Genna

Genna

Genna smiled to herself as she balanced a wineskin on one arm and a small tray of sweets on the other. She was looking forward to spending an evening with Nokala. While she had started out as her teacher, the Harper Journeywoman had come to be a friend. Genna always loved hanging out with her chatting and sipping some wine. When Genna arrived at Nokala's quarters, she just called out to Nokala instead of knocking. She had her hands full with the goodies, after all. "Nokala, it's Genna! I come bearing gifts!"

The tall, lithe harper smiled to herself as she left the table she had been organizing. Walking forward, she held the hide flap open and ushered Genna inside. Her quarters were inside the Weyr since she didn't have a dragon that needed an opening. It made it less drafty and the lovely heat generated helped to soothe her body which was finally getting used to the different weather patterns. She did keep most of the floor covered with rugs, though.

"Well well so you are! And you seem to be in a much better mood as well. I wonder what may have caused that hm?" Shaking her head and lifting a brow, she took the wineskin and set it on the table. There were already a few things there-a loaf of bread, a plate of cheese, and the typical full klah pot necessary for the coolness of Dragonsfall. "Set it here and tell me what's happened in the world of young goldriders lately."

"Hmm." Of course, last time they had spoken, Genna had still been down and out over the whole mess with K'ran. She hadn't had the time to update Nokala on recent developments. She put down the sweets on the table and quickly found herself a place to sit. She relished in the coziness of Nokala's quarters. "Weeelll," she started, looking a little sheepish. "Things have kinda taken a new turn on the whole ordeal with K'ran."

"Ahha...a new turn? That sounds interesting." Genna was young and her ideas about relationships were far different from the weyrbred harper's. Still, Nokala found herself remembering what it had been like to be a young girl at one time with so much ahead of her. Her suitors had never been on the same level as a junior goldrider's perhaps, but it didn't matter. She knew, though, that K'ran was now going to be at River Bluff for some time, though. "So what's happened?"

"Well, I'm sure you've heard some whispers about what happened at the Emerald Falls Gather?" Surely she had, she was a harper, after all. "Well, K'ran heard them too and that finally prodded him into action. He came to visit me and realized at last how upset and angry I was. He.. uh.. has been making amends ever since."

"Sorry sacks of holder..." Nokala stopped herself when the gather was mentioned. She understood why it had happened, but that didn't excuse the fact that it had and what had led to it. The whole situation shouldn't have been allowed to get out of control as it had. **Then again, no one had thought to bring a harper in on things to mediate, had they? No. Apparently harpers at the hall had written the song for the Weyr, effectively alienating the holders and making it worse. Harpers couldn't take sides.** Still-Nokala was glad those holders had been punished well. They had had no right to treat a goldrider that way.

"Ah hm. Men are sometimes clueless, Genna. Sad to say. And enjoy the amends. That can be the best part." A smile crossed her face as she came over from the table, coming to rest on the small chaise she cherished. "If you're both going to be in long distance like that, you'll need to work on your communication for sure."

"Well, he is working hard for his return to grace, that's for sure," Genna laughed, a slight blush on her face. "That or he has missed me as much as I missed him." At Nokala's further comment, she nodded more seriously. "I really want to make this work. It's going to be really hard, with both of us so busy at different places. But somehow, we'll make it. We have to."

"I just hope you do whatever makes you happy my girl. Things change sometimes, people change. K'ran turns ago when I knew him is a lot different from K'ran of today. And you may be a very different Genna later. But do what you want for now, and deal with that then." Poking a small piece of pastry into her mouth, the tall woman stretched out her lithe legs. Genna's words brought up a concern. If the girl never imagined any other possibilities in her life, she would likely be very disappointed sometime later. After all, there were a lot of turns left and so many possibilities. She was very young to pin her hopes on one dream. Then again, she had been a holder. It made sense.

"I will," Genna nodded, taking that advice to heart. Living in the moment seemed just fine right now, because the moment was pretty good. Perhaps not as perfect as it had been before K'ran had become Weyrleader, but good nonetheless. "So, what has been going on with you lately? Anything new?"

