New Neighbors!

Writers: Aaron, Steel
Date Posted: 30th March 2026

Characters: H'kami, Z'renh
Description: Z’renh notices he has a new neighbor.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 13, day 18 of Turn 12

}: Z'renh. There is someone on my extra ledge,:{ Adamanth grumped.

**It’s not yours.**

}:I had it first!:{

**You have our ledge. If someone has moved into that empty weyr, it’s theirs now. Introduce yourself.**

}:Harumph. Fine.:{ To the newcomer, Adamanth said, }:I hope you are enjoying that ledge, because it was mine before.:{

Teyrabth blinked, settling down more comfortably on his ledge now that his rider had unpacked and his harness was off. }:It is a very nice ledge.:{ He agreed placidly. }:I shall enjoy it.:{ he added, gaze turning to the bronze. }:I am Teyrabth.:{

Adamanth fumed quietly for a moment. This dragon was insolent. And horrible. He hated him already.

}:I am Adamanth.:{ But his tone was… professional. }:Z’renh, my rider, sends his regards to you and your rider.:{

}:Well met.:{ Teyrabth responded, mildly. }:Mine says that this Weyr is interesting. We have heard stories.:{ He paused, then added, }:Mine also says that he is looking forward to meeting new faces, and invites your rider over for a drink, or cards.:{

Z’renh loved drinks and cards!

**Do you think I can jump the gap between ledg--**

}:Just go around.:{

Moments later, Z’renh was knocking on the newcomer’s door. Adamanth had, of course, warned of his approach.

“Hey there.” H'kami greeted, even as he shouldered the door open. “Sorry if there's any mess, you know how moving is.” He added, with a laconic shrug. “C'mon in. H'kami, of brown Teyrabth, at your service.” He flashed a grin, gestured for Z'renh to enter.

“My friend, moving is the worst-- I know exactly how you feel.” Z’renh nodded. Of course, moving was surely much easier for Candidate, but… well, neither of them were Candidates anymore.

“I’m Z’renh, and that's Adamanth out there on the ledge giving your boy shit for no reason.” He gave a little salute. “Thanks for having me over. I'll help you get things straightened up if you need it.”

“Oh, it's all right.” H'kami assured. “Tey can handle snippy.” He stepped back, motioned Z'renh to enter.

“You like wine or ale? Got both.”

“I do!” Z’renh entered cheerfully, happy to drink whatever the newcomer was serving.

H'kami arched a brow, but motioned to the table and chairs. “Wine it is! Have a seat, I'll get the bottle out.” He added, and moved to start rummaging in a cabinet.

Z’renh took the seat opposite the one with H’kami’s flight jacket draped over it. At least, Z’renh presumed it was his. No judgment.

“That sounds perfect, thank you!”

It _was_ the right chair, if H'kami counted such things-- his flight jacket was, after all, slung over the opposite chair, though he'd have sat in either seat. He'd only tossed it there when he'd settled in.

He pulled out the bottle and two glasses, brought them over and uncorked the bottle with a flourish. “Here we are!” he announced, then slouched into his own seat.

“Thank you! Want me to pour you a glass?” asked Z’renh.

“Sure.” H'kami responded easily. “If you're offering.” He flicked the cork from one hand to the other, then back again, before it vanished.

Ooh, fancy. Z’renh smiled at the sleight of hand and poured two moderately generous glasses, H’kami’s first.

“So! Where did you move from?”

“Dream's End.“ H'kami responded, easily, lifted his wineglass toward Z'renh in a sort of cheers gesture. “To new places, and new faces?”

“Hear, hear!” Z’renh lifted his glass. “I came from Dolphin Cove, and Vista Point before that. How are you liking the cold, eh?”

“It's _cold_.” H'kami said, and huffed in amusement. “I'll admit, having to layer up just to step outside is an adjustment, but I'm sure I'll find out ways to keep warm.” He added. “And Teyrabth says there's still good sunning spots he's seen dragons on.”

“If only it were so easy to stay warm for us!” Z’renh complained. “I miss the beach.”

“At least it's just a quick hop between.” H'kami hummed, pulled out a deck of cards from his jacket pocket. “Not that there's no ways to get and stay warm _here_. I've never really been out Dolphin Cove way except in training.” He added. “The beaches were definitely pretty.”

“I’ve been back that way a few times since Adamanth and I have been allowed to travel,” said Z’renh. “It’s a popular vacation spot for folks around here-- especially those of us who weren’t born here. You still up for a round or two of cards?”

H'kami slid the card pack onto the table. “Definitely.” He assured. “Loser supplies the drinks next time? And you'll have to show us the Dolphin Cove spots sometime.” He added playfully.

“You’re on!” With as much as he had already demonstrated his dexterity, Z’renh suspected he would lose handily to H’kami-- but he already owed him the next round of drinks anyway.

One round. Two. Then five, before H'kami sighed and set his latest hand down faceup. “Good game.” He told Z'renh cheerily. “So, you aren't a Dragonsfall native either?”

“No.” Despite having lost every hand but one, Z’renh still had a great time. “I was born at Vista Point, and then I followed my father to Dolphin Cove. By the time he moved here, I was old enough to stay behind on my own, and I didn't want to leave my friends. But eventually, I decided it wasn't worth it to see him only when he could make time to come visit, so I sucked it up and took the cold plunge, too. I Impressed Adamanth here, though. He prefers the cold.”

“Huh.” H'kami mused, held up the wine bottle. “More?”

Z’renh cheerfully accepted a refill.

A pause, then he added, “Similar story here. My father was a Dragonsfall Weyr rider that got transferred out when they opened up more Weyrs. I Impressed at Dream's End, then it wasn't worth the argument not to follow him when he came back.”

“Ah! So your father rides here, too? Which wing is he in?” asked Z’renh.

“T'valland's.” H'kami supplied easily. “I'm in Ridge Wing, myself.” He added. “A'brevan's my Wingleader.” He paused, then continued. “Sounds like you like it here.”

“I’ve gotten used to it. I’m in L’val’s wing,” said Z’renh. “Alpine. So-- what have you seen so far? Have you just arrived today?”

“Just today, yeah.” H'kami said with a chuckle. “Checked in, got assigned a weyr, and unpacked-- then your Adamanth said hi to Teyrabth and here we are.” He winked.

“Oh, well, I hope I’ve met your expectations.” Z’renh chuckled.

“Oh, _definitely_.” H'kami responded, and grinned at him. “A friendly bronzerider next door and free drinks for life, what's not to like?” He elected not to add that Z'renh was handsome-- no sense in getting potentially punched.

“For life?” Z’renh laughed. “I thought it was just next time! Is this because I'm never going to beat you at cards?” He was not allergic to a man finding him handsome, though he himself had yet to meet a man he was interested in bedding.

“We'll just have to meet up again sometime soon and find out.” H'kami winked at him again. “Maybe next time you can bring a friend or two by.”

“I think I can manage that!” Z’renh had more than one friend, right? Well, he would figure that out later.
