Description: Jadirah reports to the Weyrhealer of Dragonsfall.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 13, day 1 of Turn 8
Notes: Mentioned: Drumilla
Jadirah headed down to the Infirmary less than two candlemarks after
she arrived at Dragonsfall. She had received her quarters and set foot
inside long enough to have left her bags there. Then she took her
children for lunch. Before she spent time with minor things like
unpacking, she wanted to find out where she'd be fitting into the new
Weyr. It was just how she liked to operate.
Taren was the Weyrhealer here. She was happy to see him again. He'd
been a journeyman while she was an apprentice, and she had nursed a
giant crush on him all through her teenaged Turns. She wondered how he
looked now.
Taren was busy trying to get everything organized, from the salvaged
medical records from River Bluff to records of his new staff. While he
was excited to have more staff, he was also getting more patients. The
sudden influx of River Bluff's riders was disruptive and chaotic, at
least for first sevendays, then things would settle down and they
would fine their comfortable routines again. Deep down Taren _enjoyed_
the chaos, it was an interesting challenge.
She entered the Infirmary and waved at the apprentice on duty. "I'm a
River Bluff transfer. Reporting to the Weyrhealer for assignment," she
said.
"Yes, Master Healer, I'll get him right away," the apprentice said,
skittering off.
"Weyrhealer, there's a new River Bluff person here to see you. She has
Master knots," Dharien said to the Weyrhealer when he saw him.
"Which one of them? Were there more than one master?" Taren gave the
scattered piles a scowl and gesture them in. The only transferr he was
sure was his sister Drumilla. He lifted his gaze to look. "Ah,
Jadirah?" his face broke into a charming smile.
It had been Turns since she'd seen him, and shards! Taren had aged
handsomely, like a fine vintage wine or brandy. His hair was starting
to grey but it was distinguished looking, and he was still muscled and
strong. Jadirah could feel her teenaged crush roaring back with a
vengeance.
"Weyrhealer Taren," she said, responding with her own broad grin.
"How's life at Dragonsfall?"
"it's good, the climate and snow took some getting used to," Taren
replied and pulled her a chair. "I came tot the River Bluff with my
team of healers after the destruction, how come I didn't ran into you
there?"
"My children are so excited about snow. My daughter's a Healer
apprentice, by the way, so she'll be joining us here," Jadirah relayed
as she sat down.
"I might have either been treating the Weyrleader or asleep. I wound
up with a few of the high-profile patients and then I just...crashed."
"That must be it, I spent most of the time I wasn't working with my
family. I took whatever patients I came across, then tried to outdrink
my brother, a seacrafter. Never a wise move. Then I had to come back
here for the Threadfall. Your daughter is welcome here," Taren
replied. "There is need for more healers since the number of
dragonriders has suddenly gone up. While they are getting used to
their new Wings and routines, I predict we have more Thread scorings
than usual."
"You tried to outdrink a Seacrafter? I bet your head aches that
morning," she teased.
The second part was sobering, but true. "I concur. The good news is
that we salvaged most of the medical records for River Bluff's
residents. So for the transfers we should know what they came in with
problems."
"Yes, it did," Taren chuckled before becoming serious too. "Well,
that's a relief and should make things bit easier."
"We'd lost some of them, but the Healers reconstructed what we could
from memory." The cavein had gotten parts of the infirmary.
"Good work from you," Taren complimented. "I remember those archieves
so well, I did my master project by looking for pre-interval
information about the Thread scorings. I spent way too much times
going thru records in all the Weyrholds that were active back then."
"That sounds fascinating," she said sincerely. "I remember how hard it
was to figure out what we were going to be facing, and those first
Falls. I'm hoping that the recovery crew will be able to rescue some
of them, I hate the idea they're gone forever."
"I hope so too, otherwise, who knows what valuable information gets
lost with them," Taren said.
"The restoration team said they'd be clearing anywhere with records or
official items first if they can, so there's that."
Dwelling on it too long depressed her, so she looked for safer ground.
"How do you want me to integrate into the Infirmary here? I'd like to
get to work as soon as possible."
"Let's see how we can work you in to our shift-schedule," Taren said
and pulled out a large hide. "We normally work on three shifts, it
makes eight candlemarks in a day, one day off per sevenday. During
Threadfall days, everyone is on duty. I try to have at least one
master in every shift, if possible. If there aren't many patients,
they don't have to be at the infirmary, just close by and on call."
It was a sensible schedule, Jadirah thought. "I won't object if you
want to put me on shifts other masters don't want for a bit, like
overnights."
"That would make them happy," Taren remarked, "but I don't want to
alienate or drive you off right away. How about if I pair you with
other masters for the first sevenday or two? That way you can learn to
know them and how this infirmary works and where we keep all the
stuff," he suggested. Every infirmary in every Weyr functioned tad bit
differently based on his experience. It all came down to the location
layout and the people staffing it.
"That sounds good to me," she said with a smile.
"Great," Taren replied and made the additions to the shift-schdule.
Then he found a scrap hide and wrote them down to her. "It's good
having you around here."
Jadirah took the schedule and smiled at him.
"I'm looking forward to working under you," she said as a reflexive
response, and then had to try very hard to keep a straight face as she
considered the other implication of her statment.
"That eager?" Taren asked with a chuckle.
"After what I've been seeing the last sevenday, a nice normal rotation
with Threadfall injuries is going to be better," she said.
"It will be," Taren agreed soberly.
She looked down at the schedule again and saw her first shift was
tomorrow. "Thank you again, Weyrhealer. I'll see you tomorrow."
