Description: Erivana's Hatching is more eventful than she expected.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 1, day 11 of Turn 9
Notes: Mentioned: Saibra/Chioneth, Tarley
The humming started out at the Hatching Grounds when Chioneth noticed
her eggs rocking, and then spread to other dragons as they picked up on
it. The humming grew in volume and echoed through the whole Weyr. The
Candidates were rounded from their duties, whether it was chores or
craft work or eating, and sent back to the barracks to change into their
robes and make their way to the Sands.
Erivana was nervous as she fell into line with the others, nervous in a
way she'd never been when she stood for clutches at River Bluff or
Dolphin Cove. Both of those had been Weyrs she considered her home. She
knew the dragonriders there, who were sometimes her patients and would
be her wingmates. She'd known what she would be getting into with the
weyrlingstaff if she Impressed. She'd had high hopes for standing before
Vilarth's clutch.
Here was unfamiliar Sands at an unfamiliar Weyr with unfamiliar
weyrlingstaff. A few sevendays wasn't long enough for Dragonsfall to
start feeling like home, even if she'd finally begun to learn her way
around the Weyr. And, of course, she was getting older, and this was one
of her last chances to Impress. If she didn't Impress, she couldn't keep
doing her craft.
So this Hatching wasn't exciting like the other ones she'd been to. The
closer they got to the Sands, the more dread she was feeling. Dread, and
anxiety. Not what you were supposed to be feeling when you tried to Impress.
**Just breathe, don't think,,** she told herself, taking a deep breath.
She couldn't de-age herself. She couldn't bring back River Bluff. She
couldn't change any of her circumstances. But she could open her mind
for a dragonet.
And then the weyrlingstaff was waving them into the Sands. She shuffled
out and hung around the back of the pack of white-robed individuals,
along people she recognized from River Bluff. Her eyes scanned the
scene. There was Chioneth surrounding her eggs, which were wobbling
aggressively. What was going to happen first?
One cracked open and a young bronze spilled out, crossing the sands,
heading towards the group she was in. She ignored it, scanning to see
where any green hides were, in hopes that one of them would lock eyes
with her. One passed close by, but she was intent on Naivas besides her.
She felt a pang of disappointment. Now that the baby dragons were
visible, her earlier apprehensions began to fade, replaced by a feeling
of excitement as she remembered why she wanted to Impress.
With what seemed like all the eggs hatching at once, there were too many
dragonets on the Sands to easily follow. She was lucky that she only had
to keep an eye out for green dragons that were interested in her –
unlike the boys, who had a number of colors to worry about – but the
downside was that there were _so many _ greens to try to track. She kept
turning her head back and forth.
As the Hatching dragged on, the Sands were too sharding hot under her
feet. She rocked her weight back and forth, trying to get comfortable.
She felt impatience begin to replace excitement. Why was she impatient?
A sea-green dragonet came into view, one who had pushed her way past a
few other dragonets and over to their group. The green seemed really
intent on making her way towards them and was swinging her head to clear
a path. Unfortunately, she hit Tarley as she did so, knocking her over.
**Dragonets. So clumsy,** she thought, having seen dragonets bowl
themselves and others over before. Erivana moved to help the other River
Bluff girl up, but before she could get more than a few steps over,
another green dragonet jumped on the one who had pushed the girl and dug
claws in -
- and her own back exploded in fire like the claws were slicing into her
own flesh. She staggered in shock at the biting, deeply unexpected pain,
sinking down to one knee. What -
}:Erivana! Help me!:{ echoed in her mind.
Erivana got back to her footing and staggered towards the pair of tiny
green dragonets. She didn't make it to them before suddenly, Chioneth's
large golden head swung into full view. The gold dragon must have done
something to correct the pair of her offspring because they separated.
The attacking dragonet made her way away from the bleeding one and
towards Tarley, and the bleeding one
- looked up and over to Erivana, her eyes turning from rapidly-whirling
red of outrage and pain to a slower blue-green color - and it made sense
now. Erivana threw herself the last few steps to the green and threw her
arms around her neck. The physical contact strengthened the mental
connection and she was inundated with the dragonet's thoughts.
Seryth had just been trying to get to her rider as directly as possible,
and that was why she'd pushed away Tarley, and Tarley had been chosen by
another dragon and she hadn't meant to hurt another dragon's rider but
just to get over to her own much faster, and she hadn't meant to get
clawed but she had been and it hurt a lot, but she had found her rider
and surely her rider was going to help her and make it all better now,
because her back hurt and so did her belly actually…
Now that she had realized that Seryth is really her dragon, and that the
pain she was feeling is Seryth's and not her own, she felt a little
better able to ignore the feeling of pain in favor of focusing on what
they need to get done. And what needs to get done is looking at Seryth
to make sure she's okay.
Now the Candidate worries. She has to be okay. She's Erivana's dragon.
They've just found each other. She can't _not_ be okay. She buries the
worry so she can be as confident as possible. A quick scan of Seryth's
back, reaching for her craft training. There's damage from talons and
ichor but the dragonet can push herself up and walk, if slowly. That
gives her the confidence to reassure Seryth, who is in pain and disgruntled.
"We've got to get you off the Sands. It's hot here. There's meat over
there. That will make your stomach feel better. And we can look at your
back," she said soothingly as she began to walk the green towards the
sides. "I'm a dragonhealer, you know. I'll make sure you're okay."
That was what riders did for their dragons, after all. They took care of
each other. And that's what this pair was going to do.
