Description: Talwynn gets inspected by the Weyrhealer.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 7, day 21 of Turn 8
Notes: Follow-up to "An Official Request"
Talwynn remembered her promise to G'nir to be checked out by the
Healers before he'd let her go any further with her aspirations. So it
was that she showed up at the Healers the next day, introducing
herself to the apprentice manning the desk and saying that she needed
a full physical examination for flightworthiness.
The apprentice took her name, checked who was available and soon led
her to Taren.
"Hello, Talwynn. Everything alright?" the healer greeted.
"Hello Masterhealer," she said formally. "I think I'm doing fine, but
I've been told to get a full exam for flight-worthiness," she
answered.
"Flight-worthiness? Are you trying to get back to active duty?" Taren
asked. He checked her records quickly. It had actually been awhile
since she last visited healers.
"I said I'd at least like to try delivering firestone," she admitted.
"I've been practicing on my own. Tavia saw me a few months ago when
I'd overstrained."
"But you haven't had a complete checkout for awhile," Taren remarked.
"Please, take off your shirt," he went to pick up the instruments he
would use.
She did as instructed and waited to see what would happen next. She
rolled her shoulders and noticed how it hurt less than it had used to.
Taren did general health inspection first: heart, lungs, hearing and
eye sight. She had no problems with those and got clean record of
being perfectly healthy. Then he directed attention to her old
injuries. "I'm going to feel for your muscles now," he told her.
"Yes sir," she said, trying to untense herself even though the nerves
were hitting.
Taren felt around her arm and shoulder, trying to gauge the condition
of her muscles and joints.
She had recovered some of the muscles-mass she had lost.
"Alright, let's see you throw something with that arm," Taren said
when he finished and went to fetch something to throw. He came back
with small bag filled with dried peas. It was only slightly larger
than his palm.
"Throw it against wall, try to use the same trajectory when throwing
firestone sack," he told her and took such a position where he could
observe the movements of her arm and shoulder. The sight of that bag
made his firelizard perk up and to leave his perch where he had been
napping.
She scooped up the bag and hefted it experimentally once, twice,
before pulling her arm back to fling it just like she would fling a
sack. It arched across the room to impact firmly with the wall.
Taren's flit instantly flied after the peabag. "No, Aes, we're not
playing Fetch no," Taren scolded him when the firelizard picked it up.
With cheerful chirp the bronze flew with the bag to Talwynn and
dropped it on her.
"Aes! Sorry about that," Taren said.
Talwynn laughed as the flit brought it back. "Do you need me to throw
it again?" It would give him a chance to see a second time.
"No, I saw enough," Taren replied. "You've made amazing recovery and
you've gained back much of what you've lost. You still have limited
range of movement. My biggest concern is the weight of those sacks and
that the repeated movement can cause irritation that leads to
inflammation."
"Is there anything that can be done to pre-empt that?" she asked.
"Warm up well before, long, relaxing soak in warm water afterwards.
Don't overdo it. You won't be able to last a full Fall, maybe not even
a half. Listen to your body, any signs of trouble like pain, numbness
or cramps, stop. Get enough rest," Taren adviced her
She nodded slowly as she listened. **Not a half fall - but this could
mean firestone, at least. Please, Faranth,** she thought to herself.
Warming up, soaking, resting - she could try.
"I understand. Can you write this up for the Weyrlingmaster, please?
He said if I passed an exam I'd have to demonstrate to him."
"Yes, I can. Congratulations, Talwynn, you passed," Taren grinned.
A smile broke across her face at the news. "Thank you, Master Healer," she
said. She really had. She was one step closer. Now all she had to do was
show G'nir...
"Congratulate yourself from the hard work you've done," Taren replied.
