Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 3, day 26 of Turn 4
"Just keep up the good work and let us know if you need anything!" Benaren called out his farewell to the head of the loggers who were working the area for the Woodsmith Hall. He had enjoyed a few mugs of ale with the loggers and was in a cheerful mood as he approached the dragon and rider for the trip back to the Hold.
Karemyn stood by Charyoth's side for the Holder. Someone from the loggers camp had been out a candlemark since with food and a small flagon of wine, but she hadn't touched much of either. She watched as the Holder walked towards them, he was smiling, not the sneer he had greeted her with earlier, but she wasn't sure that boded well for either her or Charyoth.
"Ah yes, the lovely greenrider." He winked at her as he approached, pointedly looking her up and down. "You didn't get bored waiting for me, did you?"
"No, I didn't get bored." she assured him, pointedly ignoring his compliment, if that was how it was intended. "You're all finished here, then?" she asked, helping him to mount Charyoth's foreleg. "Did you want to fly straight or would you prefer to return quickly?" *Quickly, _please_ say quickly.**
}:Do I have to take him back?:{ a resigned sigh shook the green from nostrils to tail. }:I s'pose we could always take him /between/ for a moment, that usually sobers them up enough:{
**Oh no you don't. Don't get me started on that again.** Karemyn stifled a laugh, **Obnoxious he may be, but he is in contention for the position of Lord Holder, and I'm sure Lord Benaroy would have something to say about it, if his son suddenly disappeared.**
}:I just meant to sober him, not lose him!:{ Charyoth gave a deep rumble. }:Leaving him their would be all your idea:{ "I'd prefer to take my time," he replied. "I enjoy seeing the lay of the land." He did not add that he also wanted time to sober up a bit before reporting back to his father.
"As you wish. Though its a little cooler now than when we first arrived." she took note of the jacket he was wearing, it might be enough to ward off the cooler air that was beginning to settle.
He buckled the riding straps around himself. "I'm sure I'll find some way to keep warm."
A shudder ran through her as she settled in front of him and began to fasten her own riding straps. "I'm sure you will be fine." she spoke over her shoulder. "But remember, the option is there, a few seconds /between/ and we could be there nearing your warm hearth."
**Why did I give him the option!**
}:Courtesy is inbred in some:{ Charyoth said quietly, }:Unfortunately, not in all:{ "That's not necessary." The last thing he wanted was a trip /between/ -- cold and dark and leaving him gasping, afraid that he would never know light and warmth again. He leaned closer to whisper close to her ear. "You act almost as if you'd like to be rid of me."
"Now why would I want that?" she asked brightly, masking the revulsion she felt.
**Sandsoap! And lots of it!!**
}:If he so much as..:{
**NO! No, just - don't!** Karemyn tried hard to stifle the laughter she felt bubbling inside her. **Leave him to me, I can handle him. And anything you do may reflect badly on Dar and the family.**
}:Oooh - kay:{ She could almost sense the resigned sigh from her lifemate, but she had more important things to consider here. How to put off the Holder, without damaging her mother and fathers living standards.
"You wouldn't, of course," he stated confidently. "So we'll just enjoy this long ride home, just the two of us."
"Three." she corrected. "There're three of us."
He sat back slightly. "Three?"
"Three." she stated firmly. "You, me and _Charyoth_. Three." Did he think her lifemate was no more than a common runner? She felt outrage on the part of her dragon, and wished now, she had stated she had something more to do and needed to return to the Weyr; going /between/ would have been so much easier.
He waved his hand dismissively. "I meant people. There are just the two of us."
"Charyoth may not be _people_ but," *count to ten* Karemyn told herself sternly, "she is all seeing and all knowing, if you know what I mean?"
Benaran chuckled in derision. "_All_ seeing and _all_ knowing? You must be joking."
"She is a part of me." Karemyn reminded him.
Charyoth bugled loudly in confirmation.
"I don't joke when it comes to my dragon. She is an extension of me, body and soul."
He laughed again, this time with a touch of nervousness. "Yes, well, I've never really understood how that works."
"You would have to become a dragonrider to understand. But be assured, there are three of us here." she could sense he was unsure of how further to proceed; and it gave her some confidence that he may now reconsider anything he may have had in mind.
"Doesn't that . . . uh. . . get in the way sometimes? I mean, you have no privacy, do you?"
"If I chose to, I can have privacy." Karemyn shrugged, "The choice is mine, entirely."
He remained silent, considering that. Was she trying to push him away or was this how things were done at the Weyr, one of those slightly to entirely depraved practices of places that housed dragons? Perhaps it was best to remain separate from weyrfolk, as many advocated. "How far are we from the Hold?"
"You'll see it appearing soon, a low glow down to your left. They've put out the glows for your return, I would say."
"Probably," he agreed softly, though he could think of few who would do so from concern for him. "Would you care to join me for a drink when we arrive?" He had decided that he should probably try again with the woman - though without her dragon.
"I appreciate the offer, but I should really get back to the Weyr." Karemyn replied, as Charyoth began her descent. She watched as the glow's left out in the field got closer, and was grateful Charyoth had clearer vision than she did at night.
"A pity," he murmured, though with her refusal he was already planning which woman he would seek out in her place. "Though I will certainly look up your family and let them know that I appreciate your service to me."
His words gave her pause for concern. "Oh..er, thank you." She wasn't sure whether his looking her family up would be a good thing or not? If he ever ended up as Lord Holder, it could mean trouble for her family, if she had displeased him tonight. "But I did no more than any other rider would have done, for you."
"Perhaps - but not all riders have family at Amber Hills Hold."
She gave a small laugh, "That's true." she ruefully admitted. How she hoped her parents weren't in for trouble. "Well, here we are." She needlessly commented, as Charyoth settled onto the ground. "I hope your trip has been a pleasant one," she said, slipping down the side of her dragon, and helping the Holder to dismount.
He paused, his eyes slowly looking her over before returning to her face. "Yes, it was, and I thank you for that. But the invitation remains. If you are ever in the area and wish to meet me for . . . a drink, let me know."
With a small tight smile, Karemyn nodded, "Thank you for the invitation, I'll keep it in mind." She pulled back a little, and began to mount Charyoth's side again, aware of the Holders scrutiny as she did so.
She hadn't missed the covetous look he had given her body, and hoped that she wouldn't have to repeat this duty again; she would make a request to that end when she returned to the Weyr. Maybe she could suggest that in future only male riders - and big ones at that - be sent to transport the Holder.
He watched her mount, thinking that it was too bad that she had not accepted his offer. However, he could easily find another and simply fantasize about the dragonrider while with the other woman - without the complication of a dragon. "Farewell, and again, my thanks." With that he turned to the Hold, determined to jot down his notes as quickly as possible and then to find a partner who would say yes.
