Kapera

Kapera

Kapera was shivering as she and Riyanth popped out of /between/. The
first visual that had come to mind for her was Windswept Islands Weyr.
She still had a few friends there, and she'd be able to get a quick
change of clothes. She cursed the fact that Panitath's rapid morning
rise hadn't given her time to get clothing more substantial than the
robe she was wearing over her sleeping shift. Nor was Riyanth properly
strapped, and the gold's neckridges were uncomfortable. She really
wanted to be landed as soon as possible.

It was the work of just a few minutes to find Sarris and borrow shoes,
tunic, and pants. There was no way that the flight was over yet. She
could have stayed and talked to people, but she found she was too
tired for that. So she made her farewells and went back /between/,
prepared this time.

They reappeared above a small retreat she'd visited before during gold
flights. It was a lake tucked into a caldera, with shade on one side
and sun warming the other. Since it was summer, the meadow was in full
bloom and she lay in the grass under Riyanth's outstretched wing on a
blanket she'd borrowed from her friend's weyr. No hidework or
responsibility right now. A rare moment out of time.

}:It is done,:{ Riyanth finally informed her, her mindvoice intruding
into the quiet doze the goldrider had slipped off into. }:Loseth wins
again.:{

**Is J'nus with a flight moth yet? Tell Kopth he could join us
here...** At the idea of J'nus touching another woman, even if it was
to slake the powerful lust of a goldflight, she found her lip curling
in displeasure. It was an unexpected sensation but a strong one. She
hoped he'd have the ability to make it there to her.

It took a while, but eventually dark bronze wings did appear in the
sky overhead. Kopth called a greeting to Riyanth, his disappointment
at losing Panitath's flight soothed by the fact that his favourite
queen had called for him. He landed neatly beside her, and J'nus
stepped down from his back. He'd ridden without a helmet and there was
a touch of frost in his hair from /between/. He also had a leather bag
slung over one shoulder as he approached Kapera. "Thank you for the
invitation."

She patted the blanket next to her in invitation and smiled up at him.
"I didn't want to head back just yet...it's not like Volcano will be
drilling for a bit. So why not invite you out here? It's one of my
favorite spots."

"I guess I should be saying I'm sorry you and Kopth didn't win," she
added after a moment.

A wave of relief went through him. Women could be touchy about flights,
even dragonriders. Separating feelings from the facts of life could be
difficult. But then, J'nus had no idea what Kapera felt for him.

He smiled and sat down beside her. "I'm not, but I will pass your
condolences on to Kopth." He reached into the bag and pulled out a
bottle of red wine, which he held out to Kapera. It had been meant as a
peace offering, but apparently would just be a treat. "I hope this
wasn't too presumptuous?"

"Not at all. A drink and a retreat sounds like a wonderful day. I
think Riyanth will console him as well. She was very jealous," Kapera
said, watching him to see his response.

J'nus smiled, a little shyly. "That will certainly help his bruised
ego." If Riyanth was jealous, perhaps her rider was as well. And that
wasn't a bad thing.

"Whereas your ego doesn't need any help?" She sidled a little closer.

J'nus raised his eyebrows at her. "Are you saying I have an ego?"

"You've certainly got an inflated head," she teased.

He snorted and bumped her with his shoulder. "Says the vain goldrider.
Isn't there some saying about pots and kettles?"

"I can't deny that. Besides, it's attractive to have a certain level of
confidence and pride."

"I think so." He leaned over and kissed her. If her words weren't an
invitation, then nothing was.

The goldrider didn't hesitate to seize the moment, deepening the kiss
immediately and reaching out to pull the bronzerider to her. She
hadn't known if he'd have been too worn out by the flight to care. A
small part of her, primally jealous, was treating it like reclaiming
her property. Did that come from the woman or from the gold? If he was
interested, then she'd be happy to receive that interest.

Residual desire from the goldflight rekindled, and J'nus forgot all about the valley, the wine and the view. The feel of Kapera's lips on his and body beneath his fingers became the only thing that mattered. He kissed her again and drew her down onto the blanket, feeling luckier just then than he would have if Kopth had won the flight.
