It was just like she had remembered from the day she'd impressed
Lissath. The crowd that lined up to speak with her and congratulate
her was overwhelming. But now she had the added advantage of already
haven proven herself and Genna took the compliments and
congratulations with grace.
When she saw Kapera was next in line, Genna smiled a little lighter
still, remembering their earlier conversation on hatchings and what it
meant to have your dragon clutch. Now she could talk from experience!
Kapera had been nervous throughout. Panitath was close enough to
rising that Cyradis had sent her instead. Being Dolphin Cove's
official representative at a Weyr she'd once held rank at was an
awkward situation, and she felt like she was being stared at and
judged. It was a relief to arrive at the head of the line and talk to
Genna. She expected the conversation to be pleasant and entirely
non-political, and that would be great.
"Congratulations to you and Lissath," she said with a smile.
"Thank you Kapera, and my best to you and Riyanth, of course. It's so
nice you made it to see our first hatching. I remember we talked about
it a while back. And now it has suddenly become reality!"
"I wouldn't have missed it," Kapera said honestly. Even if she'd felt
some powerful trepidation, she liked Genna, and briefly wished the
girl was at Dolphin Cove. "Did you know any of the Candidates who
Impressed this time?"
"Yes, a few, I was a candidate myself not to long ago, after all,"
Genna replied, before continuing proudly. "The boy who impressed last,
to the bronze, he's a friend of mine and he's been a favourite of
Lissath's for a while now. Did Riyanth ever pick favourites amongst
the candidates?"
"She liked a boy from our last clutch, who also Impressed to a
bronze," Kapera said. "I know only the blues and greens Search, but I
wonder if the queens can tell who will ride their possible future
mates."
"Perhaps, I hadn't even thought about it like that!" Genna said,
considering it as an option for a moment. "If it is like that, it is
entirely subconscious, I think, I don't think she'd look at her own
hatchlings that way, after all."
"You'd be surprised what happens. The dragons don't mate the same way
we do," Kapera advised gently. "Maybe sensing who's good is just
another special gold trait."
"That is true. I guess it just seems that way to us. It just seems...
off to me. But dragons are a world apart from us in some aspects." She
shrugged, it would be a long time before Lissath's hatchlings were
even old enough to chase, much less have a chance at catching her.
"I've never liked it either, but fortunately none of Riyanth's have
ever caught her." Speaking of being caught... "So who was the sire to
you? A friend, or anything more?"
"Kenirath caught her, his rider is the Weyrlingmaster Second," Genna
said with a slightly sheepish grin. "It was slightly awkward at first,
but it was nice to have a teacher with me throughout this process."
"Well at least you already trusted him and he was experienced." There
were certainly worse options, it didn't sound like the younger woman
had hated it.
"Exactly," Genna smiled. "I was quite fortunate." Of course, it would
have been so much better if Rogueth had been the one to catch Lissath,
but on the other hand it was nice to know K'ran's attention for her
hadn't depened on the outcome of the flight. "Has a dragon who's rider
you really can't stand ever caught Riyanth?"
"I've had quite a few where I was indifferent to the man. But her
second flight, and her fourth, were both won by a man I loathed. It
happens that she chooses a dragon she likes, even if I can't stand the
man."
"That has to be really tough. How did you manage that? It's bound to
happen to me too, at some point in time." It seemed horrific to her,
but she knew by know there was a lot you could get used to, once you
learned it was just a part of the deal.
"There's only two times you _have_ to talk to him. After the flight,
when you're putting yourself back together and kicking him out. And at
the Hatching, when you sit nice together in the stands. You don't have
to invite him to the clutching or to socialize. It's kinda like trying
to ignore that one kid who always picked on you in Harper classes, if
that ever happened to you or someone you knew. Cold, frosty silence."
At least, that was how Kapera handled it.
"I'll give that a try if I ever get in that situation," Genna nodded.
"I was alone with Lissath during her clutching this time, too. It's
the way she wanted it. It made it all the more intimate, I must say."
"For your first, that sounds wonderful. It's a moving time for you
both. I'm glad you know the joys of it."
"I'm glad I do too, next time I won't be half as nervous," Genna smiled.
"Well, I hope you'll enjoy the party. I'm afraid I have tons of
political greetings to offer still. I hope I'll catch up with you later
tonight, Kapera. It's always a pleasure chatting with you."
"It's a pleasure speaking to you as well, Genna. Don't let the politics
ruin the party," Kapera said lightly. In the end, she was very glad
she'd gone.
