Iadell curtsied as she entered the room. "Thank you for taking the time to meet with me, Steward Cyrek."
"You're welcome. Please, have a seat." Cyrek gestured to the chairs that sat facing his desk, and remained standing until the older woman settled herself. "What can I do for you, Iadell?"
"I was wondering if you'd heard anything from Fellia's relatives yet?" She folded her hands in her lap to keep them from fussing at the hem of her shirt.
Cyrek shook his head. "Nothing yet. I'll call you when I have heard something. Sometimes it takes a while for family members to make difficult decisions, such as whether or not they can afford to take in an extra child, and I'm of the tendency to think that the longer a response takes, the more likely it is that her uncle won't want her."
Iadell nodded, trying to suppress a sigh. The girl should be with her family, but... "If they don't want to take her, I'd like to adopt Fellia."
The Steward smiled, albeit a little sadly. It was amazing how well the former residents of Amethyst Cliff Hold were pulling together and supporting one another. Iadell wasn't a young woman any more. "I cannot commit to anything until I hear word from her family, but I see no reason why the girl can't stay with you. How is she adjusting?"
"She's doing better. She's playing more with the other children, and the nightmares don't seem as bad," Iadell said.
"That's good to hear." Cyrek hesitated, then asked, "And you?"
"I'm . . . finding things to do." Although the various things she did to help out felt useful, it still seemed like a way to just keep busy
-- something that only distracted her from the gaping hole in her life.
The Steward nodded, letting his gaze drop back to the hides before him. Everyone was still 'finding things to do' to a certain extent.
He, himself, wasn't sure that he'd ever be able to come to terms with the loss of his Hold. "I'll let you know the moment I hear something about Fellia, Iadell."
"Thank you so much, Steward Cyrek," Iadell said. She hoped word would come soon.
"You're welcome." He hesitated, then added, "Those of us from Amethyst Cliff Hold need to stick together."
Iadell nodded, smiling at him. "And we're lucky to have you helping us."
"Well, I do what I can," Cyrek said, pleased. He had accepted Stewardship of Amber Hills Hold mainly for his daughter's benefit, but it had also put him in position to make sure that Amethyst Cliff's people were taken care of. Without a Lord Holder to protect their interests, their welfare had become his business. He'd done his best, finding cots and foster families, dividing resources and dealing with other Holds for goods that they needed and might not be able to obtain on their own... and he kept the Hold's past in hopes that someday the tapestries, paintings, and what Hold records he'd salvaged would one day be needed again...
Iadell stood and curtsied. "Thank you again, Steward Cyrek."
