Kapera

Jeyme was careful and methodical as she folded and packed away clothes for herself, Dheymin and Ayeme. She took special care with the things that A'dan had bought for the children.

Would she be able to work in a Weyr with Kapera again? When she'd first left Dolphin Cove, Jeyme would have said no, but things had been civil enough between them back at Far Island's Hatching...

**Flashback**

"She'll be fine, Jeyme," A'dan reasoned, his hand gentle on the greenrider's elbow as they walked together through the crowd. Far Island's Weyrleaders were celebrating another strong, healthy hatching of dragonets, but all Jeyme could think about was leaving Ayeme with her foster mother. It was the same woman that kept Dheymin, so it wasn't that Jeyme didn't trust her, it was just that Ayeme was only a couple of months old, so she had a hard time being apart from her.

"I know, it's just... I get such limited time with her anyway." Jeyme was wearing a black dress, tailored to flatter the curves that her pregnancy had left behind.

The pair continued their conversation until they ran into a face that was very familiar to Jeyme.

"Kapera."

The goldrider had been sent to this Hatching as Dolphin Cove's official representative, because Cyradis was currently occupied with a task. She'd already thanked the successful pair whose Hatching it was, and now she was circulating through the crowd, mingling and keeping an eye out for people she might want to dance with later. It was a joy to get to socialize elsewhere.

She hadn't expected to run into Jeyme, but it shouldn't have been a surprise, she did know where the greenrider had transferred. The other woman was in a good dress andlooked well enough.

"Jeyme, how are you and Quinneth?" she asked curiously.

Jeyme hadn't seen or spoken to Kapera since that day....

"We're well," Jeyme replied evenly, remembering the man at her side. "Kapera, this is brownrider A'dan, this is Kapera, my former..." the word friend should have gone there, but instead, "Wingsecond."

A'dan, of course, never missed a beat, his telltale smile was in place, blue eyes a glow as he tipped his head to Kapera, "Well met, my duties to your queen." He'd been around Jeyme long enough now to have heard the name Kapera before. "I'm going to grab us drinks," he pressed a kiss to the top of her head, before excusing himself from their presence.

"Well met, A'dan. To you and your lifemate as well," Kapera replied.

When he'd left, leaving her alone with Jeyme, she smoothed her hand down the side of the dark green dress she wore, a gesture of nervousness. "How has Far Island been treating you?"

"Good," Jeyme said honestly, "the weather is very similar to Dolphin Cove, so that's been nice. The people here are nice, so nice in fact, that I had a baby a couple months ago." She said with levity, hoping to keep the mood light.

"Congratulations! A son or daughter?" Kapera asked. She found no interest in babes at all but it seemed like they made Jeyme happy.

Jeyme knew Kapera didn't care, but it was at least keeping the small talk going. "A girl, a flight baby, not quite the way I wanted to start my time at Far Island." It made her feel guilty to refer to Ayeme has just a "flight baby" even though that had been the way the pregnancy started, Jeyme loved her daughter with A'dan as if she'd been planned from the beginning.

"How are things at Dolphin Cove?"

"A girl, how cute. I hope you're both doing very well," Kapera said. "Dolphin Cove is fine. We've finally settled on a wing composition, it seems. There were a few months of reshuffling River Bluff people, adjusting the color balance in the wings, I'm sure it happened here too."

"Yes, that was a terrible thing." Jeyme couldn't imagine what it had been like for those poor people at River Bluff.

There was a lull in conversation, which A'dan broke with his return, "Here you go," he handed Jeyme some wine.

"Well, it was nice running in to you, Kapera."

"I'm glad to see that you're well," Kapera said sincerely. Jeyme had had a child, and she seemed to be doing well. That was good for her. The goldrider felt a pang of jealousy that Jeyme seemed to have everything together.

"Want me to say hi to anyone for you?" she asked casually. if Jeyme didn't say anyone, then she wouldn't mention running into her.

Jeyme thought about it for a moment, "Just Cyradis, tell her that she was right about brownriders."

A'dan grinned a little as Jeyme put her arm through his. "Ma'am." He inclined his head to Kapera, and then the pair continued on their way through the crowd.

That was an interesting message to pass on, and Kapera laughed. "I'll be happy to pass it on," she said. She wondered what Cyradis would think of that statement and she hoped she got to see a reaction.
