Description: N'call meets Karri and gets the first "date" he's had in a while.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 3, day 9 of Turn 4
He looked across the table to see a young girl with a scar not unlike his own on her face seat herself.
"Hi there. I don't think I've met you before. And trust me I've met most of the weyr's prettiest women."
**Not that any would do more than talk to me...**
Karri could only half hide her grin as she dropped her eyes to her plate and blushed slightly at the surprise compliment. "I'm Karri." she said, peeking up at him.
She knew she wasn't pretty, and wondered if he hadn't seen her scarred face yet. Maybe her hair was hiding it again?
**So far so good...** "I'm N'call, it's a pleasure to meet you Karri."
"You too." she automatically replied with a smile. She straightened up, her shyness evaporating with the exchange of names, and took a moment to look him over.
He was young, but older than her, twenty maybe? And he wasn't bad looking, the oh so common thread scar on his face not diminishing his looks. "How long have you been here Karri? I haven't seen you around the Dining Hall." **Just stop there. Don't throw yourself on her. You don't need sex _everytime_ and she looks so young.** N'call grinned back at her, not even noticing the scar.
"I kind of get lost in the crowd." Karri waved it off, "I graduated a couple months ago, and you?"
"Been here my whole life." He grinned. "Well accept for about three years at the Harper Hall where I earned my knots." He nodded toward his shoulder. "And then of course I accidently Impressed..." He let his sentence trail off, hoping she'd ask him to tell her. It was his favorite story.
}:Mine too.:{ Haloth told his rider sleepily.
She looked at him with interest, "accidentilly impressed? How did that happen?" "Its quite the tale. I'd come home just after getting my journeyman's knots to see the Hatching and visit my fmaily. I was in the Stands, watching, and was so hung up on who Impressed who, that I didn't notice little Haloth trying gallantly to make his way up the stairs to me. It was my sister who pointed out the little bronze idiot who wouldn't give up on getting my attention." N'call smiled as he related the story, sending love to his big bronze, who returned it.
"Why weren't you on the sands?" Karri wondered, if he was of age, most people jumped at the chance of standing, "You didn't want to be a dragonrider?" "It had never been my plans. I'd dreamed of it, just as I'm sure every little boy does. But I was happy being a harper." He grinned. "When Haloth found me that day it changed my life, and not in the normal way. We knew Thread was coming back so I couldn't exactly go for my Mastery. I was needed in the wings." He grimaced at the lost oppertunity. Karri reached over and patted his hand. "The pass won't last forever." she said, trying to be helpful. "You could still make Master one day."
'But then the question becomes, would it be worth it? Would it be worth it to become a Master that late in life? I'll be well into my seventh decade by the time the Pass is over and then I still have a _lot_ of training ahead of me. I'm only a Junior Journeyman." N'call sighed. "But listen to me complain aobut my problems. what's new in the life of Karri?"
Karri laughed and shook her head at his dismissal and sudden change in topic. "You're strange you know that?"
"Oh I know it. I'm told every chance I get. 'You're too nice,' or 'you're not my type,' or my favorite, 'its not you, its me.'" His voice sounded just like the girls who had said them, his eyes alight with glee.
She covered her mouth with her hand as she giggled. "Oh they don't! That sounds just like out of a harper's novel! They could at least try something a bit more original." "Oh they have. One girl even went so far as to transfer so she wouldn't have to turn me down." N'call grinned to show it was an old hurt. "I've also gotten letters, and had women who've had their _dragons_ break up with me." He sighed a bit. "But why am I talking about _my_ breakups. It's just like me to tell you how many times I've been rejected. I bet you wouln't want anything to do with me huh?" He flashed her his best bronzerider smile, though it had a touch more sincerity than most.
If it hadn't been for the horrible way Y'nub had treated Teseada, she might not be as wary of bronzerider smiles, and he had a sort of oddness about him that she didn't really mind... "I don't think so, sorry." Karri said firmly, then added with a smile, "but I'd be happy to be your table companion again if we happen to dine at the same time." He gave her a fake pout for a moment. Jutting out his lower lip in a commical fashion. Then he grinned. "I'll take what I can get. Why don't I catch you at lunch tomorrow?" Karri couldn't help but laugh, "I won't promise anything, but I'll try."
"Then its a date." He winked and walked away taking his tray with him.
