S'rak gave a quick rap on Corvera's door. Radeth had said she was in her Weyr and he had sworn his dragon to secrecy in order to surprise his friend with a picnic.
Corvera opened the door in a bathing robe with her wet hair hanging thickly around her shoulders; as soon as she saw S'rak she gasped, with wide eyes and hid behind the door.
"S'rak!" She yelled from her hiding place. "What are you doing?!"
He grinned at her show of modesty, he'd seen her in much less than a bath robe before. "Why I come bearing gifts my girl! A basket full of goodies so that I can wisk you away for a picnic."
"Well there will be no wishking for a good half candlemark!" She remained behind the door.
He groaned, "Half a--! Well are you at least going to let me in if I must wait for you to make yourself even _more_ beautiful?" He didn't bother to argue the time it took for a gal to get dressed, he had learned from Torinica, his previous weyrmate, that it took as long as it took. Corvera sighed. She wasn't anxious to be seen getting caught up in a love affair so early into her tenure as Weyrwoman - she had always been schooled by older goldriders to remain appropriately private and composed, but S'rak had gone through the effort of surprising her. "All right. Just wait a few moments before coming in so that I can dart into the bathing chambers!"
Silently laughing at her sudden holder-like sensibilities, he waited (as told) long enough for her to hide and then went inside. He had already strapped the blankets and such for the picnic on Radeth, but he had brought the basket and food with him so he sat it down on the table by the couch and had a seat. "I'd pour us some wine while I'm waiting, but I'd much rather do it on a nice sandy beach!" He called to her. "Well then I'll hurry!" And, as promised, she appeared after only a few minutes, twisting her wet hair and pinning it in place. She looked a little uncomfortable to have wet hair in public, but she didn't say anything. "Whisk me away." She smiled.
If she was any other girl, he'd have thought that a good time to sweep her off her feet and carry her to the dragons, but he figured with the 'proper' type mood she was in today she might not be aminable. Instead he gave her a formal bow and offered her his arm. Hearing Radeth land next to the queen he grinned, "I do believe our rides await us!" It wasn't long before the pair of dragonriders were seated on a cliff overlooking the sea somewhere closeby the weyr with the picnic basket -
and a bottle of old wine - open. With a glass in her hand to loosen her up, Corvera was beginning to enjoy herself.
"I'm glad you took me out today." She said simply.
"I'm glad you _let_ me take you out today." And he was. It had been too long since he had gotten out of the weyr for anything but practical reasons. It reminded him of another picnic he'd attended with Corvera, back when he was with Torinica at Far Island. "Do you remember M'pal's picnic a few turns ago?" he said, a smile stretching across his face, "when he gathered us all up for that picnic on the beach. Only, he'd placed it too close to the water and the tide washed it all away while we were swimming!" Covera laughed. The brownrider had been so upset - he had worked so hard on that day and his face was priceless when they discovered what had happened. "Well let's hope nothing like that happens to us while we're swimming!" She got up and began walking toward the water invitingly.
S'rak was only more than happy to watch the lithe woman walk away from him, it afforded quite a view. A shadow crossed overhead and he saw Radeth as he plunged into the waves, obviously trying to show off for the queen. Not wanting to miss out on all the fun, S'rak got up and raced after Corvera. As soon as she saw S'rak running, Corvera assumed he was running for her and instantly she took off for the water as well. Somehow she managed to forget about her role as Weyrwoman and really enjoyed herself. She got about thigh deep in water before S'rak caught up with her and she was nervous to see the result.
He, of course, tackled her; pulling her close to his chest and turning slightly to that the force of the water would be on him and not her.
He released her almost immediately, not wanting to drown her, and used her moment of reorientation to take a few strokes away so she couldn't retaliate.
Corvera came up gasping. "Oh!" She wiped the water from her eyes with force. "You're going to get it now!" She started toward him, but didn't get more than a few steps before crying out in pain and alarm. "Ah! I -
I think something bit me!"
S'rak swam to her as quickly as he could and tried to help her out of the water. "Are you okay?" he asked concerned. He couldn't see anything yet through the water, but he knew of some nasty things that could have attacked her. "It's my ankle! I'm not sure what it was, but it had nasty little teeth!" She lifted her leg out of the water and inspected the small bite, already ringed with blood and stinging from the salt of the sea water. "There aren't any poisonous creatures around here are there?"
"Not many," he said somewhat distracted as Radeth charged out of the water beside them. "We should probably get you to the healers though just in case." His first thought was to grab the picnic blanket, wrap Corvera up in it to shield her wet body from the cold, throw her up on Radeth and fly her back to the Weyr. He settled on a modified version as he got his focus back. "Radeth doesn't have his flying straps on, would Mnaiath mind taking both of us back to the Weyr?" "No, that's fine." Her brow wrinkled uncharacteristically in pain.
"Let's just get there!"
