Description: Talwynn and D'kere make some friendly wagers.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 8, day 26 of Turn 9
Notes: Mentioned: Talerin
Talwynn had spent the better part of an evening with her brother and
some of his friends, playing cards and chattering. She still had an
amused grin on her face when she came back into the weyr she and D'kere
shared.
"Are you home?" she called in.
"In here," he called. The bronzerider had a book open in front of him,
inside of which was notes, diagrams, and other information regarding
dragon anatomy. As a journeyman dragonhealer, D'kere tried to stay in
touch with his craft, even though his job as G'nir's 'second took up all
of his time. It was helpful having the knowledge when working with the
Weyrlings.
"What are you looking at?" she asked as she came in, sat down and began
unlacing her boots.
"Just studying up on all those little parts of the wing," he said,
finally looking up as she sat down. "Have fun with Talerin?"
"I did. He and some of his classmates are getting their misbehavior out
of the way before the eggs hit the sands."
D'kere smiled, "That's the best thing to do. Once the eggs drop
everything changes." He was looking forward to it as usual. There was
something about the excitement and hope that buzzed through the Weyr
every time a clutch was on the Sands that made D'kere glad he had
chosen to work with Weyrlings.
"It's true, you have to focus a lot more. My class was so serious as
soon as the eggs were laid - but that's because Calyth had dropped a
gold egg and all the girls sobered up real fast," she remembered. "No
such thing to change it all for the boys."
"You have any ideas about what you think Talerin might Impress to?" he
asked. One could never be sure, but some boys knew if they were
destined for a green or blue versus a brown or bronze.
"You know, the last time I asked him what he wanted, he said a gold,"
Talwynn said, laughing and shaking her head at the impossibility of
that. It was exactly the kind of flippant, non-serious answer she
would have expected from him.
"He was running pretty steady with a girl named Rielle for a Turn,"
she added, after a moment.
"Hm, I don't think I recognize the name. I take it she's not a
Candidate or rider?" D'kere asked.
"No, she's..." Talwynn scrunched her nose slightly as she went to
remember. "Crafter, I guess."
"You and I should take a friendly wager on what we think he'll
Impress," D'kere lifted his eyebrows, raking his gaze over Talwynn
suggestively.
She said, "Loser does chores for the other one?"
"I was thinking more like... loser can't weyr clothes around our weyr
for a sevenday," a toothy grin followed.
"Oh, I see how it is. _That_ kind of wager. Hmm. Good thing it's just
us here. Imagine if your weyrlings could hear you making salacious
bets like that," she teased.
"They would be shocked, I'm sure, since I do my best to keep a
wholesome persona around them," D'kere waggled his eyebrows. "Only you
know the real me."
"Weyrmate privilege," she said lightly. "All right. Done. What are you
betting?"
D'kere narrowed his cobalt eyes, drinking in everything that he found
attractive about Talwynn, from her smokey grey eyes down to the way
she crossed her legs when she sat. "Two backrubs with benefits, plus
oils."
"Two, huh? Sounds fancy and I like it."
"Then it's a deal. Why don't we both write it on a piece of paper,
seal it in an envelope and we'll opening Hatching night?"
"What if we guess the same thing?"
"Good point... I came up with the backrubs, you decide what happens if
we're both winners." The Weyrlingmaster's second got up and retrieved
a couple of slips of paper and an envelope.
"I'll give it some time and come up with something good," she said,
taking the slip he handed her, writing her guess, and then handing it
back.
