“This is _stupid_.” R’zen complained, half to himself, even as he sulked into the Infirmary. Just because he was trying to get ahead and do more training, with heavier items, he’d been ordered to come here and get checked out?
He could feel Ibranth’s irritation as well, seeping into his own, muddying it. They could be out there doing _more_.
It had been a pleasantly quiet day in the Infirmary and R’zen wasn’t left to wait very long. “R’zen?” Alyndra glanced at the chalk board on the wall for the next name. “Why don’t you come in and tell me what’s wrong,” she gestured towards a waiting exam area. The Weyrhealer liked taking the easy walk-in patients some times, it helped keep her flexible and humble.
R’zen opened his mouth. Thought of the lecture he'd probably get. Closed it.
“That's my name.” He muttered instead, but slouched into the exam area obediently, still scowling. “I'm _fine_.” He muttered. “Got my stitches out ages ago. The Weyrlingmasters just told me to come here cause they caught me trying to do extra weights and stuff. I don't see why it's that big a deal.”
Alyndra’s sharp eyes watched the young man as he opened the door to move past her, “It looks like you’re favoring your arm. Is it more of a dull aching feeling, or a sharp one? Did it come on suddenly, or gradually?” It hadn’t been serious enough that T’lonas had warned her he was sending a weyrling down, so she assumed there hadn’t been any major accident. This wasn’t the first and certainly wouldn’t be the last weyrling to show up in the Infirmary with some training related strain or another.
R'zen bristled. “I'm _fine_.” He insisted, then exhaled slowly. If it got worse and that daft O'rock tried to _help_…
“S'more of a dull aching.” He muttered.
“Alright, I want you to hold it out like this.” Alyndra demonstrated a few gestures she wanted him to make, “And move it around like this?” Nodding, she reached out, running her hands over his injured arm. “Were you doing something specific when it started hurting? Do you think you pulled something?”
R’zen glowered at her all the more, very clearly reluctant to comply. But he obeyed. She ranked him, and he wasn’t going to get in trouble for doing something stupid.
“They sent me up here just cause they caught me trying to get more training in.” He complained. “I don’t see how it’s that big a deal. So what if the sack is a little heavier than it’s supposed to be? If O’rock and the others can handle it, so can I.”
“They sent you up here because you injured yourself,” Alyndra corrected sternly. “Your weyrlingmaster wouldn't have wasted my time otherwise. Everything seems to be moving, so I don't think anything is torn or broken.” She started writing out a note, “I’m going to put you in two days light duty. If anything gets worse or the ache hasn't gone away by then, you're to return to the Infirmary for another examination. That arm is probably weaker than the other because you were on light duty for the stitches. You need to work back up to full use. I'll have Valeriath tell your weyrlingmaster about this, so you won't need to do it yourself.” Mostly, she didn't trust him to do so. All Weyrlings were stupid. The younger, the stupider.
“What? No!” R'zen bristled anew, tried to protest. “I just have to keep going, I can handle it! Wait, just… hang on. How am I supposed to get stronger if I'm stuck standing around?”
“After two days, you can go back to the exercise schedule all Weyrlings are supposed to be following,” Alyndra said patiently. “It's designed to help you get stronger without causing muscle strain. Now. Is there anything else you need checked over today?”
R'zen scowled visibly, crossed his arms. But he looked away. “... No.” He muttered. “I'm _fine_.”
“Then you’re dismissed. I'll make sure T’lonas knows how cooperative you were,” Alyndra said in bland warning. “Here's your note to take back to the Weyrling staff.”
