I Have An Offer For You...

Writers: Rebecca, Yvonne
Date Posted: 21st March 2006

Characters: D'wrayt, J'nus
Description: D'wrayt has an interesting proposition for J'nus
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 10, day 16 of Turn 3

The summons came just as J'nus was about to leave his weyr to brave the dining cavern for dinner. The Weyrleader wanted to see him, and the bronzerider couldn't for the life of him guess why. **I keep my head down, Kopth. So why does he want to see me?**

}:Treadoryth did not say why,:{ the dragon replied, }:but I am sure that it is for a good reason.:{ This did not leave J'nus comforted - there were too many definitions of 'good'. Good as in happy? Good as in pleasurable? Good as in, the Weyrleader had his eyes on J'nus for some reason that might be 'good' or 'bad', depending on the situation? No... 'good' was not a good word. He paused just outside of D'wrayt's office door before knocking to calm his thoughts - there was no use in meeting the man while he was thinking _that_ much.

D'wrayt opened the door in answer to the knock as he knew who it would be. "Thank you for coming so quickly, J'nus. Come have a seat.
I've got some meatrolls if you're hungry," he said gesturing to the platter of food on the edge of the desk. He had been planning to work through the evening meal and had actually remembered to have someone send him some food.

"No thank you, Weyrleader." J'nus sat. It would feel a little odd to eat D'wrayt's meatrolls during a formal meeting.

"I'll get straight to the point, J'nus. I was wondering if you would take over leading Cyan for U'kaiah. I don't know how long it will be, that is up to U'kaiah, but I feel that you would be the best rider for the job." he said having wrestled for a few days on who to put as wingleader for Cyan. He hated having to change up the wing leadership so soon, but it was for the sake of the Weyr and the mental well-being of their wingleader even if he didn't acknowledge it.

J'nus was suddenly very glad he hadn't taken a meatroll - if he had, he'd probably be sitting there slack-jawed as half-chewed bits slowly tumbled out between his lips and landed on his tunic. "I- suppose so.
I mean, yes. But this was the _last_ thing I expected when I walked in here today."

"Good, I'm glad you're willing. You've been here at Dragonsfall at least as long as I've been a dragonrider, so you know the wing and the procedures. I need someone that I can count on to do what's best for the Wing. S'rak's a good rider and great Wingsecond, but he doesn't know the Wingriders like you do." D'wrayt said.

"I... ah... you have a lot of faith in me," J'nus said, feeling overwhelmed. He'd been Wingsecond before Thread returned, but was demoted when a new Wingleader took over. And what would happen to S'rak?

"That's my job, is it not? To have faith that my riders can do what I ask them to? I wouldn't ask if I wasn't certain you were up for the job." D'wrayt replied.

J'nus felt himself swell a little with pride, but quickly squashed it. There was nothing worse than a bronzerider with an over inflated ego. **We have big enough egos as it is,** he reminded himself. But still... "How long do you estimate U'kaiah will be out? Sevendays?
Months?" **Turns?**

"At least a few sevendays, hopefully he'll get himself together rather quickly." The bronzerider did his best to squelch his disappointment. He did want U'kaiah to pull himself together, but... "I'd be happy to lead the Wing in the interim, Weyrleader."

"Thank you, I really appreciate it." A few weeks, perhaps... well, it was a step in the right direction.
J'nus was smiling when he left the office.
