K'mai had been looking for an opportunity to speak with Orifa, but the
few times he'd spotted her she was busy with weyrling training, or
else he was in a hurry to get to his own duties. But finally he saw
the girl standing alone in the Weyrbowl, looking up at the older
weyrling class doing their flying lessons. "Orifa, hello."
The young girl had been lost in her thoughts, eyes following the
flying dragons with fascination. She would be up there some day with
her Lalorth...flying together, dipping and swirling through the air,
just like that green there, or even diving like the other green.
K'mai's voice made her jump in surprise and she turned, nearly
stumbling over her own feet. "Oh! Hello....K'mai, right? Sorry! I was
just watching them."
"Yes, it's K'mai." He looked up at the weyrlings as well. "Eager to be
up there with them?"
Her eyes were wide as she peered at K'mai. "Kinda. But I'm a little
scared too. Cause my sister says it's dangerous. But Lalorth wants to
fly with me too. Do all greens fly like that?" She pointed at an
acrobatic green that was in the air, banking sharply, diving and then
making an abrupt turn again. The larger dragons were far slower than
the little green, and it was dazzling that the green seemed so agile.
"Maybe not _all_, but greens are faster and more agile than the bigger
dragons. Lalorth will fly circles around the bronzes and browns."
K'mai smiled. "Flying _is_ dangerous. You're high up, and things can
go wrong, but for the most part your dragon will keep you safe. Just
mind the Weyrlingmasters and make sure to check and secure your
straps, and you'll be fine. I get the feeling your sister has a
tendency to uh, overworry a bit."
Orifa flushed a little and nodded. "She worries about me. I know she
does. She's the oldest afterall and after she Impressed, with what
happened with our Mama, well..." She shuffled her feet. "She's not
allowed back at Dragonsfall anymore." She looked back up at K'mai and
chewed her lower lip. "Is it normal to be scared of flying at first?"
"Sure, especially if you aren't weyrbred. But your dragon will take
care of you."
"You're weyrbred, though, right? You're from here aren't you?" Orifa
turned to give more attention to him, eyes wide. "I think I remember
you said that, right? Sorry, my memory isn't so good sometimes. I just
forget things!"
"I'm weyrbred yes. But I'm from River Bluff." Someday, probably, it
would stop hurting to think of his lost home.
"OH. That's the Weyr that got destroyed, right? I heard about that."
Seeing his face she suddenly moved and clasped him in a sudden,
unexpected hug. "I'm so sorry."
He stiffened for a moment in surprise but then wrapped his arms around
her. "Thank you." She really was such a sweet girl.
She didn't notice the slight stiffening, instead squeezing him lightly
in the embrace before stepping back and looking up at him. "I really
should go. There's going to be lessons again soon and chores...then
more chores and more lessons. It's like I'm being stuffed full and I'm
about to explode."
K'mai chuckled. "It's been a while, but I do remember how busy
weyrlinghood is. I hope we can have another chat soon, Orifa."
She hesitated before she walked away and shifted on her feet. "Do...
do you help weyrlings sometimes?"
He arched an eyebrow, wondering if she might have heard something. "In
what way?"
"With lessons." Orifa replied. "We've got two big classes and I need
some help." She shifted on her feet. "I don't understand everything
sometimes."
"Oh, not very often." K'mai wasn't sure if he was relieved or
disappointed it hadn't been what he thought. "But I'd be happy to help
you in any way I can."
"Okay." She brightened and then waved. "I'll see you later then, K'mai! Thanks!"
K'mai waved back and watched her go. Well, helping her with her other
studies should make things easier when he brought up helping her with
experience.
