"Now where did I put that reed?" Since the thing was so small and
slippery, it was highly possible that it had slipped out of her
pocket. Grinding her teeth in frustration for a few moments, Nokala
began the slow process of leaning down and looking under the table.
Her eyes scanned the dark recesses under the furniture, hoping to see
the small piece of wood she needed for her flute.
Tavia came into the room and grinned at the sight. "What _are_ you
doing?"
"Shifty reeds....." came the harper's mumble before she brought her
head up, possibly giving up the search for a brief moment. The problem
was if it was on the floor she needed to find it before someone stepped
on it.
Tavia's brows twitched together. "Shifty wha...." a crunch sounded
from under her shoe. "Oh oh," she said as a hand flew to her mouth.
Hearing the sound, Nokala went still. She knew what that meant. Deep
inside, the journeywoman harper cried a little. Outwardly though, she was
the picture of serenity. Still, she was slow in getting up and when she faced
the greenrider she ran a hand through her hair. "I was trying to find a flute
reed, but I think you found it for me."
"I'm soooo sorry," Tavia said with a pinched face. "I did not mean to
do that," she added as she pulled her foot slowly back.
"It's okay. I can carve a new one. It'll just take some time." Rubbing her hands
on her legs, she tried to keep her calm face on. "I had a little bit
of time anyway
since my apprentice is a candidate and has more lessons."
"Can I get you more reeds or something to help?" She honestly felt so
bad about stepping on the thing she didn't quite know what to say.
"Well...I have to get some cane. Not the sweetcane but the stiff kind."
That could be something the drudges knew about. Nokala hadn't had time
to explore to find all the places it was available. She had half a mind to plant
a small crop of it herself outside the Weyr except she didn't have
time to tend crops.
"If you know where it grows best, I can take you there," Tavia offered.
**That's perfect! Why didn't I think of that?** Her eyes softened some as she
thought about her first dragonride since coming to Dragonsfall. "That would be
great. Nerat is actually the best place to find it."
"Then we go to Nerat and you can gather whatever you need." Tavia
nodded with a smile. "Would next restday be a good time?" It was only
a couple of days away.
"Sounds perfect!" The harper brushed off her trousers and nodded. "Where shall
I meet you?"
"Meet for breakfast first in the dining cavern and then take off? How
does that sound?" Tavia asked with a smile.
"It's a plan. See you then!" Nokala noticed the slant of the candle and realized
she had a lesson about to start. The harper headed off, long legs eating up the
distance. Her gait had a bit of a jaunt to it though.
