U'kaiah carefully cradled his peace offerings against his arm as he knocked on the Weyrwoman's office door. They had managed to to speak civilly in front of Kaiafel the day before, but he had the feeling it was mostly for the boy's sake, and not that anything had been resolved between them.

He wondered why it was that his son was the one thing that could bring them both together again. This was the third time his son's presence had smoothed over arguments between himself and the Weyrwoman. If their relationship, whatever it may be, was ever to work, the bronzerider knew he and Jaela had to learn to solve these fights together, and not hide behind the little boy. And so U'kaiah had decided that he would face the goldrider without Kaiafel, with only an arm full of sweets direct from the Baker Hall to hide behind...

Jaela answered the knock on her office and found herself face to face with...a basket. "Um..."

"I hear you like sweet things, and since I'm not back to full duty I have lots of time on my hands." He smiled as he held the basket out for the Weyrwoman to smell.

She wondered if he knew how what he'd just said could be taken two different ways and had to bite her cheek to keep from laughing as she stood on her tiptoes to peek inside the offered basket.
"Hmm....are there sweet rolls in there? I'm picky you know..."

"There is a couple sweet rolls, a couple cookies, a couple bubbly pies and I think some cake." U'kaiah was pretty sure the man at the baker's hall had taken him in good. When he asked for advice of what kind of sweets a woman might like, the man was full of ideas, and the bronzerider had been anxious enough to please that he had bought any and everything suggested.

"Oh, Kaiafel better not hear about this one...he'd be jealous. Bring those couple of sweetrolls in here and have a seat." She really shouldn't be this easy, but it _was_ sweetrolls directly from Baker Hall...and it was U'kaiah--who had the most charming smile when he wasn't being annoying...

The bronzerider set the basket on her desk before settling into the chair. So far so good. "It seems you and Kaiafel have been spending a lot of time together recently. I wonder if you don't see the boy more often than _I_ do."

Jaela reached into the basket and emerged triumphantly with her sweetroll. "Well....he likes to bathe Calyth because she's _very_ big you know...and well, he likes to try to scare me..."

"Scare you?" U'kaiah wasn't sure if it was even _possible_ to scare the Weyrwoman. "Does he succeed?"

"Only when I remember to pretend he's done so!"

"Ah." He chuckled as he imagined the scene in his mind. It was rather sweet. "You're very good with him, you know. And he has grown very attached to you."

"Really?" She thought about that for a moment before taking a bite out of her roll and chewing it completely. "Does that bother you?"

"Not at all. I enjoy seeing the two of you together." He reached in the basket and pulled out a cookie. "I do wish, though, that you and I could find a way to make peace with each other _without_ my son being the catalyst, though."

"Well, there is that..." Jaela set her roll down and sighed. "The last time was _not_ my fault though. No matter what I said, you were shellbent on being defensive about Traelyn's mistake." She shrugged.
"I want you and you know it. But I'm not going to play second gitar to all of your friendships, U'kaiah. It's not fair to ask it."

"I can understand that." The bronzerider set his cookie down on the edge of the desk and folded his arms across his chest lazily. "But you do seem fond of attacking my friends in front of me. Whether you chose to see the good in them or not, they are still people I care deeply about. They have their flaws, and they make their mistakes, but in the end they are good people. I would not be their friend otherwise. You can think what you want of them, but you have to realize that the fact that I care for them, and will defend them, will not change. But I would rather not spend all my time defending them to you. I would rather spend the time we have together in much nicer ways."

She smiled. "You just did it again...that defensive thing. You spend a whole lot of sentences on them, and one on _me_." She shook her head. "I'm not overly girly, bronzerider, but I'm starting to feel...less than appreciated!"

"All right, then lets just agree that you will never like my friends, and that I will never _stop_ liking them, and that's the end of it. We won't talk about them anymore." He picked up his cookie again. "So let's talk about me instead. You haven't even said _one_ sentence about _me_ yet."

"Well....I like the way you...bite your cookie..."

"Yes, I bet you've never wished you were a cookie so much in your life,"
he responded with a minimal spray of crumbs from his cookie crammed mouth.

Jaela's laugh rang through the room. "And I thought only _Calyth_ could read my thoughts!"

He leaned forward, licking crumbs from his fingers and wiping crumbs from his lap. "And can you read _my_ thoughts?"

