Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 2, day 16 of Turn 13
To say that these last two sevendays had been something of a whirlwind would... probably have been something of an understatement. R'zen had spent what felt like every waking moment feeding Ibranth, or washing him, or oiling that magnificent hide, all with the lingering aches where Ibranth had left scratches and bruises. He hoped at least the ones on his arm would scar.
**Hah. He'd made an Impression.** R'zen thought, and snickered to himself as he made his way out of the Barracks and toward the Dining Hall. It was _fine_, he was allowed out now, they'd _said_ so. And Ibranth was sound asleep, he could feel it. He'd come back the moment Ibranth stirred.
"Watch it!" He snapped, half reflexive, when someone crossed his field of view. Then looked up, registered the knots of... another bluerider? Not anyone he knew. Not that he knew really anyone past the other weyrlings, really.
He took a step back, deliberately took a deep breath. ".... Sorry. Sir." There.
K'mai arched an eyebrow. "A little short on sleep there, weyrling?"
"I'm _fine_--" R'zen responded, or started to, then took another careful breath. This was a _rider_. He had to be polite.
"A... little bit, sir." He said instead. "... But I'm allowed to explore the Weyr as long as Ibranth’s asleep." A long moment, and then he added, "... Sorry."
He wasn't going to get in trouble on his _first_ exploration.
K'mai considered him for a moment. "Why don't we start over? I'm K'mai, of blue Sebeth."
"... R'zen." R'zen muttered, the tips of his ears red, but he stuck out a hand. "I'm... R'zen. Blue Ibranth’s my dragon." He added, pride slowly returning. "He's awesome. Biggest blue in the whole class."
So what if Ibranth had knocked him over in front of the whole Weyr? He'd known exactly who he wanted.
"Well met, R'zen." K'mai smiled at his bragging. "Biggest blue, huh? Oh hey, were you the one that got knocked over?"
... And there went the wind from R'zen's proverbial sails. He bristled just a little, eyes narrowed and shoulders hunched defensively. "He knew I was his." He responded, after a moment. "And I'm fine now."
This kid sure was defensive. "I didn't mean anything by it. Some of them get really eager to find their rider, that's all. Congratulations on your Impression."
"He... did tackle me." R'zen admitted, after a moment. "But... he didn't mean anything by it. Or sitting on me. Or knocking me over again." He exhaled, and made a face. "He's just... enthusiastic."
A pause, and then he added, "... Thanks."
"So where are you from?" K'mai asked. Not weyrbred, or at least not from Dragonsfall. K'mai was at least passingly familiar with the Candidates who'd been here more than a few months.
"Amber Hills Hold." R'zen responded promptly. "I like the Weyr better though. And not just 'cause of Ibranth." He added. "You do things _way_ different than the Hold." He paused, and then added grudging, "... Baby dragons are a lot. I was gonna go eat while he was asleep still. Are you going that way?"
"Yeah. I was going to eat with my Wing. Do you want to join me?" K'mai offered.
R'zen blinked, then straightened. An introduction to a Wing? _Already_? There was no _way_ he was going to pass that up.
"Yes, sir!" He responded. Ibranth was sound asleep. He had time.
K'mai led the way to the food line first. "You're lucky, you know. Blues are the best."
R'zen trotted at his heels, readily enough. "Of course I'm lucky." He asserted, lifted his chin just slightly. "But I'm sure if it hadn't been Ibranth, it would have been another dragon." He added blithely. "Ibranth’s the _best_. He's amazing. He's already the biggest blue in our class."
"You did mention that," K'mai said with amusement. "I'm glad you found your way here from Amber Hills. Did your family come for the Hatching?"
"Yeah." R'zen responded. "I didn't see them long though." A shrug. "After I got Ibranth all fed and settled, and the teachers made me go to the Healers, the Hatching party was already going." He added. "All my sisters cared about was gawking at dragonriders anyway."
"Ah, a time-honored pass time." K'mai reached the front of the line and started filling his plate. "I hope you weren't hurt too bad."
"Oh I'm fine." R'zen huffed as he followed K'mai into line, loaded up his own plate. "I've just been so _busy_, you know."
"Weyrlinghood is like that. What's Ibranth like, besides big and enthusiastic?" K'mai loved listening to a new weyrling gush about their dragon, the way their eyes lit up with adoration for their lifemate.
"He's _amazing." R'zen responded, brightening a little bit. "We're clearly the best bluepair in our class, and Ibranth’s so strong, so determined-- he challenges bigger dragons and they let him. He knows what he wants and he goes right for it." He added, lifted his chin proudly. "We haven’t done too much in lessons yet, but when we do, _both_ of us are going all out to do our best."
"I'm sure you will." K'mai smiled at his determination. "Maybe you'll end up in the Weyrleader's Wing."
R'zen's eyes fairly lit up at the idea, and the blue weyrling unconsciously stood a little taller. His eyes narrowed, and across the still new bond, Ibranth sensed his mood shift and briefly stirred, sending sleepy certainty that only bolstered his confidence.
"We _will_." He said, and squared his shoulders. "They'll pick us the moment we're old enough, we'll _prove_ we're the best pick." He asserted.
K'mai fought against a laugh. "Come on, I'll introduce you to the Wing."
