Storm Warning

Description: There is a storm approaching.
Location: Seacraft Hall
Date: month 4, day 9 of Turn 8
Notes: Mentioned: Nerylyn; control post for the hurricane plot

The dolphins had already come in to let them know a storm was coming. Times
like these, Relik remembered how useful the creatures were. It would touch
landfall probably in another three days. They weren't sure exactly where it
would go yet but it was headed in their vicinity right then. He let Kaphrad
and everyone know the begin the preparation process. As a sailor, the
weather was a fact of life. They took it seriously and didn't play around
with those sorts of things. Deep down, he had a bad feeling but he tried to
ignore it. The last one wasn't that bad and they had weathered it with just
a few issues that were easily solved. Surely this one could be the same?

Still, caution was the word of the day. They collected extra freshwater,
food that didn't need to be kept cool, prepared and ate meals using food
that would spoil, and sent away the vessels that could float. Everything
else was secured, placed in the caves, or reinforced. One could never be too
careful. The news was spreading down the coastline and he knew most of the
holds along the water would be getting ready too. The thing about those
storms, one never knew if they were going to turn or fizzle out before they
came in. It was hard to say.

The threadfall shutters and doors would be used to save the windows.
Everyone would be brought into the Cargo Bay though some were leaving to
stay with family and friends elsewhere for a few days. He didn't blame them
and suspended regular operations for now, except for duties that were
absolutely necessary. During his lifetime, he had seen a lot of storms-good
and bad. What had happened to Topaz had been awful.

The ships being built had been secured as best they could. Kaphrad's
precious steamship was in the North, thankfully, and should miss the storm
on her return trip. Several firelizards popped in and out of his office,
carrying progress reports on the preparations. There were more people and
buildings to care for now then there had been even a few months ago, but
most of the population were sea and coast folk and knew what to expect.

With all the bustle, it was also a perfect time for the Hallsecond to send
messages to his very unofficial network. No one would notice a few extra
firelizards or the notes he slipped into a bottom drawer.

Uegot had pondered if he should call his sister to fetch Nerylyn and the
kids to River Bluff Weyr for the storm's duration. But the storm could hit
there too, so what's the point? Besides, they were from Jade Harbour Hold,
so this was not the first one they had endured. Uegot planned to spend the
storm in his bed, under furs with his wife. The only drawback he could think
of was that the children would probably crawl in there too.

The main buildings themselves were mostly stone. The other buildings were
vulnerable, though. Then again that was the life of a seacrafter, living on
the coast and dependent upon the weather. Relik sighed and looked down at
the list of people who had decided to go elsewhere for safety-mostly women
and children. He needed enough men to put the place back to rights and get
back to operating normally as soon as possible.
