Gleniel was restless. Every time she shifted, turned, sighed, cuddled, Kiomo could feel it. He felt her arm slip around his middle once more as she rested her forehead against the back of his shoulder. Having been woken yet again, Kiomo sighed as he carefully turned in her arms to face her. He slid his arm gently under her head and pulled her close.
"What's wrong, Glen? You're rolling around like a trundle bug tonight."

"I'm sorry," she whispered, curling tighter against him even as she hid her face in his shoulder, ashamed. "I didn't mean to wake you up."

"You can't sleep?" he asked softly, brushing the hairs the hid her face back.

Gleniel shook her head. "Not really." But she had been trying, really she had! She just couldn't get her thoughts to slow down--thoughts concerning Kiomo. What if Lord Ishek pronounced him guilty after all?
He'd be forced to marry that dreadful, lying chit of a woman and Gleniel would never be able to see him again!

Kiomo could almost read the thoughts running through her head as he kissed her softly. "No one can take you away from me," he whispered against her lips.

"Lord Ishek can. And he will, Kiomo, if he doesn't believe."

"No," Kiomo declared softly, a note of steel in his voice. "No man can ever take you from me."

Looking away, she whispered softly, "I want to believe you."

He gently tilted her face so she would look into his eyes. "Believe me," he whispered. His lips found hers, at first tender, then almost possessively as he pulled her hard against him.

Try as she might, Gleniel couldn't banish the thought--that terrifying "what if". She just couldn't. And the feeling of anxious helplessness made her desperate. Her arms came up around him, hands tightening in his soft hair, molding her body against his. Gleniel had told herself once that she would never give her heart so easily to any man. But she _had_
given it away, and to a man who could be taken from her with the snap of Lord Ishek's fingers. Closing her eyes against the stinging tears that threatened, she kissed him harder.

Pulling back breathlessly at last Kiomo brushed her nose with his. "No matter what happens tomorrow, Glen, we will find a way to be together."

"Even if you have to...to marry her?"

"There are... ways we could still be together," he replied softly, reaching for her hand. "It's not the ideal. And I certainly would understand if you... decided it would not work for you... But don't think about that now. I will be cleared of these charges. I promise you."

Gleniel ran her fingers through his hair. "Will you come find me as soon as it's all...over?" she asked quietly.

"I will," he nodded. "And I'll have good news for you."
