"Cookies!" Sabia cheered as she raced into Zariah's weyr.
"We have to make them first, hatchling," K'mai said with a chuckle. "Hi," he said to Zariah. "Fair warning that I should never bake unsupervised, so it's a good thing you're here."
"Well, I am very incentivized to keep you from burning my home down," Zariah said seriously. Then, she crouched down to turn her full attention on Sabia, "What kind of cookies do you want to make? Big soft chewy ones? Little crunchy ones? Ones that need frosting? I've been doing a lot of baking this month." She explained, glancing up at K'mai. "Lots of cakes, so I'm well prepared."
"I want frosting!" Sabia declared. More sugar was always better.
"Ooh, frosting sounds good," K'mai said. "Did you ever consider bakercraft, or is this strictly for fun?"
"Oh, no. I despise waking up before the sun is up. I was practically raised in the kitchens, though, so I learned the important bits." She winked at Sabia, "Cookies. And cakes." Straightening, she started pulling out ingredients, pointing K'mai towards a stool he could pull out for Sabia. "I never saw a point in a craft that wasn't going to make me some extra marks, anyway. I wanted a dragon so I could use her."
"Wow, that's cold," K'mai said with a laugh. He set the stool out and the little girl eagerly clambered up.
"You made cookies and cakes all the time?" Sabia asked.
Zariah laughed, "Nah, Relsath agrees with me. She loves being the book dragon. She'd be bored witless if I was cooped up on craft studies instead of zooming her all around Pern." There was an agreeing rumble from the ledge outside.
"Yup, cookies and cakes for all the exciting events. Birthday, promotions, demotions." Patiently, she started measuring out ingredients and passing them to Sabia to dump in a large mixing bowl. "What did you plan to do if you hadn't impressed, K'mai?"
"Drag my feet as long as possible." He laughed. "My dad especially kept pushing me to find a craft. 'You need to apply yourself, Keemai'," he said in an exaggerated voice.
Sabia dumped the flour into the mixing bowl with more enthusiasm than necessary, sending up a little cloud that lightly dusted her arms and face. The five Turn old laughed. "Do you make bubbly pies too?"
"I don't, but it's because my sister makes them better. She makes those little purple ones they have in the dining hall." Zariah waved the cloud of flour away, but only seemed amused by the mess.
"Well, I was going to do that, too, but I did think about what I'd do if I didn't Impress. Probably work in the laundries. Better hours than baking but still a nice warm job. Sabia, what are you going to do when you grow up?" Zariah asked curiously.
"I'm going to be a dragonrider!" she said as she poured sugar into the bowl.
"Of course you are. A pretty little green would suit you well. They're the best color," Zariah teased, taking the bowl and starting to mix the ingredients together. "Alright, I'll get this mixed, then we can make the cookies. Round? Or cut outs? I have a dragon cookie cutter. K'mai, how did you make something so adorable?"
"What do you mean?" K'mai mock pouted. "I'm incredibly cute, of course I'd make an adorable kid." He wondered, casually, what his and I'serin's kid might look like. Which of them it would take after.
Sabia bounced. "Dragon cookies! Let's make dragon cookies!"
"Alright, you spread some flour out and we can roll the dough out once I'm done mixing," Zariah told Sabia cheerfully. Without looking directly at K'mai, she said, "So, K'mai, how is your friend I'serin handling the recent changes? I imagine being Wingthird gives him a lot more time for lunch dates compared to Weyrleader." *
K'mai froze. Then he remembered she knew about his lunches with I'serin, they'd talked about it. The "dates" part was a joke (right?). "I can't believe I still have to remind him to eat." He laughed, then turned more serious, watching Sabia spread flour all over. "He's relieved, you know. He never wanted that job. I know what some people have been saying about him. Judging him. But he really did try his best."
"If he didn't want the job, he should have taken Aluneth away. Especially the last flight." Zariah sighed, "No one thinks he did it out of malice, but a lot of people aren't here anymore because of him. He'll be fine, though." She plopped the mixed dough onto the countertop to roll out. "A'brevan doesn't beat people up for their past mistakes as long as they try to do better; he'll be fair to him. I assume that's why K'valdran gave him I'serin, E'kavas, and T'gyrlan."
K'mai bristled at the criticism of I'serin, and then bristled for a different reason at the mention of T'gyrlan. "I don't know why he demoted T'gyrlan."
Zariah handed Sabia the dragon cookie cutter, helping show her how to cut out the cookies.
K'mai's words made her look up at him in surprise, then she frowned. It made sense- K'valdran hadn't been here at the time. There was no reason for K'mai to know. "The other rider in T'gyrlan's accident was K'valdran's brother. He was never going to want T'gyrlan as one of his Wingleaders."
"Oh," K'mai said softly. "I didn't realize."
Sabia was happily pressing the cookie cutter into the dough, not paying attention to the serious conversation.
"Yeah. T'gyrlan is taking it a little hard, of course. I've been doing what I can to cheer him up." Zariah sighed, "I can't fault K'valdran, but it also isn't really T'gyrlan's fault, either."
"Maybe we should give some of these to T'gyrlan," Kmai said. Not that cookies would fix anything, but it might make him feel a little better to know his friends were thinking of him.
"Can we make them different colors?" Sabia asked.
"I think he'd rather a nice drink and an ear to listen to him complain. He can't really complain about things properly to me, and he doesn't have much of a sweet tooth. Much to my dismay; I always thought I'd bake my way to a man's heart," Zariah joked.
Reaching into a drawer, Zariah pulled out a couple little glass bottles with droppers. "I have blue, green, and red. We can color the frosting."
"I can make Sirjath and Sebeth!" Sabia was so happy she could make cookies of her favorite dragons.
"Yeah I should stop by with a bottle and see if he wants to vent a little," K'mai said. Then he turned to Sabia. "How about we make some for Uncle I'serin too?"
The little girl made a slight face, but then her expression smoothed over. "Okay."
K'mai laughed to cover the sting. "What? Don't you like him?"
Sabia pressed the cutter into the dough. "He's a little weird. But I guess he's okay."
K'mai mock-whispered to Zariah, "She gets the brutal honesty from her mom."
Zariah met K'mai's gaze, raising an eyebrow at "uncle I'serin". Putting on a mock-horrified tone, she said, "She's doing all the hard work. She should get to decide who gets the cookies. Don't you agree, Sabia?"
"Alright, let's get these in the oven. Look out." Once the tray was baking, she smiled at K'mai, "Thank you for bringing her by. I didn't do this enough with my kids when they were little."
"Thanks for inviting us. She's growing up so fast and I don't want to miss out on too much." K'mai pulled Sabia against him in a one-armed hug. "My little hatchling isn't so little anymore."
"Time flies," Zariah agreed. "I can hardly believe how tall Raleri is every time I see her; she's going to be taller than me any day now. And she's constantly rolling her eyes at me. Sabia would never, I'm sure."
"I wouldn't make any bets." K'mai laughed.
"Smart man," Zariah laughed, "Alright, now let's get the frosting ready." The time for serious talk over, she resumed their baking lesson.
