was. Whatever happened, they had that.
