Shady schemes

Elanka poured more tea to her daughter's cup, took still warm scone and leaned back in her chair. They were spending nice afternoon tea, just two of them, no husbands or children/grand-children. Their discussion had already covered all that was going on in their family. It was time to talk about something else.

"Are you familiar with Nohria?" Zelanka asked her daughter. "She works as a drudge."

"Not very, I've met her once or twice but I haven't talked with her any great length," Pelanka replied.

"Good," Zelanka said and then she described the discussion she had with Nohria.

"So, you suspect _she's_ been the one luring those women to run away?" Pelanka asked and sipped her tea.

"Yes. Now, I can't start snooping around. I'm the Headwoman, far too visible person in a Hold. People notice if I start asking questions. She'll notice it, she ain't stupid. You, however, have no official rank in the Hold, besides being a wife and mother. Everyone knows you and Tarvon aren't exactly happily married. You could get close to her," Zelanka leaned closer to her daughter and lowered her voice.

"So, you want me to spy for you? Spy her?" Pelanka asked to clarify. She also lowered her voice.

Zelanka nodded. "Perhaps you can lure her out, make her try to recruit _you_."

Pelanka smiled. "Oh, you're so devious, mother."

"So, you're doing it?"

Pelanka nodded. "I would love to. It would give me something interesting to do." Her eyes sparkled with malicious glee.

"You're devious too, darling," Zelanka chuckled.

"Like mother, like daughter."
