"Hello Saria," Kiala said as she approached the girl. "How are you today?"
"Fine." Saria said with a smile as she patted another batch of the pie dough flat. She was glad she decided to work outside the kitchen this morning. Not only was it cooler but it was also a better chance to meet people. "Yourself?" She knew the girl wasn't a rider, and not by her knots, but she couldn't exactly remember her name. Which was sad because everyone knew her name.
"Good, good. We were let out early from the Candidate classes thank goodness, so I thought I might be able to come down to the kitchens a nip a snack." She noticed the blank look Saria had given her and said, "My name is Kiala. We haven't really talked all the much."
"I'm sorry Kiala. I'm just used to hearing dragon names first." She smiled to take the sting out of her forgetfulness. "I'd offer my hand but its covered in dough."
Kiala smiled back. "It's ok. I can't imagine how it must be to hear dragons all day. And don't worry about the dough. In fact, if there's anything I could help you with..." Kiala trailed off, glancing around.
Saria grabbed a hunk of dough from the large bowl and slammed it down on the other end of the flour covered table. "Wash your hands, dust 'em with some flour and kneed that." She instructed.
"Yes ma'am!" Kiala said and did as she was instructed.
As she was kneeding the dough, she said, "How do you like it here at the Weyr?"
"Its, different. And not just because I can hear the dragons." Saria said with a smirk as she wiped sweat off of her forhead with a bare arm, leaving a trail of flour. "I like the fact that I can practice my craft without being looked at like I betrayed my family, and the people are nice." She grinned. "But I'd have to say my favorite part is waking up to seeing dragons fly by outside my window. It's like living a dream, seeing dragons in the sky."
Kiala smiled back. "Yes, that is definitely a plus, living here in the Weyr! I have to admit, I like that aspect of Weyr life too!" She had finished kneading the dough and turned to Saria. "Okay, what do I do now?"
Saria took out to rolling pins, one for herself one for the girl. "We roll them flat." She said handing the girl a roller. "Then I'll show you how were cutting it."
Kiala grinned and said, "Right-o." She began rolling the dough out, not realising how much muscle was actually put into making the dough flat and even. After a time, she looked up at Saria. "Okay, I think I've got this flat enough now. What are we making, by the way?"
"Pie crusts." Saria said as she showed the girl how to cut circles out of the flattened dough, and place them on a pile in between two piece of waxed paper. "See this way," She explained lifting a pie crust in example. "The pie crusts will come right off each other when I put them on the pies for dinner this evening."
"Oh! Wonderful! I love pies for dessert," Kiala said, licking her lips. She started following Saria's directions, making sure to follow the girl's every move. "So what kind of pies are you planning to make?"
"See the dough you have has more sweetner in it, so it goes on the desert pies. The ones I'm rolling are for the dinner pies." Saria explained, deftly adding another crust to the pile. "We're having wherry and leak, and herdbeast and tubers for dinner and redfruit, apple, and berry pie for desert." Saria told the girl.
"I must say, I'm impressed at all the work that goes into making dinner!" Kiala said and shook her head. "I knew there must be a lot of food that had to be prepared to feed everyone, but it sure is a lot of work! Do you like working in the kitchens?"
"I do. Its been my dream since I was a little girl to be a baker." Saria said fondly. "I've always had a knack for it, cooking and baking and such."
"I'm glad you do! If you didn't, we sure wouldn't be able to have such a good dinner tonight!" Kiala said enthusiastically, adding another crust to her slowly growing pile. It seemed like Saria worked at twice the speed of Kiala, but she also had the experience to do that, Kiala reasoned to herself, while carefully cutting another crust out from her dough. "Oh I don't get to pick the dinner, thats the Headwoman's job. I just get to prepare it." Saria said as she watched the girls progress. The circles were a little choppy, but nothing she couldn't handle.
Besides that the girls skill was good. "You're pretty good at this Kiala. Ever think of becoming a baker?" she asked with a wink.
Kiala laughed. "Well, I don't know about a baker, but I'm an apprentice beasthealer, so I'm good with my hands. At least I have that much going for me," Kiala replied, winking back. "Besides, I think you can cook circles around me."
"It's all about practice." Saria said. "I'm sure its te same with beasthealing. The more you do it the better you get. That's why we start out as apprentices."
Kiala grinned and finished off her last pie crust.
"Isn't that the truth!" She brushed the flour off the front of her tunic and leaned against the counter. "Well, I probably should be going so you can fix dinner. If you get a chance, you're more than welcome to join me at dinner tonight. If you're not busy."
"Oh no I'm free for dinner I just have to cook it, not serve it." Saria said as she took the trays carrying the pie crusts in her hands. "I'll find you, and I might even bring a little surprise." She wiggled her eyebrows to show her enthusiasm.
