A Move

Writers: Jane, Roxanne
Date Posted: 1st June 2007

Characters: R'haran, D'wrayt
Description: R'haran asks D'wrayt about the possibility of taking up a new job.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 4, day 13 of Turn 4

"Sir," R'haran said, tapping on the open office door and then stepping
into the room. "May I have a word?"

"Of course R'haran! Come have a seat." D'wrayt replied grinning when he
saw who had stopped by.

"Thanks." The greenrider settled into one of the seats in the
Weyrleader's office. "I have a request to make - and I'll admit now I'm
surprised to be making it."

"You're not wanting to leave Dragonsfall are you?" D'wrayt asked
concerned. He adored R'haran after all the turns they had spent working
together with the weyrlings and would miss the greenrider if he should
leave. He had met the children that had been placed in the man's care.
He was so good with them and the children were adjusting nicely.

"I thought about it," R'haran admitted. "Perhaps asking for a transfer
to a coastal Weyr where the children could be close to the sea again but
I'm not sure they need to get back familiar things right now. No, it's
a move - but not away from here." He took a breath and looked the
Weyrleader in the eye. "I'd like to be the Weyrharper here."

"I think that you'd be a wonderful Weyrharper, R'haran. I'm sure that
Reyina would like that as she's missed having someone to badger about
harpering who will take the time to actually teach her what she wants to
know. I'm afraid that I will lose her to the harper hall if she doesn't
Impress soon." D'wrayt replied with a smile. He knew that the greenrider
had been a harper before Impression and served in that role before the
return of Thread. It was only natural that he want to return to
something that he could do to benefit the Weyr outside of teaching the
weyrlings.

"You don't mind? It's not contributing to the fight against Thread," he
added, voicing the argument he felt the most keenly.

"My friend, you've already done more for that cause than anyone else
ever will come close to. You deserve to take a break and as long as I
don't lose you to another Weyr, I'll agree to anything." he said trying
to be reassuring as the greenrider had risked his life to confirm the
very thing that now consumed their time and energy. This was the least
he could do to repay the man's efforts over the turns.

"You know that music and singing aren't my particular skills," the
greenrider said, making a point to air all the possible negatives in his
appointment. "Administration, mediation, research ... It's not that
I'm _not_ musical and there are some good journey-ranked harpers with
most of the work of the Weyr already under control." He grinned. "I'm
arguing for and against in the same breath and you've already said yes."

"I'm glad to see that you were prepared. I agree that we've plenty of
musically inclined journey-ranked, so perhaps you entice a few over to
the other aspects of being a harper. Does T'mahl know of this yet?"
D'wrayt said with a grin.

"I thought I'd tell him only if you were agreeable."

"Good idea. I'm sure that you would like this effective immediately, am
I right?" he nodded in agreement as the weyrlingstaff had been through
quite a few changes just recently. The Weyr was slowly regaining some
semblance of order after the of unstability and frequent change of
leadership in the recent past.

R'haran nodded. "If possible."

"There's no reason why it can't be done. Consider it offical, Weyrharper
R'haran." D'wrayt replied.

"Thank you, Weyrleader," R'haran said, silently hoping he could live up
to the title.
