Kiomo grabbed his brown tunic from out his closet and folded it neatly.
Glancing over at the young woman who had slipped into his bedroom unnoticed, he gave her an apologetic smile. "Don't worry, I'll take some food with me."
Stifling a small sigh of resignation, Gleniel took a seat on his sofa. "When will you be back, Kiomo?"
"Tomorrow, hopefully." Just in case, he had left a message for Ishek telling him where he was going and why. "Penryn used his connections at Sapphire Meadows and found me some solid leads. Hopefully one will lead to someone who can help me out of this mess."
"She and her family are so awful for blaming you. I hope this trip will help uncover the sharding truth!"
"It will," he says as he stuffed his tunic in his bag. "It _has_ to."
Rising to her feet, Gleniel came over and wrapped her arms around him from behind, pressing her cheek against his shoulder. She didn't like hearing that tone in his voice. Her arms tightened briefly as her eyes closed.
Kiomo reached up to cover her arms with his. "Don't worry, Glen. This will all get sorted out. Don't worry about me."
"But I care," she murmured. "So of course I worry, Kiomo. Of course I do..."
He turned around in her arms and pulled her close. "Be careful who you care for, Glen. If I can't find a way to prove my innocence..."
Something akin to panic flashed in her eyes. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Just that... well, don't get your hopes up. This is something that's hard to prove, and if Ishek decides I'm guilty... I'd have to marry her."
"No." She looked away, swallowing thickly. "No, no..."
"I just think you should be prepared, Gleniel. In case the worst should happen," he said gently. "And this may not be the only time something like this would happen. If someone of high rank accuses me of something like this... This is like I told you before, there are certain obligations a Lord Holder's son must live up to."
"Scorch her," she whispered, anxious fear growing in her heart. "Scorch her for doing this to you."
He reached out for her. "If there is any proof at all to be found at Sapphire Meadows, I _will_ find it."
Gleniel kissed him with an almost wild desperation. He _had_ to find proof! He just had to! She couldn't imagine him gone, leaving her with nothing but wistful memories and a faint whisper of what might have been between them. Her hold tightened on him. She couldn't imagine facing the evenings alone.
Pulling back, Kiomo looked down at her, smoothing her hair back from her face. "Calm down, Glen. I'm not going to stop seeing you, no matter what happens."
Her green eyes were huge as she gazed up at him. "But...if..." She clamped her jaw shut, not even allowing herself to complete that thought. He _would_ find proof!
Kissing her one last time he released her. "I have to finish packing.
There'll be a dragonrider coming to get me soon."
Swallowing thickly, Gleniel nodded, feeling numb. He would...still see her? Even if he had to wed that woman? The thought terrified her.
Relieved her. Oh shards...she didn't want him to be put in such a position!
Reaching down, she lifted one of his tunics and handed it to him, meeting his eyes briefly. His innocence would prevail. It had to.
