Notes: Birigundi comes to Rigella in her hour of need
Birigundi was still re-buttoning the last button on his shirt when he arrived outside Rigella's door. After final adjustments to his shirt, hoping he didn't look like he had just left Nia's bed to come running to find her, he carefully knocked on the journeyman's door. "Rigella," he called softly as he peeked his head inside.
"Get in," Rigella called, trying hard not to sound like she was sobbing.
She was curled into a fetal position in her bed, hands wrapped protectively around her belly.
Just the sound of her voice told him something was wrong, but the sight of her almost scared him. "Oh shards! Rigella?" He rushed to her side, unsure what to do. "Rigella, what's wrong?"
"I'm having stomach pains," she said with quiet voice. Fellis landed and wrapped her around her neck.
"What? But... What kind of stomach pains?" A small chill gripped at his heart. Was there something wrong? With the baby? She was a healer, she should know!
"Just..pain. I don't know, it could be anything, from indigestion, the uterus growing and taking room from other organs to..." she didn't have to finish her sentence, her face told clearly what she was thinking.
Miscarriage. It would be so ironic, that just when she had gotten used to the idea she was pregnant, going to have a baby, be a mother, she would lose it. The curse of healer training was that she knew what could wrong and even mildest symptoms easily became omens of doom. (Especially in hormone-loaded mind.)
"Well, should we get you to the infirmary?" Birigundi asked, feeling almost an edge of panic. She wasn't loosing the baby, was she? He didn't remember this happening with Nia! Something must be going wrong!
Rigella shook her head. "At this stage of pregnancy there really isn't anything you can do. I'm not bleeding, which is good sign. Yet anyway."
"There has to be something they could do for you though," he insisted.
"Maybe there's some medicine you can take that will protect the baby, or at least they can tell you why you have the pain. Maybe its not the baby at all."
"All right," Rigella agreed. He was probably right, she was just an apprentice and self diagnosis wasn't easy.
Birigundi helped her into a sitting position. "Come on, I'll stay with you until we can figure out what's going on," he promised, Nia forgotten in the face of this new crisis.
"Don't leave me alone, I'm scared," Rigella whispered.
"I won't. I swear to you I won't," Birigundi said as he helped her to her feet. He put an arm protectively around her. "Let's get some help."
Rigella leaned against him and took a comfort from his strength of arm.
