**I should've brought a blanket,** Traelyn thought with a sigh as she wrapped her arms around herself, looking down at her sleeping queen. Nyith seemed like she was resting peacefully, but Traelyn knew better. The dragon's drowsy thoughts were restless, which was certainly nothing unusual. It was normal for brooding dragon queens to have their restless nights, but that didn't mean it was easy to bear--for themselves, or for their riders. Which was the reason why Traelyn was up at this candlemark. When Nyith felt restless, Traelyn felt it too.
She watched as the queen shifted yet again, one glowing eye slitting open a little as she tucked her tail around her forelegs. It would be better once they were back home at Dolphin Cove. Nyith would certainly rest easier, and Traelyn could finally overcome the sharding feeling of uselessness that plagued the back of her mind. She couldn't help the guilt she felt about sitting here in Dragonsfall's Stands, day after day, doing nothing but writing correspondence to those at Dolphin Cove, while the people of her Weyr were working as hard as they could to rebuild what they'd lost to the hurricane. But there was one thing that Traelyn did not regret about her current situation, and that was U'kaiah.
A small smile touched her lips. If there was one good thing that had come about for her because of the disastrous storm, the developing understanding between she and U'kaiah was it. There was still a hesitancy there, on both of their parts, and even a little fear, but Traelyn relished the feelings. Shards, she hadn't felt this way with a man since she was a girl just coming into womanhood. And it felt good. Again, she smiled, and leaned forward to rest her elbows on her knees.
A blanket came to rest over her as first one leg and then another appeared on either side of her. U'kaiah's chin came groggily to rest on her shoulder, his arms reaching to pull the blanket over to surround her. "How long have you been here?" he asked, his words rough and slurred with sleepiness.
"Long enough to be eternally thankful for the blanket you brought me, U'kaiah," she grinned, leaning back against him.
"I brought klah too," he said as he slipped his arms under hers to wrap around her.
"Mmmmm. Perfect. I'm awake half the night anyway...might as well be alert!"
"Is Nyith alright?" he asked, his eyes half closed as he enjoyed the warmth they shared.
"She's a bit more restless tonight than she has been these past couple days." Shifting, she curled her hand around his arm. "But it's more of a natural restlessness, if you know what I mean." Rather than restlessness brought on by the fact that she was not in her own Weyr...
Not really. Restless was just restless to U'kaiah, but he accepted that he couldn't really understand what it was like to be a goldrider any more than he could understand being a woman. But it sounded like it wasn't a bad thing. "I'm glad to hear that," the bronzerider murmured, turning his head to kiss cheek softly.
"Mmm." Closing her eyes, she rested her head on his shoulder. "Did you know that when you sleep, you sometimes chuckle a little?"
He opened an eye a little wider. "I do what?"
She grinned at his tone. "You chuckle."
"Like loudly?"
"Not loudly." Her eyes fluttered open and she turned her head to look at him, tracing her fingers along his arm. "Quietly. You're the first person I've ever met who chuckles in their sleep. What do you dream about that's so funny, hmm?"
"I don't know," he laughed softly. "Maybe about the feline sounds you make when you cuddle up to me. Like a little feline whine."
"A feline whine? I didn't even know felines _could_ whine!" Her amused expression turned thoughtful. "At least it's better than snoring."
His expression also became a bit more somber. "Or crying. You've cried in your sleep before."
Traelyn looked down, feeling suddenly very self-conscious. **I have?** "I guess everyone gets plagued by nightmares at least once in their lifetime."
He pulled her closer. "I didn't mind. I just wished I could have changed your dreams for you."
Her fingers slid down to interlock with his as she searched his face for a moment. Then she leaned in and pressed her lips to his.
U'kaiah reached up to lightly cup her face as he returned the kiss tenderly. Kissing Trae was still very new, but he was already learning new things about her by the way she kissed. He had learned that she could be quite sultry, passionate, almost demanding at times, and questioning, uncertain, teasing, even shy at others. This kiss held deeper meanings he was just starting to understand. He wasn't completely sure what she was trying to say with that kiss, but he did know he could feel it deep down in his gut, like a dull ache, a deep longing. Was this what she felt when she kissed him? He didn't know, but shards, it was almost painfully exquisite.
Leaning back, Traelyn brushed the tip of her nose against his, the movement almost shy. "I'm glad you came out here."
His arms tightened around her once more as he brushed his nose and his lips across hers. "I wouldn't leave you alone."
