Traelyn gazed at the empty space next to her on the bed, feeling numb. He
hadn't come back. Not once during the whole night. Everything was as it
had been the night before, save the furs, which were tangled around
Traelyn due to her restless tossing and turning. Sleep hadn't come easily
to her last night, and when it finally came, it had been broken, her
dreams faceted.

She vaguely wondered if U'kaiah had gotten any sleep on the sofa, and a
part of her--the prideful, hurt part--hoped that he hadn't. It would mean
that he'd been just as affected by last night as she had been. But where
she welcomed it with open arms....he'd rejected it. Rejected her. It
still stung, deeply, to remember the distant look in his eyes when he'd
kissed her forehead before rising from the bed, leaving her to lay there
alone with an aching, unfulfilled desire thrumming through her, and with
her thoughts in a whirlwind state of confusion and fear.

Closing her eyes, Traelyn curled her arm tighter around the pillow. What
would they do now?

U'kaiah had barely slept at all. There was no stopping the images that
had filled his mind, or the aching longing they produced - images of
things that had happened, images of things that _could_ have happened...
Those were the worst, the hardest to control. Imagining pulling that
sharding tie, and the next, and the next... No, he didn't sleep much
either, and he was almost ashamed as he finally let the fantasy consume
him.

When light finally had poured across him, he decided sleep was no use.
The day had come, and soon she would be awake. And then they would
finally have to figure out the answer to the question that was in the
forefront of his mind... **What will we do now?**

Movement in the other room caught her attention, and Traelyn froze. He
was awake. Shards... Would he come to her? Should she go to him? Would
he leave the weyr? No, he wouldn't leave...if he'd wanted to, he would've
done so last night. Keeping her eyes shut, she trained her ear on him. It
sounded like he was padding around the room, moving things. She heard the
chink of glass against glass, the swish of material against skin as he
walked. What could she say to him? Would he look her in the eye?

He didn't intend to look her in the eye. At least not yet. But as he
walked passed the open doorway to his sleeping room, he made the mistake
of looking in out of habit to see if she was awake. This time she was,
and intentional or not, their eyes met. He stopped in his tracks. If he
looked away now, it would seem so guilty... **Time to face the morning
after...** He gave her a small smile as he leaned against the doorjam.
"Good morning. Did you just wake up?"

She nodded. It was painful to return his smile.

All right, this was already terribly awkward... He pushed himself off the
wooden frame and crawled across the bed to lean back against the
headboard. "I suppose we should talk about what happened."

"I suppose so." She tried to keep her tone neutral, but shards was it
hard. And as she glanced up at him, she knew she couldn't tell him why
she did it, why it had been more than just acting on impulse, more than
just the wine getting to her head, making her touch him like that, kiss
him like that.... It would just be too much for him. Too much...

During his restless night that was one of the questions that had troubled
him. Was it really just the heat of the moment? Had there been signs he
had missed? The only answer he knew for sure was that even if they both
decided it was what they wanted, even if they felt something more than
friendship for each other, if they acted on those feelings and if they
were wrong... **I can't lose you...** He reached down and tugged on her
hand. "Come here," he said softly, pulling her closer.

Traelyn didn't resist. She folded herself carefully around him, resting
her head on his shoulder. It was such a familiar way they sat together,
but there was something missing. Something innocent, something
comfortable.
Closing her eyes, she rubbed her cheek against him.

U'kaiah was not oblivious to the change. All he could hope was that it
would right itself in time. He wrapped his fingers gently around hers as
they sat in silence for a few moments. Finally he turned and kissed the
top of her head softly. "Nothing has to change, Trae," he murmured
quietly. "We've been friends a long time, and it's only natural that
we'd... be curious. Too much wine just got the best of us and... well we
let our curiosity get the better of us too. It was bound to happen some
time or another. But that doesn't mean anything has to change between
us."

"You regret it?" she asked quietly, expression unreadable as she stared
down at the rumpled furs.

**I don't know...** "I regret that I hurt you." He regretted that
friendship and sex could be so complicated.

She stiffened. He hadn't directly answered her question, and his evasive
answer made her wonder...but it was still less than reassuring. "Yeah...
Being left alone didn't feel that great, U'kaiah."

"Leaving didn't feel that great either..." But shards, if he hadn't
left... And considering how awkward things were just after a little
kissing, how would the morning have been if they had...

That made her feel a little better, but not by much. Traelyn stared down
at their entwined hands. She could feel the calluses on his palms, could
remember how they felt against the tender skin of her neck, her
cheeks...she could remember the way his fingers felt in her hair, the
sounds he made deep in his throat when he rolled her above him... Shards.
"It was hard to sleep alone."

**It was necessary...** "I guess we've been a little spoiled lately,
haven't we."

A wry smile touched her lips. "Spoiled weyrbrats."

Spoiled little weyrbrats playing a very adult game... "Speaking of
spoiled, I have breakfast and klah for you in the other room."

Traelyn grasped onto that hesitant opening to their usual teasing
conversations like a lifeline. "You spoil me rotten, U'kaiah."

"Some of the sweetest wines come from rotten grapes," he smiled, giving
her hand a gentle squeeze. "Come on now. Let's get you fed."
