Description: Uegot gets tempeted with a job. Away from his family.
Location: Elsewhere on Pern
Date: month 3, day 15 of Turn 9
Cerulean Wind flew over the choppy waters like avian. The ship was
almost as old as Uegot, but shards, she took rough weather like dragon
to the skies. She has to be one of the fastests ships Uegot ever
served on.
"Well, number one, looks like we're heading to a storm," the captain
remarked, he was manning the helm himself. Next to Uegot, he looked
short, although his arms were almost as thick as his.
"I hope it won't force us to go around," Uegot replied, examining the
horizon with spyglass.
"What, worried you won't make it to the homeport in time?" Aillor asked.
"For once, I would love to be there when Nerylyn gives a birth," Uegot
said with frustrated tone. Most of the time when their children had
been born, he's been out in the sea.
"Didn't you say that it's still months away?"
"Yes," Uegot grunted. The Seacraft Hall's destruction had forced him
to take a ship-assignments again. He needed the marks to provide for
his family. This one was temporary, Aillor's first mate had broken a
leg and Uegot was just filling-in. He had enjoyed working for Aillor
though, and the captain have been tempting him with a more permanent
position. Aillor wasn't just a captain, he was the owner and he owned
two other ships beside this one.
"But after this trip comes the next and then the next, " he continued.
"Are you still considering my offer about Indigo Wind? She's a good,
solid ship. Not as fast as this little lady. But she's newer, bigger
and hauls cargo and passengers along the coast."
"I'm keeping it on my mind," Uegot replied. "There's also few harbour
master jobs available."
"Harbour master? You?" Aillor scoffed. "You're a navigator, you belong
to the deck of a ship. Teaching it to apprentices is one thing, being
harbour master, " he shook his head, "You'll be bored in no time."
Not to mention someone like Uegot would make smuggling and other
not-so-legitimate side businesses harder. Aillor was mostly an honest
Captain but some of his actions didn't take closer looking.
Uegot just shrugged and put the spyglass away.
"Time to trim those sails. Put those lazy maggots to work," Aillor commanded.
"Aye, captain."
