Description: Mesarian washes Reveroth and spends more time with R'bharra.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 6, day 25 of Turn 12
Notes: Mentioned: T'lonas, I'serin
After over a month at the Weyr, Mesarian was starting to recognize some of the dragons and a little smile tugged at his mouth when he saw a familiar green in the winter lake. Her rider was a welcome sight as well. "Need a hand?" Mesarian called as he stepped up to the shore.
"I never turn one down." R'bharra grinned and nodded to Mesarian.
Reveroth wiggled happily, and her eyes whirled shades of blue and indigo to see someone who was clearly one of her favorites. She liked him at first sight. And he had on the little white loop that meant she had already picked him, though she could not precisely remember doing it.
"Reveroth says hi."
Mesarian shucked his clothes and waded in. "Hello, sweet girl," he said as he scratched Reveroth's eye ridge. Being around dragons made him almost remember what love and trust felt like.
The green hummed contentedly, her eyes closing for a moment.
"How's the Candidate life treating you?" asked R'bharra. "Not so bad in the room and board department, eh?"
"I haven't agreed yet," Mesarian said. "Not that I don't want a dragon, it's just all the rules and shit."
"Ahh, the rules and shit." R'bharra nodded knowingly. It was not nothing. But it had been worth it. It was hard to explain that to someone who did not fully understand it already, though. "That's fair. Well, the real trick, if you want to give it a go, is to wait until T'lonas is ready to cut off newcomers and get in under that wire. That way, you only have to worry about extra rules for a little while."
"Or forever. If you Impress." He grinned. "But there is a lot of freedom in having wings."
"Ain't no eggs on the Sands, so there's no rush." Mesarian picked up a brush and started scrubbing. "I'm going to get a pretty green just like you," he told Reveroth. He'd feel like an absolute dimglow later if he didn't Impress.
R'bharra's grin turned to a more genuine smile as he felt Reveroth's joy at the lad's claim.
"She's happy for you," he said. "And she can't wait to meet her."
Mesarian smiled as he washed the green, thinking of what it would be like to have his own dragon. He'd spent Turns hiding whenever he saw a dragon overhead in case they were looking for him, but his wariness had evaporated shortly after he arrived at the Weyr. Spending time with a dragon was one of his favorite things, right up there with sex, the abundant food at the Weyr, and a warm bed. "I like being on top, though. So maybe a blue."
R'bharra chuckled.
"You know, we used to be so sure that was what the dragons were choosing for. Maybe during the Interval, they could afford to be so picky. Now, it looks like they've been starting to choose however which way they want. Or maybe they were all along, and we just let the stereotypes decide how we were seeing ourselves-- who can say. Maybe you'll get a bronze."
Mesarian waved a hand dismissively. "No bronze for me." Why dream of something he could never have? R'bharra was probably just trying to be nice, but Mesarian knew what kinds of dragons men like him Impressed to. "But speaking of sex, how about a romp after we wash your pretty lady?"
"I'm not busy." R'bharra grinned. The kid would be surprised on the Sands, or he would not. R'bharra's only loss would be waiting for him to get out of training.
"Good." Mesarian grinned at him.

A while later they were pressed together in bed, their breathing slowly returning to normal. "Mmm, that was good." Mesarian ran a hand along R'bharra's chest.
"I've had a little practice." Nevertheless, R'bharra was always happy to get a good review. "You're welcome up any time I'm here." Even if he already had someone over, most of the time.
"Good. I like your bed." Mesarian glanced up at him with a smile. "The company's not too bad, either."
"It's nothing to sneeze at, that's for sure," R'bharra chuckled. "And I've ended up in bed with a fair few men."
"Sure is nice to be in a place where I can ask a guy into bed and I don't have to worry about him throwin' a fit about it." Mesarian stretched lazily.
"Turn you down, maybe. But I've hardly ever seen a fit about it. Mainly from poor little former Holder H'der who told everyone he was going to ride bronze and walked off the sands with the prettiest little green," said R'bharra. "But even they eventually get over themselves."
"Pfft, holders," Mesarian said. "They ain't right in the head."
"Not one bit," R'bharra agreed. "It's curable, though. They turn into weyrfolk bit by bit. They can't help it. Dragons have a way of showing them."
"You weyrfolk must get so tired of holder nonsense." Mesarian sure was.
"I have to deal with it more than most. As a Searcher," said R'bharra. "Most of us can almost pretend they don't exist."
Mesarian was quiet for a long moment. "I wish someone like you had found me sooner. But you don't Search people like me, do you? Holdless. Heard there was a big fuss after you gave me that token."
"Feh. Don't worry about I'serin. It wasn't too hard to get around him," said R'bharra. "But that's the trouble with Searching Holdless, isn't itâ€" where do I go to find them? It's not as though we ever had a permanent residence, and even when we did stay someplace a long time, we typically didn't want the Weyr to know where that was."
"We?"
"My... dads and I."
Mesarian sat up. "_You_ were Holdless? And dads, like, more than one? Like _together_?"
"I would have sworn you'd have heard all this by now from those other two you put up to talking to Reveroth," R'bharra chuckled. "They adopted me as a babe. Found me on the side of the road or something."
"That's feckin' amazing. I mean, not that you were dumped, but that you were Holdless and raised by a couple of men. No wonder you weren't bothered by me." And it made more sense why the leadership was upset, if they knew R'bharra had been Holdless and Searched a Holdless man, it might make them think they'd made some kind of deal. "So you really know what it's like."
"I was much younger than you are now when I got Searched," said R'bharra. "But I still remember what it was like to live out there."
Mesarian laid back down beside the greenrider and traced his fingers along R'bharra's arm. "I got made Holdless when I was much younger than I am now."
"My dads lost their homes the same way. I try to keep an eye out for kids like them, like you out in the Holds, too. For Searching. Not for this." R'bharra gestured to his bed. He did not need anyone thinking he took every lad he Searched to bed-- especially not the young ones. "For whatever it's worth, I'm sorry we didn't find you sooner."
Mesarian ducked his head, fighting a battle with himself -- the part that wanted to pull away, and the softer part he'd tried to stuff down for Turns. Being vulnerable was dangerous. It meant he could get hurt, that others would take advantage of his weakness. R'bharra could reject him, even get Mesarian kicked out of the Weyr if he pulled the right strings . . . but wouldn't it be better, then, to try to stay on his good side?
Slipping his arms around the greenrider, Mesarian kissed him. "I'm glad you found me now."
R'bharra was not sure to make of that. Mesarian had not seemed the kissing type before. Well, not tenderly like that anyway. Still, he put his arm around him. It seemed like it would be difficult to tell Mesarian he did not need to kiss him like that without sounding like he was telling him _not_ to kiss him.
"Me, too."