"Not really. I find myself working more. That's not a bad thing since eventually when I'm ready I'll have to figure out what to do if I want to be a Master. There was a brownrider, but I haven't seen him lately." Her tone turned a bit wistful but then a smile crept over her face as she finished off the pastry and swallowed. "If I can catch a ride, I was thinking about going to the Dolphin Cove hatching. There might be a harper on their stage with long fingers." Her innuendo was clear. Nokala didn't want to dally with any of her colleagues that she dealt with often. Dolphin Cove, however, was an entirely different group of people that she may or may not see very often.

"I'd offer you a ride, but I still have to find one myself," Genna said. She still wasn't entirely sure what she thought about always being chaperoned to another Weyr's Hatching. It was such a hassle and it'd be so much easier if she could just take Lissath. Then again, she was pretty sure Lissath wouldn't be too pleased herself if strange golds came too close to her own clutch while it was Hatching. "What brownrider did you mean, by the way?" Maybe she knew the guy.

"Ah no worries. I'll figure it out even if I have to bug my brother," she shrugged. Sitting up so she could see Genna better, Nokala sighed and scratched her arm. "K'yne, rider of brown Arinoth." Of course he had been spending alot of time with the Weyrwoman recently. And now they had won Teseada's flight. She was sure Genna would know of the brownrider just for those reasons. Nokala wasn't a jealous person by nature. Being Weyrbred, she was happy to go another way if need be without much fuss. Still, she had enjoyed his company.

"Ah, yes, I know him," Genna said with a nod. "Those eyes, shards, I can see why you'd be interested." She gave Nokala a girlish grin. "However, a long-fingered harper doesn't sound too bad either." She did blush slightly at that comment. She had been raised to be a proper hold girl and old habits did die hard.

"Oh no, especially when they sing to you while...well anyway. Lots to be said for making good music together." She chuckled and rolled over, adjusting her position for comfort. "How are things at home?" Nokala remembered that Genna had made a visit recently. They had spoken about some of her concerns there, but it seemed like Genna was holding something back. The harper had never pressed though, leaving it to the young woman.

"Oh, wow," Genna was obviously impressed. Perhaps she'd find it a bit..odd herself, but she could get why the Harper would be in to such a thing. "They are.. alright," Genna said after a moment of thought. "It was nice seeing my brothers and sisters and uncle again. I even managed a conversation with my mother, so that was good, I guess."

"I would think so based on things you've said in the past. No matter what she's done and what's happened, she'll always be your mother. And based on how well you turned out I'd say most of her mothering wasn't so bad so she has to love you despite your disagreements." Nokala had never had children so far and didn't know if that day would ever come. She still felt very protective of her students, however, so she understood some of the relationship. "Maybe over time things will ease with the distance between you. Good to know you saw the others though. It's almost time for me to go see some of mine."

"I don't doubt that she loves me, in her own peculiar way," Genna said, still a little uncomfortable discussing her mother. "But you are right, maybe things will ease with time. Us talking was a big step forward anyway. Where does your family live?"

"Most of them are still at Far Island Weyr. My father, though..he came from a runner family. They have a station near Wetha Hold on the west coast, but some of them have spread out throughout the western part of the continent through marriages and the like. When you come through another station and find someone you like you end up staying." She shrugged, knowing the easy part of that life appealed to her. It was hard to explain though, that nomadic tendency. It was different than the traders.

"That's a romantic idea," Genna smiled. "Or perhaps rather practical, I guess, depending on how you look at it. You have a pretty large family, don't you?"

"My immediate family...no. My extended family-yes. Some of them I don't get to see very often though if at all. However, I can always get a message to them if I need anything. And that's what is important." Getting up and stretching her legs, Nokala walked back over to the table and put down the empty plate. "Usually holders have big families, much bigger."

"Or if they need you," Genna nodded. "Well, if you need a ride to visit any of them, let me know. If I'm free when you want to visit, I would love to take you."

"Thanks, I may take you up on that." Smiling to herself, Nokala shuffled the remaining goodies onto the least amount of plates possible. Settling in for a conversation about some mutual acquaintances they had, she was content to chat for as long as Genna wanted.
