Description: Benaran reports to his father for instructions after the earthquake
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 11, day 2 of Turn 3
After following his father's instructions and getting a headcount in the Serhox wing and making certain that the technicians were well on the way to returning power there, Benaran reported to Benaroy's office with a sharp knock.
"Ah, good, Benaran. You finished your headcount then? Everyone accounted for?" Benaroy asked as his second son strode into the room.
"Yes, everyone is accounted for. Some very minor injuries and Uzila was unsettled with the quake and took a tumble, but it does not look like the fall harmed the baby. I sent her off to bed to be safe," he reported. "And what is the word on Amethyst Cliffs?" Benaran had of course heard bits and pieces, but had focused on his own duties before seeking more information.
"I will be meeting with Cyrek, their steward, and Hallmasters as soon as possible." There was much to be done in the meantime of course.
"Benaran, I will be putting you in charge of finding places to house all of the incoming refugees. We will need to get the staff organized to get the empty rooms ready to be filled. We may even spill over into the cotholds. We are going to need every man, woman, and child not injured or otherwise engaged to help. I trust your leadership skills in this matter."
"Of course, father. Are most coming adragonback or overland? When are we expecting the first arrivals?" Benaran's mind was already calculating what would be required.
"Some of each, I would imagine. But that is yet to be determined in this meeting I will have with the Hallmasters, Weyrleader and Steward."
He gave his son an apologetic smile. It was no real answer to his question, but not even _he_ had all the answers yet. "Let's just assume that they are coming as soon as possible. Tell Royah to help you."
Benaran gave a nod, undaunted by the limited information. "And has there been any more word of Alalir or his family?"
"No, not yet," Benaroy sighed. Though he did hope that they would be found alive, a Lordless and uninhabitable Hold could only be good for his own Amber Hills. He was, after all, related to the Bloodline, and so were his sons. The Lord Holder felt a stab of guilt at the thought, but he had no time for such emotions. Amber Hills and its interests came first. "I have other bad news, I'm afraid. Our own steward seems to have suffered a minor heart-attack."
Benaran's thoughts were running along the same lines as his father's as he considered the more far reaching possibilities of this tragedy. He felt no guilt about his deliberations, as to him it was only sensible to reflect upon the such matters. "Shayven? Is he going to be alright?"
This news was indeed distressing. This was not a time for the hold to be without it's steward.
"They think so. But he will need to take it easy. I will be relying on Shadux until his father recovers."
"Shadux is quite competent," Benaran agreed, thinking to himself that the man was still quite young, but well aware that he and his brothers could take up any slack. "Our smaller holdings have all fared well, from the reports I've received," he stated with a bit of a question in his voice, seeking any information that would affect his placement of refugees.
"Yes, we've been rather lucky there," Benaroy nodded. "There were a couple landslides in the canyon that have covered the roads, but they are all south of the dam. Boats and rafts can be used to by-pass those until the roads are cleared. After that we will know more, but all the information thus far is positive."
"That is good to hear. Well, I should begin seeing to the arrangements.
I will coordinate with Zelanka to see that we've linens and blankets for the rooms. Is there anything else, Father?"
The Lord Holder shook his tired head. "No, that's all for now. But send Imaroy and Benil to me. I need them to run messages."
"I'll do that, and send Benider as well. He will be anxious for the opportunity to do something," Benaran said, thinking that his eldest son would feel quite important running errands for his grandfather. "Let me know if you need anything else, Father," Benaran said, looking the older man over to make certain the stress wasn't taking too heavy a toll on the Lord Holder.
"Yes, yes," the Lord Holder said with a quick nod, his mind already moving on to the bigger issues at hand.
Benaran smiled as he exited. Lord Benaroy looked more animated and alert than he had in awhile. Perhaps he had needed an emergency to get his blood flowing.
