Family and Impression

Writers: Allison, Jane
Date Posted: 20th May 2007

Characters: Kiala, R'haran
Description: Kiala and R'haran discuss his family and Impression, among other topics.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 4, day 5 of Turn 4

R'haran found himself walking alongside the apprentice beasthealer as they left the meeting. "Hello, Kiala. How are things amongst the beastcrafters?"

Kiala smiled. "Fairly well. Nothing more than just a scrape here and a strained muscle on one of the runner beasts. Luckily I haven't had to deal with any serious injuries lately. How has Evielenth been?"

"She's good as long as she remembers her limits - which I do for her.
And how is your Candidacy going? Still keen to Stand?"

"Yes, I know I'm reaching the high end of being able to Stand, but I just don't want to give it up. I firmly believe there is a dragonet out there for me. Besides, if I don't make it, at least I can stay here and be a beastcrafter at the Weyr." Kiala glanced over at R'haran. "By the way, I noticed your wee ones down visiting Taia and the pups. Are they eyeing one for themselves?"

"I hope not! He laughed. "I've already inflicted five children on the foster-mother without making it five children and a new puppy. Can you imagine it?"

Kiala laughed along with him. "I think you'd be needing to look for a new foster mother then! At least they're having fun. And they don't really need to have a puppy when we have so many canines running around here. Although, it's nice to have something all to yourself."

"When you're one of five I don't suppose that happens very often. Are you from a big family, Kiala?"

"Actually, not really. I'm the youngest of three children. My brother is a Jr. Journeyman Harper and my sister is married off to one of the minor holders. I got lucky though; my father decided to let me tag along and watch what he did." Kiala smiled. "I have many memories of peeking out behind him and watching him work his craft. He's an amazing person." Kiala glanced over at R'haran. "What about you? Were you from a big family?"

"I was. Until very recently I thought they'd all died in the plague.
It turns out there was a child survivor."

"And that explains the little people running around," Kiala said, grinning. "Don't worry though, they are good kids and don't get into trouble...well, nothing too serious at least!"

"I doubt they've had a chance to get into much in their lives thus far, so a little bit of trouble won't hurt them." He grinned at the beasthealer. "Feel free to tell them off if need be."

Kiala grinned back. "Don't worry, I have no problem telling them off.
And you're right, children do need to get into some trouble or else they wouldn't learn from their mistakes. However, as long as it's not too serious it should be ok. In fact, if they want to come visit me sometime, I'll introduce them to a few of the tamer runners. I think they would like that."

"Thank you. I'll bring them along. I do try to accompany them; saves Sahna - the eldest - being responsible for all the younger ones. Are you enjoying your work? Won't be disappointed to give it up if you Impress?"

"Yes, I enjoy my work, however, I won't be disappointed to give it up if I Impress. I'm glad I have the skills to care for animals though. I'm fairly sure it'll come in handy if I manage to Impress a dragon," Kiala said, smiling.

"Certainly more than having been a harper did," R'haran agreed easily.

"True, but by being a harper, you get to cheer everyone up when Threadfall is getting them down. That's just as important. It would be too dangerous to have riders upset and depressed," Kiala said, thinking of the nights spent in the Lower Caverns enjoying everyone's presence.

"If was any good as that sort of harper, I'd happily take credit for it.
But you're right; every person brings something different to Impression and the dragons don't seem to favour one background over any other."

"Yes, and it's a good thing it doesn't depend on what you do!" Kiala agreed emphatically. "Well, I'd better head off. I need to get down to the holding area and check on one of the runners. Thanks for the conversation though!" Kiala smiled over at R'haran.

"You're welcome." He laughed. "That is one harper skill I seem to have been blessed with."
