Something New

Writers: Roxanne, Yvonne
Date Posted: 26th March 2007

Characters: J'nus, D'wrayt
Description: J'nus is relieved of his position as Cyan's Wingleader, and given a new set of knots to replace his old ones
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 2, day 1 of Turn 4

D'wrayt had called J'nus into his office so that he could break the news to the bronzerider that he had given U'kaiah control of Cyan again. He had been wondering if J'nus would want to be his Wingsecond as he had yet to find a replacement for E'liah who transferred back North to be with his sick mother.

While he waited for the Wingleader, he worked on a few reports that he had been procrastinating on the last few days. He just didn't care for writing reports on such boring topics like these or any reports really, but he knew it was part of the job description.

J'nus knocked on the door a short while later and smiled at the Weyrleader when he was asked to enter. He already had a pretty good guess about why he'd been summoned. "Good afternoon, D'wrayt."

"Good afternoon, J'nus. I'm sure you've heard about U'kaiah receiving his Wingleader's knots back by now. There's not much that doesn't stay a secret for long in this place." D'wrayt replied as he himself had heard whispers of such from the dragons themselves. It wasn't like he had asked the bronzerider to keep the news to himself after all and J'nus had to know it was only a temporary assignment.

Knowing it was a temporary assignment didn't lessen the sting to the ego, however. The bronzerider smiled. "I had a pretty good idea that he had. I'll vacate the office within the next day or two."

"That's fine. I was wondering if you'd like to fill a vacancy in my Wing?"

D'wrayt didn't have a Wingsecond. J'nus wasn't going to second-guess him, though. "Your Wing, sir?"

"Yes, I have a need for a good Wingsecond and would love for you to fill it for me. What do you say?" D'wrayt replied with a grin.

J'nus grinned back. "I'd be a fool to say no, sir. Thank you for thinking of me."

"You've led Cyan well and I wanted to put you in a position where your talent won't be wasted. I shall see you at the next drill, then Wingsecond." D'wrayt said honestly. He had admired the way J'nus had handled Cyan and wanted to reward him.

"Thank you. I'll do the best I can, although to be honest I don't know Azure Wing's formations that well." He'd been flying in Cyan for turns- it would take time to learn the rhythm of a new Wing. "Do you have any Wing formation hides handy that I could borrow?"

"Sure but you'll see that they're hardly different from Cyan's.
Having similar patterns makes it easier to move riders around if necessary." he replied pulling out the standard packet of formations that he kept for new riders and handing it to the bronzerider.

"Even so." It never hurt to be thorough. The bronzerider glanced through the hides, then rolled them up and stood. "Thank you again, Weyrleader. I'll see you tomorrow morning."

"You're welcome. I'm really looking forward to working with you." D'wrayt said as he stood up to shake the bronzerider's hand. He hoped that he could keep his Weyr fully staffed for awhile with competent riders. It was not a pleasant experience to have to change staff as frequently as they have for whatever reason.
