With a relaxed sigh, Nialyn shifted, slowly propping her chin up on
Birigundi's chest so she could look down at his face. His eyes were
closed, but she knew he wasn't asleep. His hand was still buried in her
long hair, for one thing. No one could sleep and clench their fingers
that tightly around something at the same time. She smiled, quietly
amused as she leaned down to press a kiss to the hollow of his throat.
"Shards woman," he breathed, a smile creeping across his lips. "Either
you've been practicing, or you were _really_ happy to see me."
"I rather think it's the latter," she murmured, brushing her cheek along
his chest. "I've missed you, Biri."
He almost teasingly pointed out that he'd been there practically every
day. But he knew what she had meant. He had been there as Birigundi the
friend and supporter, but it had been a long time since he had come to her
as her lover. "Shards, Nia, I've missed you too."
A rather pleased grin lifted the corners of her lips at that, and she
blushed. "I could tell..."
He wrapped his long arms around her and held her tightly. It was almost
frightening how much he had missed being with her. Almost. "I won't ever
forget tonight." The dancing... the moonlight in her hair... this
moment... Shards, he was becoming one of those poor saps in the harper
romances, but how could he help it? More and more he was beginning to
understand that someday... someday... Not yet, of course, but...
someday...
"Me neither," she whispered, looking down into his eyes. Shifting her
hips gently against his, she lifted a hand to his hair and ran her fingers
through it. Something had happened between them tonight. Something
subtle. And Nialyn loved the feeling...whatever it was. But how would she
sharding be able to sleep alone after tonight? How would she be able to
deal with the fact that despite tonight, he wouldn't always stay with her
to make love, but would prowl the Weyr for other women? A lump rose
unbidden in her throat. **You've been strong without him before, Nia.
Don't expect anything...you know him... Just enjoy tonight. Just enjoy
it....** Closing her eyes, Nialyn leaned down and kissed him. But it
wasn't her usual, soft kiss. It was harder, maybe even a little
desperate.
"Whoa there," he gently teased when they finally came up for air. "I
thought we still had all night. What's the rush?"
She pressed her lips self-consciously to the side of his neck. "No rush."
He snuggled back into the pillows and curled his arms around her once
more. "When are you picking up Lyndi tomorrow?"
"In the morning," she replied quietly, kissing the dip of his shoulder.
"As early as possible. Do you want to come? I think she'd love to see
you."
"I want to see her too. Maybe we can all go for a walk together. How
does that sound? It would be good for you to get out of the Weyr for a
little while."
A slow smile curved her lips. "I'd like that." As she settled her head
down on his shoulder, an idea suddenly struck her. "Biri?"
"Hmmm?" he hummed contentedly as he closed his eyes.
"Do you...do you still run in the mornings?"
"I do," he nodded lazily.
"Do you think..." She hesitated. "Can I start coming with you? To run?"
Birigundi lifted his head from the pillows and opened one eye to look down
at her. "You want to come with me to run in the mornings?"
Flushing, she nodded, looking anywhere but up into his face. "It's time I
started getting fit again." Not to mention that it was the perfect excuse
to be able to spend more time with him...and for him to perhaps sleep over
more often than he did.
"Do you have any experience running?"
"Not really," she admitted. "Not like you."
"Well, yeah, no one really has as much experience running as I do unless
they're a runner too," he smiled, tickling her nose teasingly with the tip
of a finger. "But we can run together. I can teach you."
Propping herself up on an elbow, Nialyn smiled happily down at him. "I'd
love it, Biri."
He grinned, running a finger along her jaw. Birigundi liked the way her
blue eyes sparkled when she smiled like that. Lyndi certainly had her
mama's beautiful eyes... "Well, if you're going to smile at me like that,
I how could I refuse you?"
She grinned back, blushing a little. "Shall we kiss to seal the deal?"
"Can we seal the deal more than once?" he asked, wiggling his eyebrows
suggestively.
She gently curved a hand around his bare shoulder. "We have all night."
