Figol couldn't believe it. He hadn't even _started_ that fight, Brenson had, but here he was going down to the archivists room _again_.
People were going to start to think that he was choosing that for a specialty, what with all the time he spent down there. Distracted and head down, he didn't see the woman before he had run into her. "Oh, sorry. I didn't see you there." Maurgen tossed her hand out in time to keep herself from going into the wall, but still stumbled a few steps. Still, she _had_ been the one standing in the middle of the hallway not paying attention. "I guess I didn't see you, either."
"Huh," he said more to himself than to her as he looked her over. She was a Harper but not from the Hall, and that made him curious. "Are you lost?" He really hoped she was...
She smiled. "Not really lost, I guess. I was just looking around. I didn't think anyone would mind."
"Oh," he said disappointed, then he got an idea. "I could give you a tour if you're interested," The archivists didn't know when he left, "I know everything about this place." "Really? Are you sure you have time?" If he'd been a little closer to her own age, she might have expected ulterior motives. But he was still an apprentice--and he wasn't weyrbred. She doubted he was going to try to lure her off into any secret corners. At least--she _hoped_ he wasn't. He paused a moment, deciding that a half truth was better than a full lie, "I don't have a class to be in right now."
Entirely too trusting, Maurgen smiled. "Well, then I'd really like to see the Hall."
"Okay, this way then." Figol lead the way down the hall. He knew he would have to omit a few key places or risk being discovered, but he figured he could hit the highlights safe enough. "So... you're not from the Hall..."
"No," she replied in a slightly amused voice. "I don't think they would have let me in when I apprenticed."
So she's not the sort to just blather off, he could appreciate that. "So you're from the Weyr?"
"Well, not really. I was Searched, but one of the artists lured me into the craft. Have you met Master Fortien?"
Figol shook his head, "I don't think so, he must not teach at the hall cause I know pretty much everyone." "Oh, no. He's been at the Weyr for turns and turns." Though she'd best not let him catch her calling him old! "He doesn't teach a lot these days. He mostly does large commissions."
"He composes?" Figol asked in awe. It was one of his secret passions, but he didn't think he was very good at it. "Oh, no." Maurgen grinned. "He's an artist. A painter. That's what I want to be." Figol lost interest almost instantly. He had no talent for drawing, a journeyman his first turn at the Hall had made him sure was aware of that.
Maurgen being an artist too made her less interesting to him as well.
"Huh..." he managed to say, deciding that guiding her around wasn't really worth getting in trouble for anymore. "You know, I just remembered, I was supposed to head over to the archive room. Is there someplace in particular I can take you?" Maurgen's grin faded. So, he was one of _those_ apprentices. "No," she replied somewhat coolly. "I think I can find my way to where I need to be."
He didn't notice her change of tone as he was already formulating an excuse for being so late. "Great, well I'll see you around then!" he called as he darted down the hall not giving her a second thought. Sighing, Maurgen turned and headed back in the direction they'd come from.
It wouldn't be the first time a fellow harper found her less interesting when they learned she had little interest in the more common harper disciplines. But at least the boy hadn't dismissed her straight off for being a female crafter, so she supposed it was progress. Of a sort.
