This wasn’t right. This wasn’t right at _all_. A'yan stared, a little bit forlornly at the branching tunnels. He was so _lost_.
Was this what he got for taking advantage of Nhaliviath being asleep to try and explore? She _hated_ the idea of her rider being outside of her view, and he hadn't had much time to himself.
A long exhale. "... I'm sorry. I _am_ trying." He mumbled, mostly to himself and half to the sleeping Nhaliviath. "You... you're just... so _much_."
"Who's so much?" K'mai asked with a touch of humor.
A'yan leaped like a startled feline, let out a yelp as he spun around. "I... No one at all, sir!" He blurted, hastily, and drew up a smile. His gaze flicked to their knots. This was a bluerider!
"I'm green weyrling A'yan, sir. Pleased to meet you." He offered, and added a salute for good measure.
"K'mai, of blue Sebeth. A pleasure to meet you, too." He smiled warmly. "Were you talking to your dragon?"
"... Pleased to meet you sir!" A;yan repeated, to give himself time to think of anything else to say. "I... No sir. I mean, sort of? She's asleep." He added hastily.
"What's her name?"
"... Ah. Right." A'yan turned red. Well... redder. "Her name is Nhaliviath."
"That's a pretty name. I'd like to meet her sometime," K'mai said. "Where were you headed?"
"She is very pretty." A'yan agreed. "And also very hungry, when she is awake." And bossy, and so many other things.
He paused, then rallied. "Of course you may meet her, when she's interested in such a thing! And... And I _was_ trying to find the alternative route to the Dining Hall from the tunnels, R'zen _said_ there was one." He added, though his shoulders slumped a little bit. "Though... he said the same to O'rock, and I am starting to think it was a lie."
K'mai huffed a laugh. "Why wouldn't you just go straight there? The other way is from the infirmary entrance way back there." He pointed behind them.
A'yan wilted a little bit more. "I... have been very busy with training." He offered. "I don't know my way around well yet, and... she does not like me going far when she's awake. I'm not... from here."
"Well, welcome to Dragonsfall! I'd be happy to show you around. Let's get you to the Dining Cavern first." K'mai led the way back down the tunnel.
"_Thank_ you." A'yan told him sincerely, and meant it. "I apologize if you were going somewhere else."
"I don't have _too_ long to show you around right now," K'mai admitted. "But I love meeting new people. Where are you from?"
"Hidden Meadows Hold, sir." A'yan responded, promptly. "If you don’t have time, that's fine. I can find my way back to the Barracks, probably. You're probably very busy, being a full rider."
"Not so busy I can't show a weyrling around." They reached an intersection and K'mai turned into a wider tunnel. "Did your family come to the Hatching?"
A'yan followed, offered a cheery sort of smile that he didn't feel. "Oh I'm fairly certain they were busy. You know how it is, letters do get lost sometimes." He responded lightly. "One of my Harper teachers came!"
"That's great!" K'mai hesitated before asking, "Would you like your family to come visit?"
"Oh, I'm sure they're too busy." A'yan waved a hand. "I'm not the youngest, and besides, I'm busy every moment. Dragons, you know."
K'mai wondered if A'yan really wasn't bothered or if there was some reason he _didn't_ want his family to visit. "Well, if you change your mind, I'm sure I can arrange something."
"Thank you, sir." A'yan responded easily. "But there really is no need. They're likely busy, as I said. Who knows if they even truly realized I'm gone?" He quipped.
Oh shards. "I'm sure you'll make lots of friends here," K'mai said as the noise ahead of them increased. He turned the next corner. "And there we are, the side entrance to the dining cavern." At the end of the long, wide corridor was the hustle and bustle of the dining cavern.
"I _have_ made one friend. I think." A'yan offered. "Perhaps two? Some of the other Weyrlings are very nice." He tried a smile. "Ah... here we are. My apologies for taking up your time, sir. I will not keep you further."
"Really, it was no trouble. If you see me in here later, feel free to come say hi. I can introduce you to people." K'mai wanted to make sure A'yan felt welcome at the Weyr, since it seemed his family situation was less than ideal.
A'yan nodded, once more, and then started to head off. "Thank you again, sir."
