"Kiala!" K'sper ran to catch up with the young woman. He had befriended her
shortly after she arrived at the Weyr a few Turns past and developed a quick
friendship with her. After all, the two were close to the same age and had
both been uprooted from Hold life after a Search - though K'sper had
Impressed and Kiala had so far not found her dragon. Still, it was a
friendship that had endured and the brownrider enjoyed visiting her
occasionally and watching her work.

}:They're food.:{ Bentith's voice was surly, though he had found a sunny
spot in which to sleep. His rider's fascination with other creatures was a
puzzle to him, no matter how often it was explained, and K'sper had given up
on trying to make the brown dragon understand.

Kiala looked over her shoulder, then fully turned around once she realized
who it was. "Hello K'sper! It feels like I haven't seen you in ages. How
are you and Bentith doing?" She gave K'sper a quick hug and a light punch
on the arm. "How's the exciting life of a dragon rider?"

"Not nearly as exciting as most people think," was his reply. "There don't
seem to be enough candlemarks in the day to get everything done. How about
you? Have they realized yet that you've almost enough experience to skip
directly to Master Beasthealer?"

"Oh, you know. Same ol', same ol'," Kiala said and rolled her eyes. "Master
Beasthealer huh? Well, as nice as that would be, I'm still holding out for
Impression. Who knows, it could happen. Although, I do have to admit to
myself I'm getting up in the turns and it may not happen." Kiala sighed.
She really wanted to Impress, but she also understood that if it didn't
happen, she had to be prepared and move on with her life.

"There's one out there for you," K'sper reassured her, though he had no idea
why some Impressed and others did not. His own Impression was still a
mystery to him.

}:Who else would I have chosen?:{ asked Bentith.

**Of course,** was the rider's response to the dragon. He smiled at his
friend. "So what are your duties for today?"

"Well, I've gone and check on one of the specific runners who had a swollen
leg, but now I'm on the way to check one that is coming up lame. Would you
care to come with me or do you have other duties you need to take care of?"

"I'd enjoy that," replied K'sper. "I like runners."

}:Do they taste good?:{

**No! I mean - I don't know, and you're not going to find out.** The rider
concentrated on that thought, warning Bentith sternly to stay away before
smiling at his friend. "Lead on."

Kiala continued on her walk to the runner pens. She looked over her
shoulder and, sure that K'sper was following, let him into one of the pens
that housed the injured runner. "Well, you wouldn't be able to tell from
first glance, but the runner here has come up lame on her right front leg,"
Kiala explained, holding up the offending hoof. "The only time you would
notice it would be if she were to be ridden by someone. One of the
Journeymen told me that they're going to rest her and not ride her for a
while and see if that helps. It's been known to happen before," Kiala said.
She let the runner's hoof go so the runner could return it to the floor and
gave it an affectionate slap on the shoulder. "Exciting stuff huh?"

The brownrider reached over to touch the runner, who shied away. He sighed,
remembering how excited he had been whenever he visited the runner pens at
his home Hold and how he had dreamt of being able to care for one of them
some day. "I probably smell too much of dragon to suit her."

"Probably," Kiala replied and shrugged. "It's ok though, I'm sure Bentith
just smells food on you, huh?"

"I hadn't thought of it that way," mused K'sper. "I'd hate to lose an arm
because he was hungry."

}:I'd not do that.:{ insisted the brown dragon.

Kiala laughed. "You know, somehow I don't think a dragon would do that. I
think your attachment is too strong." She started to walk from the pens
back to the weyr. "Hey, I think it's about time for lunch. Want to join
me?"

"Of course!" He took a few long strides to catch up to her. "I never turn
down an offer for a meal."
