Description: Talwynn's birthingday goes very well.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 5, day 13 of Turn 8
Talwynn's birthingday didn't fall on a Threadfall day or a rest day,
and the Hatching had happened two days before. Because it was an
ordinary day, she hadn't expected much to happen for it. But somehow
her family had found ways to surprise her. Her brother brought her
father over from Dolphin Cove in their evening, for her lunch, and
they had a family meal together. It was pleasant to catch up with
them, and she chose to linger slightly over it rather than rushing
straight back to watching the classes.
When she came back to her weyr in the evening, after the weyrling
classes were over and before dinner, she found a few presents
scattered around her room. Riveth hadn't mentioned anyone had gone
into her weyr. **Sneaky dragon,** she thought affectionately.
}:They asked me not to say to surprise you.:{
She sat down and started to pull at the wrapping to see what they'd left.
"There's the birthingday girl." D'kere said, entering with Talwynn's
father and brother in tow. He'd never really been introduced to either
of the men before, but Kenirath had told him about their arrival at
the Weyr.
"I see you've found the presents," Talern said as he entered, smiling
at his daughter.
"And was too impatient to wait," her brother added.
Talwynn set the boxes aside and jumped to her feet, grinning. "Well,
nothing said _not_ to open them now," she said.
She walked over to hug D'kere.
D'kere returned the hug, keeping his arm casually around her waist as
he snapped his fingers, "Ah, instructions, I didn't think that far
ahead." He grinned and then gestured toward the unopened gifts. "Don't
stop, let's see what you got."
"That one's mine. Do it first," her brother said, pointing at a bigger
package that wasn't the one she'd started with.
She unpacked this one to see what it contained. It had leather straps
that appeared to be riding straps, but not a full set. She looked
slightly puzzled as she held them up in the air.
"I heard tell you had a bit of trouble with the left leg. These should
clip into your regular straps and secure you more," T'rin explained.
A practical gift. She gave him a nod. "We'll have to test these out."
Then she went back to the first package, the soft one in cloth, which
turned out to contain two pairs gloves. The first pair were thin
hide, designed to be flexible enough for use in delicate tasks where
full mobility was needed. The second was made of a satiny material
dyed in dark blue, and they were long enough to reach her elbows.
"The practical ones are my gift. I've worn similar to the first set
for weather charting, so they should serve you in your craft," her
father said with a smile.
"It should be useful," she agreed. "What about the other pair?"
"The blue ones are from your sister, she says you should dress up nice
in them. She's sorry she can't come today but she's too far pregnant
to come /between/," her brother T'rin said.
It made sense her Weaver sister would find something this pretty.
Normally Talwynn wasn't sure if she was a 'pretty' kind of girl, but
these had some distinct possibilities.
T'rin turned to D'kere. "Did you get the birthday girl anything?" he joked.
D'kere wanted to tell T'rin that what he'd gotten Talwynn wasn't
appropriate to be seen in front of her father and brother, but he
didn't feel he knew the other two men well enough yet to get away with
that joke. "Of course I did." He said, withdrawing a small velvety
pouch and handing it to Talwynn.
The pouch was soft and her fingers stroked over it before she opened
it. The small item inside slipped out, a pendant on a chain. It was a
design of woman riding a dragon.
"It's lovely," she said, looking up at him and wondering when he'd had
time to find her jewelry.
"You might be the first person to get Talwynn wearing jewelry," Talern said.
"It's why I chose a necklace, it shouldn't get in the way like a ring
or bracelet might." D'kere confessed.
"A practical gift, then. Are you a practical man?" the dolphineer asked.
"Are you grading my partner?" Talwynn asked her father with an arched
eyebrow.
"It is the first time you've seemed so interested," T'rin said. "You
can't blame us for being nosy."
"Well, interrogate him on your own time," she said, a hot flush
creeping on her face. She was feeling uncomfortable about her family's
sudden interest in D'kere but she didn't know why.
"Speaking of time, it is very late where we're from," her father said,
perhaps sensing her distress and giving a good opportunity for a
graceful exit.
"Yes, I should be flying us back," her brother added.
Talwynn went to give both men a hug. "Thanks for visiting," she said.
"Not a problem." The men made their farewells, then stepped out.
When they were gone, she turned to D'kere and sighed. "Family. I
thought they were going to poke at you all night."
D'kere grinned as he came to slide his arms around her, "I don't mind,
that's what families are for."
"We'll have to spend some time with yours too. To be fair." But she
wasn't really thinking about family. Instead she turned back to kiss
him.
"Well that won't be hard, seeing as how there's only my mother." He
said, adjusting his hold on her as she turned in his arms.
"We'll have to spend some time with her, then. But later." She
squeezed his rear playfully. "I don't suppose there's a second
present?"
"Of course there's a second gift," his lips started on her ear and
nibbled a trail down her neck.
"Is it the kind I get to be impatient about, or do I have to wait for
it?" She shivered in his arms and pressed a kiss to his collarbone.
"You're the birthday girl, you get to pick." He said.
Her instincts said fast and intense, not wanting to drag it out and
take too long. But she also knew D'kere was sensitive and tender and
could draw things out until she was wrung out and blissful. "I'll go
for slow and letting you surprise me."
"As the lady wishes." D'kere said as he led her toward the bed.