One of her brows rose. "Only...actions...but they're usually pretty accurate."

"They do say that actions speak louder than words." He grinned as a sly smile spread across his lips. "I was just thinking that your _sweet rolls_ look might nice, and I wouldn't mind a taste."

"I wouldn't mind them being tasted, I'm thinking. So much...sweetness to offer, I'd hate to see it go to waste. Just make sure you share your...cookies with me."

"Oh, believe me, there are plenty of cookies left for you to have your fill." The bronzerider's eyes gleamed with mischief as he walked around the desk and stood behind her. He then reached over her fished around in the basket of goodies on her desk. "Actually, I am a bubbly pie man, myself. Do you like bubbly pies? They're wonderfully sweet and sticky."

She tried not to laugh. "I love hot and sticky actually. The messier the better...."

"Well, good. Try one of these, then." He brought one of the warm bubbly pies closer to her lips. "They're full of messy goodness."

She licked the syrupy edge before taking a delicate bite out of it.
"Mmm...." She swallowed. "It's no fun unless you share."

"That is true." The bronzerider grinned as he slipped a finger inside the pastry, brought out a glob of glistening fruit filling and brought it tantalizingly close to her lips. "Now, for me, it is the things they put _in_ the bubbly pies that make them great, don't you think?"

"I agree wholeheartedly, bronzerider..." Taking his hand in her own, she leaned over to lick the filling from his finger. "Delicious."

U'kaiah swallowed hard. Shards she was good at that! "It certainly seems like it." He dipped his finger in again, and with a mischievous grin dabbed a bit right in the deliciously sensitive place where her jaw met her neck and proceeded to lick and nibble the spot clean.

Her eyes fluttered shut and suddenly she forgot she was in her office and that they were supposed to just be eating the baked goods, not slathering on themselves. Responsibility was so overrated sometimes. "Taste good?" His lips found a particularly sensitive spot and bit her lip to keep from moaning.

"Very," he whispered against her skin as he moved his lips lower down her neck, enjoying the taste of berry, and the unquie taste that was Jaela. He dropped the bubbly on the desk, completely ignoring the sticky mess it would leave, as he slipped his arms around her.

Any other time, the control freak in her would have cared where the bubbly landed, what papers it might have ruined. Suddenly, she couldn't muster up the control to care and wrapped her arms around U'kaiah in reciprocation, her lips seeking his automatically.

His lips met hers hungrily. The fingers of one hand ran along the back of her neck and into her hair as he pulled her closer. Stinging jibes, sarcastic remarks, angry words, slights real and imagined melted away like the sugar on their tongues.

Why couldn't they be like this _all_ time? Maybe the secret was not talking--or at least not talking about anything besides sweets, U'kaiah's son and...she lost her train of thought and concentrated on the man in her arms.

}: U'kaiah, Solith's rider is waiting. :{ "Oh shards," U'kaiah groaned as he reluctantly pulled his lips away from hers. "I have a meeting with Kenza." **It figures!**

"Crackdust..." Jaela set her hand down...and it landed right in the discarded bubbly on her desk. "And just to make my day a _little_ bit brighter..." She shook her head. "Um...thanks for the snack?"

"Anytime. I wish I could stay longer. There are a lot more treats in there we haven't even gotten to yet." He smiled at the thought of what he could do with the frosting from those cute little cakes he bought... Sighing, he released her and stood back up to his full height. "How do I look? Any crumbs? Filling? Sweetner? You know Kenza would kill me if she knew I went to the Baker Hall and didn't bring her back anything."

Jaela held up her sticky hand. "I'd brush you off but them I'm afraid you'd definitely be caught..." She licked her finger slowly. "No crumbs but your hair is a mess..."

The bronzerider stiffled a groan as his eyes were drawn to her tongue moving across her fingers. "Sharing meetings," he muttered. He walked back to the door before he could change his mind and stay longer. As he opened it he grinned at her over his shoulder. "Maybe you can bring me a treat or two later... if there are any left."

She licked her finger again just so she could see that look in his eyes again. "I told I liked to share. You know where to find me if you want more...sweets."

The bronzerider cleared his suddenly hoarse throat and replied, "I think it's your turn to find me." With another frustrated groan he closed the door.
